Movie Review – Midnight Special (2016)

Midnight Special, 2016.

Written and Directed by Jeff Nichols.

Starring Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Lieberher, Sean Bridgers, Bill Camp, Paul Sparks, and Sam Shepard.

Synopsis:

A father and son go on the run after the dad learns his child possesses special powers.

On the surface, Midnight Special appears to indulge in science-fiction tropes (narratively speaking, mimicking classics such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T), offering nothing new to the genre. Realistically, that is a limited, funneled viewpoint holding back the true 1980s Steven Spielberg reminiscent greatness and appreciation to be found.

Essentially, this is the thinking person’s kind of movie, depicting a seemingly humanoid yet otherworldly being unintentionally upsetting order and balance throughout the day-to-day life of Earth’s inhabitants. However, it’s also relentlessly intense and never ceases pushing forward, whether it be with a display of action or knowledge »

Countdown to Batman v Superman: Should Superman Kill?

Anghus Houvouras on the debate over whether Superman should kill…

Ever since Superman snapped General Zod’s neck at the end of Man of Steel, fans have been debating whether or not that choice was ‘right for the character’. It’s a polarizing discussion that has divided a number of comic fans, and with Batman v Superman right around the corner the conversation continues to come up. Just the other night Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott weighed in.

Die hard fans cling to the idea that Superman doesn’t kill. It’s something relegated to fringe stories and alternate realities. In the world of comic books, Superman is a hero with a strong moral compass. He doesn’t kill. Most of the time anyway. He sure did some killing in John Byrne’s run where he executed three Kryptonian villains who had completely destroyed an alternate Earth. It was a »

Why Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters shows the best of Hollywood remakes

Simon Columb weighs in on Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot…

Fellow Flickering Myth-er and Ghostbusters fan, Luke Owen, followed the release of the new trailer [watch it here] with an article titled “Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters is everything wrong with reboots…”. His interest in the topic is deep and the first few paragraphs of his informative article is a concise history on the development of the third instalment of Ghostbusters. What is exceptionally clear is his distaste for Paul Feig. Director of Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy, Feig has an impressive career in comedy proving how he is clearly ‘creative enough’ to reboot the series. Cinematically, these three films earned over $200m each, pulling in $775m worldwide. Though Luke may not be a fan, it is clear that many millions of others are. Including me.

Let us get the obvious out-of-the-way. If you don’t like Paul Feig, it is more than likely »

Possible Spoiler: More ‘confirmation’ of Jena Malone’s unknown role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Warning: possible spoiler below…

It was revealed last week that Jena Malone had been cut from the theatrical version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and would instead appear in the R-rated director’s cut which will be released on Blu-ray. There had been ‘confirmation’ on the role she was set to play – which had previously been rumoured to be Carrie Kelley from The Dark Knight Returns – and now a Redditer has further confirmed the previous rumour.

Check out the image below:

The Redditer claims it came from an entertainment survey they filled out for Warner Bros. that asked which characters they would like to see if future trailers for the film. With the film out in a couple of weeks, it would seem that this is an old form. But if that’s the case, why did they hold on to it for so long? Take this with »

Comic Book Review – Star Trek #55

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek #55…

This all-new story set in the universe of the new Star Trek films celebrates the life of the most iconic character of them all: Leonard Nimoy’s Spock. In Part 1 of this 4-part epic, the elder Spock joins the last survivors of Vulcan to search the galaxy for a new homeworld!

It has been just over a year since the great Leonard Nimoy left our mortal coil and travelled off into the undiscovered country, abd it seems right that something rather special should be done to celebrate one of his most iconic roles.  With this Mike Johnson puts the pen to paper and begins a four-part special titled the Legacy of Spock.

We return back to 2258 and we meet up with Spock and Spock Prime as the elder advises the younger to stay within Starfleet, whilst he journeys to help establish the New Vulcan.  It’s »

Check out the rejected Batman ’89 comic featuring Posion Ivy, Batgirl, Harley Quinn and Billy Dee Williams’ Two-Face

DC Comics are on a bit of a nostalgia trip at the moment with the brilliantly-reviewed and received Batman ’66 (which continues the adventures of Adam West and Burt Ward as the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder) and Wonder Woman ’77, featuring further outings of Lynda Carter’s as the Amazonian Princess. But it would seem they’re not looking to expand this line as artist Joe Quinones has unveiled a rejected pitch that he and Kate Leith put forward for Batman ’89, which would have continued the Burton-Batverse after Batman Returns.

“Inspired by DC’s recent Batman ‘66 series, our story would have picked up the threads left by Tim Burton’s Batman Returns,” Quinones notes on his blog. “We would have seen the return of Selina Kyle/ Catwoman as well as introductions to ‘Burton-verse’ versions of Robin, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. It also would have showcased the turn »

Zack Synder says Christian Bale could have been part of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Back in November last year, there was a fan theory that gained traction which suggested Christian Bale was secretly playing Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and that Ben Affleck was actually Slade Wilson. How anyone came up with this theory given the trailers is up for another topic of conversation. Bale shot the theory down, but Zack Snyder has revelaed that there was talk of offering the former Dark Knight a role in the new movie.

“This is a total and opposite reality from the Chris Nolan movies,” he told Film Ink. “It’s another universe, so we couldn’t hire Christian Bale if we wanted to, because he doesn’t exist in our world. Maybe we could hire him to play another part. We did talk about that briefly. I just wanted to hire Christian to play another part to make that obvious. Christian could play, »

Mad Men star Kevin Rahm has signed on for a series regular role in Fox’s Lethal Weapon pilot, where he will play the role of Captain Avery, “who pairs up Murtaugh with Riggs, hoping the younger cop can put a little vigor back in Murtaugh’s career, and enjoys the corner office that came with his recent promotion to Captain.”

While the Mel Gibson role of Martin Riggs remains uncast, Damon Wayans (My Wife and Kids) will follow in Danny Glover’s footsteps as Roger Murtaugh and Fast & Furious star Jordana Brewster will play Lapd hostage negotiator and therapist Dr. Maureen ‘Mo’ Cahill.

The plan was always for John Cena to fight the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 32. But then, in January, Cena found himself out of action because of shoulder surgery.

Nobody really panicked though, because it’s Super Cena – the man who can not just return ridiculously early from injuries, but also from storyline suspensions. Wade Barrett firing Cena was once actually a thing. For a week, at least.

But as time went on, the seriousness of Cena’s injury become apparent. He wouldn’t make Mania. »
