Axanar Offers Fan-Film Guidelines Of Its Own

27 May 2016 12:14 PM, PDT

Settlement talks apparently continue between the studios that own Star Trek CBS Corp. and Paramount Pictures and a fan-film they said went to far, "Star Trek: Axanar." With the announcement of those talks a week ago, the studios also surprised everyone by saying it was creating guidelines for fan-films.Not to be left out, "Axanar" which appears to be the very reason why CBS and Paramount are looking to create fan-film guidelines to begin with have come up with some suggestions of their own. And Axanar Productions' principal, Alec Peters, has apparently brought a few other fan-film producers on board.AxaMonitor, a site dedicated solely to the copyright infringement lawsuit CBS and Paramount filed against Axanar Productions and Peters last December, says it has obtained a copy of the proposed »

Will CBS Continue Axanar Lawsuit On Its Own?

26 May 2016 2:25 AM, PDT

CBS Corp. and Paramount Pictures first went their separate ways at the end of 2005 and they might be doing it again.Although "Star Trek: Beyond" producer J.J. Abrams insists the copyright infringement lawsuit the studios filed against an "independent" fan-film was "going away," it seems Abrams was really only able to speak on behalf of one of the plaintiffs. The other, CBS, is far from ready to settle. And a countersuit filed by Axanar Productions and its principal Alec Peters might have been enough to convince CBS to continue the lawsuit whether Paramount is on board or not.One source connected to CBS who asked not to be named said the countersuit "acts in bad faith during settlement talks.""It's an inflammatory thing that will cause CBS to withdraw from settlement discussions and continue »

Quinto Ensures Nimoy's Spirit Thrives In 'Beyond'

25 May 2016 1:24 AM, PDT

Zachary Quinto knew the moment he signed up to play Spock in the rebooted Star Trek film franchise, he'd have big shoes to fill. But it didn't become fully apparent to him until he met the man who made Spock, well, Spock for nearly 50 years: Leonard Nimoy.More than a year after his passing, Quinto says he still misses the actor who quickly became a friend. And even started adopting some of Nimoy's on-set practices like never conducting interviews while in the Spock character."I would say my connection to the character is deeper now because of our relationship," Quinto told io9 reporter Germain Lussier. "I feel a real responsibility to honor him and to do the character a real kind of justice. So I think my connection to that is a lot stronger now, though he's not with us anymore."How and if »

Trek's Prime Universe 'Closed For Business'?

25 May 2016 12:58 AM, PDT

There might have been a little bit of truth to some of the gossip last month about the new Star Trek series planned for CBS All Access.A source tells 1701News that the series, set to debut in January on the subscription streaming service, could be a prequel of sorts, taking place after Capt. Kirk and his voyages of the USS Enterprise. With one catch it won't be in the prime universe of Star Trek pre-2009, but instead set in the new universe brought to us by J.J. Abrams."There is apparently a contingent within CBS that views the prime universe closed for business," said the source, who asked not to be named. "And there is something to that. The last hour of prime universe Star Trek was filmed 12 years ago. Meanwhile, there have been three films set in the new universe. The faction says it would »

Axanar Countersues Paramount, CBS In Copyright Case

24 May 2016 1:37 PM, PDT

If Paramount and CBS are indeed in the process of settling its copyright infringement lawsuit against an "independent" fan-film, it will now have to settle two. That's because the attorney representing Axanar Productions and its principal, Alec Peters, have filed a countersuit against Paramount Pictures and CBS Corp., claiming that not only has the fan-film not violated any of the Star Trek copyrights, but that the studios should be barred from suing Axanar over it again in the future."Plaintiffs have not and will not suffer any market harm as a result of the creation and distribution of defendants' work," Axanar attorney Erin Ranahan wrote in her counterclaim, filed with the federal court on Monday. "Instead, these works offer free promotional value to plaintiffs. These works are not intended »

Be Careful What You Wish For ...

23 May 2016 1:13 AM, PDT

When I stepped out of my semi-retirement from news reporting at the beginning of the year, believe it or not, it had nothing to do with the fan-film "Star Trek: Axanar."If anyone looked at how many fan-film stories on this site, or even our sister site Airlock Alpha, you likely would never see my name. That's because outside of making some friends through the fan-film community, I myself was never much of a consumer of fan-films, or even really fan-fiction.Not that I didn't support them, but I also don't read comic books, or watch the Real Housewives reality shows. I mean, we all have our different interests, and although I know many people in fan-fiction and fan-films, I never would really consider myself a huge fan. However, on Jan. 2 when I was still convinced this case would be settled »

Fan-Film Producers Finally Speak Out On Axanar Lawsuit

23 May 2016 1:07 AM, PDT

Shocking observers, fans and according to at least four different sources, the studios themselves "Star Trek: Beyond" producer J.J. Abrams publicly inserted himself into a copyright infringement lawsuit Friday night declaring his support for the fan-film being sued. However, in an effort to defend fan-films, Abrams might have actually riled up many of those very fan-film communities not attached to "Star Trek: Axanar.""There was a fan movie, 'Axanar,' that was getting made," Abrams said while sharing a stage with "Beyond" director Justin Lin and "Mythbusters" host Adam Savage, adding that Lin "as a lifetime fan" of Star Trek was "outraged" by the lawsuit."And we started talking about it that this was not an appropriate way to deal with fans. The fans should be celebrating this thing. We all, »
