CES 2016 just wrapped up in Las Vegas and during the course of the week-long trade show, in between meetings and demos, we had the chance to roam the floor and check out a lot of cool new products; from big releases like the Nikon D500 and D5 to pleasant surprises like the new Kodak Super 8 camera (pictured above). I'd rather buy an iPhone or an Android phone than this. I don't know what kind of future this will have (if it will ever to production but I doubt it ever will) but it will not last long. In this digital age, cameras in smartphone (iPhone and Android) will just get better. Analog? hmmmmm! I also don't think that other's will make accessories or support this.

I remember when Kodak came out with the first digital back for SLR that was used in both Nikon (DCS 4xx) and Canon DCS 5xx) 20 some years ago and they were the turning point of high end digital cameras. Yes they very expensive at the time but it was the newest and latest and greatest technology in the digital camera world.

It's ironic that Kodak is including processing in the cost of the film. That was part of George Eastman's early business model (that and stealing technology from other companies). After you finished a roll, you would send in the whole camera and they'd send back your pictures and the camera loaded with fresh film.

I used to send my exposed slide film to Kodak, in their convenient mailers. BTW, they would cut/censor anything that they found to be a tiny bit racy.

The Kodak film / digital Frankencamera is definitely the Tuco of the C.E.S.

(In the classic spaghetti western to which the DRP headline is an apparent reference--The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly--the character referred to as the Ugly is Tuco, more fully Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez.)

student film school ( place here your ideal movie director ) = the small, but reliable market. It maybe a bust, but movie film has a look that is hard to fake with video. Them movie maker folk still love'm them film.

When I was a student in film school, we used 16mm not Super 8.

If Kodak was so eager to launch a product with obsolete technology, why not released a VHS camera? At least it would not need an SD card to record sound.

The Kodak Super8 camera is a Hipster tax.

$500-750 for the camera
$20 for a film pack
$50-70 to process said film
All for roughly 2 1/2 minutes
thats $.60 a SECOND
And of course you can't edit it unless you digitize it.
A year from now you will be able to buy those for $50 on craigslist

Not if it never goes into production. I just viewed Kodak's video for this camera and thought I was watching an Onion parody. Why didn't they shoot the sales video with this Super 8 camera if it is so good?

You don't edit film by digitizing. You edit it with a Moviola, a razor blade and a splicing block.

Smiler, yes pre 1992 that was true. This same workflow is the norm today with digital cinematography.

I'm so glad I clicked the link to the video of Ambarella's Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) demo. Fascinating. A vibrating platform. Oh, my. Be still, my heart.

Now that I've had a chance to calm down, is there any chance of posting a video from the camera that were sitting on the vibrating platform?

I think you pay nothing. I doubt Porsche has designed the box. What you pay is the right to use the Bosch name on your box.

Porsche Design is a real design studio, which probably doesn't let use their name in products that aren't designed by them, at least externally. I also assume that they have relatively high standards for technical quality of the products they take part to create. Association of their name with quality is their most valuable asset. Mostly I'm not really such a big fan of their style, though. The Porsche cars are another thing; I like them very much :-)

Read the amazon reviews for that porsche hard drive. They're junk. And seeing as their new models start at 4TB, they're likely normal magnetic drives which can reach nowhere near the quoted 5GB/s speed of the bus. Shame on dpreview for overlooking this.

This glut of "360 degree" cameras - their speil all seems to imply a full sphere of vision, but you keep on with the "360 degree" moniker. Which is it please, and why the confusion of terms?

The circumference, or 'equator' if you will, of a half sphere is 360 degrees, and that's why these cameras, somewhat disingenuously, are marketed as 360 degree cameras. But you don't get a 360 degree field of view, of course, unless there's two lenses and sensors on the camera.

Au contraire. If you get the full horizon then you've got 360 degrees. Be that a thin strip around the horizon or a full sphere, the 360 degree measurement does not distinguish since it is only a one dimensional measurement.

My point is that these cameras do much more than 360 degrees, and to describe what they do requires a two dimensional measurement.

I'm not suggesting they talk about steradians or solid angle, since few will understand, but equally using simple degrees is meaningless. So we are stuck between the incomprehensible and the meaningless.

Unless perhaps they describe them in terms of percentage of a full sphere. I think most would understand that.

Wow lomo for movies. I'll (not even) give you a dollar for it.

Film is cool; but I could make a digital move look like this 8mm. The tools are free open software. Probably faster than I could wait on development.

If I'm missing something about this then tell me.

That's not to say HQ Hollywood film is dead. ... and I know they could use this for "history" footage and keep the claim to 100% flim movies (at first).

Nor is it a slight against using good ole(new) 35mm FF film for stills; in moderation.

Funny how we always hear about how people can make digital look like film. Every time I see the results I just roll my eyes. Yep...but you can make a blob of tofu taste exactly like a steak as well.

A. It is very good if Nikon is filling customer demand (D500). I'm not so sure they really are though.

B. This is what they do: Really nice claimed ability to AF fine tune any lens (by smart means) and a few other NEW pros for first adopters. Coupled with some bump in abilities and then everyone is supposed to go gaga over a bad total system.

1. Price.

2. Behemoth.

3. Better OVERALL systems are found in smaller and far better values.

4. I thought we were fixing mirror-less??? You know EVF's, hybrid tracking. better video. No just 4K; but better. For APS-C and FF. If not MF mirror-less.

Think (slight bigger) N1 with an APS-C instead to start. With included (flange-back space) adapter; that would cover all your legacy DSLR lenses. A full function adapter too AF/AE/VR SILENT. This is a requirement for Canikon to move their APS and FF to mirror-less.

Behemoth? That's relative, and besides, the D500 is mainly targeted at sports/wildlife shooters, who are going to use it with large telephoto lenses. This is why many of them prefer a crop sensor body instead of FF; the crop factor saves them from the extra effort and cost of having to use even larger lenses in addition to a FF body!

And how is any mirrorless system a better overall system than Canon's and Nikon's DSLR systems? Don't you include lenses and flash systems in the overall system?

That Exolens for the iPhone is baffling. I don't know if there's a market for these. I'd understand if they sold expensive lens hoods which is a boon for the flare prone smartphones cameras.

I'm personally not interested in anything here but one thing.

Maybe the Nikon, Olympus and other users have things they like.

I'd like to see the Quantum Film idea implemented in an APS-C or FF sensor.

I'd say starting small is the wisest business move.
Small sensors sell more than big ones, are cheaper for them to make and the smartphone area is where dynamic range is lacking the most right now.
I can't wait to use their technology in any capacity :)

That SB5000 flashlight is quite puzzling unlike Pocketwizard/Phottix or even Canon's own ST-E3-RT the radio trigger is more cumbersome to use. Why didnt Nikon make a radio trigger similar to their older SU800?

The reason is simple they decided to put all their R&D in the new 18-55 lenses after they finished making the D5 and D500

Have to agree with Brownie. This was a pretty lacklustre show and while Nikon had a couple of interesting products, there was a real shortage of anything else worth bothering with.

or CP+ in japan which is coming up end of Feb.

Nikon probably wanted to get theirs done before canon's announcements.

lets face it.. CES is a consumer electronics show .. not exactly the hot bed of camera company technology.

leading up to CP+..sony, canon, olympus, fuji and others will most likely all announce new cameras by the sounds of it.

CES draws more people then a photography show. And it is in a big consumer market so Nikon was showing off their best tech here. Sony and Samsung are electronic giant and have other tech to show, so camera was on the lower priority. Camera division isn't sony money maker, PlayStation and other electronics are.

I think Nikon announced their DSLRs at CES, because they know that Canon doesn't announce DSLRs there. That's savvy marketing, and my comment isn't meant to detract from the quality of Nikon's offerings.

Not necessarily. If I were going to introduce a hot new camera, I'd think twice about doing it at CES, where hundreds of other cool electronic gizmos are stealing thunder..

I wouldn't read too much doom and gloom into CES in particular. There were 170,000 people there and most of them weren't photographers, so it's hard for any company to really stand out. The fact that Nikon created so much buzz is impressive.

@chrshale - Throw your digital cameras in the bin and delete all the photos you've taken with them. The industry is dying.
There's a reason why analog cameras and darkroom gear are going up in price. Demand for them is increasing while pretty soon expensive digital camera users will be replaced with drones and smartphones users.
The future of photography is going to come from the past.

Still photography's death has been predicted since at least the introduction of motion pictures. It will happen, but not in our lifetimes. In the meantime it will evolve...I'm kind of fascinated by virtual reality, myself.

I'm really intrigued by the Panono, but I'm a little leery of the cloud-based aspect, as in, am I buying a camera or a service?

The camera's not cheap ($1500), and I'd like to think that if the startup fails, I'd still be able to use the device via a desktop app.
