Overview

Sigma’s APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM is an advanced optical design of this 10x power high-performance zoom lens that covers the standard-to-super-telephoto range, now with the added advantage of Sigma’s own Optical Stabilization which offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Sigma is the only one to offer OS for Sony and Pentax mount where the image is stabilized in the viewfinder if chosen.

For many photographers, having an “all-in-one” lens is an absolute dream. Especially for nature photographers, the idea of a lens suitable for landscape photography at the short end of the zoom range, while still having enough reach for wildlife is a great option. Add to that, the ability to close focus on small objects in the field such as flowers and it’s the perfect backpackers’ lens. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide optimum color correction & sharpness throughout the entire zoom range and Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. With no need to change lenses, there is less chance of dirt or moisture entering the camera and fouling the imaging sensor.

The filter size of this lens is diameter 95mm and the lens is supplied with a step down ring enabling digital cameras with an APS-c size image sensor to use an diameter 86mm filter.
*It is not possible to use a Polarizing filter with the step down ring. If you attach a Polarizing filter, you may not be able to remove it from the lens again.

The Fan Photo of the Week for April 30th was captured by Loralea Kirby with a Sigma 50-500mm on a Canon EOS 7D at the Cape May Zoo. She tells us:This photo was captured at the Cape May Zoo here in New Jersey. I was wearing a skirt that this gorgeous male thought was quite attractive, and he was intent on letting me know that he was the most beautiful Peacock at the zoo. Every time I thought I had taken enough photos and went to leave, he would strut in front of me and display for yet another shot. Needless to say with the combination of the size of the Sigma lens I was shooting and his displays, we drew quite the crowd!I did very little post processing on this photo. The afternoon light filtered through the trees hitting the plumage at just the right angle to show off the shimmer without making it too harsh. The awesome focal range of the lens allowed me to stand back far enough to capture the shot without shadowing the subject or losing the catchlight in the eye, then zoom in further to capture the intricate details of the feathering.I have been shooting for about five years now, two of those years have been with a DSLR. I love the 50-500mm OS lens. This shot I was able to capture handheld due to the high magnification, but also thanks to the built-in OS that allowed me in a awkward standing position to capture a crisp and sharp photograph for the portfolio.

Early this year I had the pleasure of exploring, setting up and co-leading a workshop for 8 people to northern Greece to photograph the Dalmatian Pelican. With a wingspan greater than 10 foot these amazing birds would dwarf the brown pelicans found in most of the US (in fact the Dalmatian Pelican is the heaviest bird on the planet on average). Making images like this of one of these birds executing a hard ninety degree bank is even more than I expected. The Sigma APO 50-500mm OS HSM worked perfectly during the entire trip and allowed me to shoot all day without changing a lens or having to use a teleconverter once.

On a recent trip to Greece to photograph the Dalmatian Pelican I was able to field test the Sigma APO 50-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens. This was my first time using this lens and the ability to go from distant images of pelicans in flight to tight portraits like this with a twist of the wrist was nothing short of amazing! What looks like a bad hair day is actually just fine feathers drying into a cool looking hair like wave. The attractive red bill pouch is caused by hormonal changes during their breeding season.
