Welcome to WikiProject Swimming! This WikiProject is dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to competitive swimming and other aquatic sports.

Our goals
  • To provide guidelines and recommendations for articles that describe all aspects of swimming and water sports.
  • To improve Wikipedia's coverage of swimming and water sports by creating, expanding, and maintaining such articles.
  • To serve as the central point of discussion for issues related to swimming and water sports in Wikipedia.
Our scope
The project generally considers any article related to competitive swimming, long course swimming, short course swimming, open water swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming, and participants, coaches and governing organizations of those disciplines to be within the scope of WikiProject Swimming.
Our structure
Internally, the project has developed several structural features to help in managing its extensive work:
  • Departments, which coordinate work on certain specialized tasks, such as peer review or project-wide collaboration.

Departments[edit]

Assessment[edit]

The assessment department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's swimming and water sports articles. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the WP:1.0 program, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.

The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WP Swimming}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in a set of categories that serves as the basis for an automatically generated worklist.

Automation[edit]

The automation department uses various automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be extremely tedious to do manually; it collects requests for tasks, discusses whether they are suitable for automation, and attempts to match them with bot operators or users of semi-automated tools for implementation. All project members are invited to request tasks and to comment on the suitability of outstanding requests.

Peer review[edit]

The peer review department conducts peer reviews of swimming and water sports related articles on request; this helps to obtain ideas for further improvement by having contributors who may not have previously worked on particular articles examine them. Project members are invited to submit articles to the department in lieu of using the generic peer review process.

Newsletter[edit]

The newsletter department produces the newsletter on the project keeping all members up to date on the latest affairs.

Task forces and subpages[edit]

To-do[edit]

High priorities:

  1. Complete List of Commonwealth Games medallists in swimming (women), using List of Commonwealth Games medallists in swimming (men) as a template;
  2. Create List of Pan American Games medalists in swimming (men), using "List of Commonwealth Games medallists in swimming (men)" as a template (note: a combined list for men and women using a somewhat old-fashioned style already exists: List of Pan American Games medalists in swimming);
  3. Create List of Pan American Games medalists in swimming (women), using "List of Commonwealth Games medallists in swimming (men)" as a template;
  4. Fact-check 100% of the names, dates, distances, and locations for the swimming world record progression articles, starting with World record progression 100 metres freestyle, including inline footnotes to FINA records and newspaper accounts, if available.
  5. Add the current standardized Template:Infobox swimmer to all competitive swimmer biographies, using the current instructions and examples, starting with Olympic Games participants, and swimming medalists from the Commonwealth Games, European swimming championships, FINA world championships, Pan American Games, and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.
  6. Create "start"-quality biographical articles, with inline citations to support the text, for all swimming medalists from the Olympics (1896 to present).
  7. Create "start"-quality biographical articles, with inline citations to support the text, for all medalists from the FINA world championships, long course (1973 to present) and short course (1993 to present).
  8. Create "start"-quality biographical articles, with inline citations to support the text, for all swimming medalists from the Commonwealth Games (1930 to present), and Pan American Games (1951 to present).
  9. Create "start"-quality biographical articles, with inline citations to support the text, for all medalists from the European swimming championships (1926 to present), and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships (1985 to present).
  10. Improve all articles for Olympic gold medalists in swimming to "B"-quality biographical articles, with proper coverage of the subject and inline citations to support the text.

Here are some tasks awaiting attention:
  • Per WP:MOS, use   between numbers and units, e.g. 100 m, 2.2 s. in the case of "x" in a relay, use ×, i.e. 4×100 m.
