‘Don’t Think Twice’ Director Blasts MPAA Over ‘Suicide Squad’s’ PG-13 Rating

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Filmmaker and comedian Mike Birbiglia doesn’t understand why the MPAA gave his new movie “Don’t Think Twice” an R-rating while allowing the violence-laden “Suicide Squad” a PG-13.

Suicide Squad has machine gun killings and bombings and got a PG-13 rating. @Dontthinkmovie gets an R because adults smoke pot. Confusing?” Birbiglia said on Wednesday.

He later wrote “F— the MPAA” but deleted the tweet.

A spokesman for the MPAA told Variety the org declined to comment on the matter.

Filmmaker Judd Apatow, who directed and produced “Trainwreck,” “Knocked Up,” “Funny People,” “This Is 40” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin, responded sympathetically to Birbiglia on Twitter:

“Studios own the ratings board. Violence sells so they make pot and sex the scary thing so they seem caring.”

Birbiglia responded: “That makes a lot of sense and is insane.”

Film Arcade released “Don’t Think Twice,” which currently has a 100% fresh rating on »

Interview with Mike Birbiglia, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci and Keegan-Michael Key for Don't Think Twice

22 hours ago | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Friendships are tested with a New York City improv troupe after one gets a huge break for television in Don’T Think Twice.

In this refreshing comedy from actor/director Mike Birbiglia, it follows a group of friends who acted together for an improv show for many years. Until one day, one of the members successfully received a part in a popular television and the group started to fall apart.

The film also stars Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Keegan-Michael Key.

Lrm sat down with Birbiglia, Jacobs, Micucci and Key at a press event late last month to talk about acting, improv and the relatable story with this movie.

Don’T Think Twice is currently showing in limited release in select cities.

‘Don’t Think Twice’ Star Gillian Jacobs Predicted Donald Trump’s Candidacy (Video)

31 July 2016 11:06 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

There’s a moment at the beginning of Mike Birbiglia‘s “Don’t Think Twice” that sees the cast, an improv group, trading Donald Trump impressions at a bar. It’s a scene that seems especially relevant in 2016, but it was written and shot before Trump’s presidential bid. At the time, Birbiglia had no idea it would become as relevant as it is in 2016. His co-star Gillian Jacobs was the only one who even considered it. “She goes, ‘He might be a real candidate, like not a joke,'” Birbiglia told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell. “And I was like, »

Film Review: Comedy is Humanity in Magnanimous ‘Don’t Think Twice’

30 July 2016 6:07 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Comedian/writer/director Mike Birbiglia is breaking out as a filmmaker, and he adds a deft and emotional touch to a story of an improvisation comedy troupe split apart by change they didn’t expect. That sounds a lot like life, and it’s best to “Don’t Think Twice.”

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Part backstage show business story, part understanding of creative (and other types of) partnering, “Don’t Think Twice” blends the elements through the centerpiece of the improvisation stage – a particular kind of comedy presentation that relies on those stage partners and an individual’s ability to make a quick decision. Sometimes – like in life – those partners have your back, or can just as quickly and suddenly leave you behind. This is Mike Birbiglia’s second film, and it shows a progress and maturity as a director that is reaching true heights of comedy and the challenges of being human. »

Even the most tightly-knit improv groups can unravel when a nationally-broadcast sketch show beckons. They all play members of The Commune, a well-liked improv group that’s nonetheless becoming too small a pond for its members.

For your chance to win a pair of passes to the premiere screening, simply enter your information here. Interview: Philosopher King Mike Birbiglia of ‘Don’t Think Twice’

27 July 2016 8:42 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When comedian/writer/director Mike Birbiglia is in his element, as during the interviews he conducted at The iO Theater in Chicago, he is relaxed and ardently philosophical. He has written and directed a new film, “Don’t Think Twice,” which is about a improvisation comedy troupe, but it’s also about life.

“Don’t Think Twice” – besides being a clever play on the famous Bob Dylan song title – is essentially about the stages of life, and how we react to our own ambitions. The members of the comedy troupe – portrayed by (clockwise in the picture below, starting top left) Mike Birbiglia, Kate Miccuci, Chris Gethard, Gillian Jacobs, Keegan-Michael Key and Tami Sagner – are at a crossroads in their professional and personal lives, and have to deal with the sudden uptick of fame to one of their members. As Birbiglia did with his first feature, ‘Sleepwalk with Me,’ he »

Mike Birbiglia on ‘Don’t Think Twice,’ Envy, And Why Improv is Nicer Than Stand-Up

25 July 2016 12:49 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Mike Birbiglia is pulling back the curtain on the feuds and resentments that consume comedians when one of their own hits it big.

In his second feature, “Don’t Think Twice,” Birbiglia depicts a tight-knit improv troop that starts to unravel when one of its members gets cast on a popular comedy program that seems a lot like “Saturday Night Live.”It’s an opportunity for the stand-up comic to explore the nature of success, the fear of failure, and the way that people in their thirties began to grapple with the realization that they may not make it after all.

Birbiglia not only directs, he wrote the film, produced it, and stars alongside Keegan-Michael Key and Gillian Jacobs. Best known for his stand-up comedy and one-man shows, he previously directed 2012’s “Sleepwalk With Me,” an autobiographical look at his sleepwalking disorder. “Don’t Think Twice” opened in a single »

Arthouse Audit: ‘Don’t Think Twice’ Is More Than Alright

24 July 2016 10:26 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice” (The Film Arcade) is the latest mid-summer hit, joining the recent turnaround in art house fortunes. Following his template for “Sleepwalk With Me,” Birbiglia & Co. boosted box office via frequent appearances at their New York cinema. The already strong film surged to a huge initial $90,000 number with many sold out shows on multiple screens.

Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” (Lionsgate) continued to improve on the director’s recent performance, and could end up besting two other recent strong openers. “Captain Fantastic” (Bleecker Street) and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (The Orchard) continue to have strong expansions; both could end up over $10 million as well.

Asian wide-audience commercial releases are performing well in domestic play, with entries from South Korea, India, the Philippines along with China continuing to deliver strong niche results.

'Star Trek Beyond' Debuts at #1, 'Lights Out' Opens Strong and 'Ice Age 5' Bombs

24 July 2016 9:28 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Topped by Star Trek Beyond, five films grossed over $20 million this weekend for the first time since May 24, 2015 and for only the sixth time ever*. In the five previous instances $45.6 million was the largest gross for the #1 film when Monsters University topped the weekend back on June 30, 2013, which separates this weekend from the rest thanks to the estimated $59.6 million Beyond delivered in its debut performance. Also opening this weekend, and topping the $20 million threshold, was the impressive performance from New Line and Warner's Lights Out along with the rather disappointing opening for Ice Age: Collision Course. Overall, the top twelve grossed over $183 million, up 29.4% when compared to the same weekend last year. The estimated $59.6 million opening for Star Trek Beyond is enough to take #1 for the weekend, but that's a 15% drop compared to the $70.1 million opening for Star Trek Into Darkness, and that's not including the $13.5 million it carried into »

Mike Birbiglia and Ira Glass Reveal Why Making ‘Don’t Think Twice’ is Even Harder Than Improv (Video)

Ira Glass thinks it’s crazy for anyone to make a film. Ever.

But when his “This American Life” contributor Mike Birbiglia wanted to follow their 2012 collaboration “Sleepwalk with Me” with a film about an improv comedy troupe, Glass went along for another ride.

“It’s very hard for anybody who tries to make things for a living,” Glass said in our video interview at SXSW the morning after the film’s rousing premiere. “It’s hard to make anything that’s good… It struck me even more this time how many things have to go right, in every scene, every sound cue, it’s almost like every minute of the film is another 15 things that you can screw up.”

But Birbiglia, who learned a lot writing, directing, starring, and releasing “Sleepwalk with Me,” was up for the challenge. “It’s like nine art forms — you’ve got photography, acting, »

‘Don’t Think Twice’ Stars Gillian Jacobs and Kate Micucci On How to Maneuver The Wilds of Hollywood

22 July 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Give most any performer half a chance, and they’ll tell you how hard it is to be in show business. There’s the constant rejection, soul-crushing survival jobs and the unique hell of internet trolls. But Gillian Jacobs and Kate Micucci aren’t any performers. As they chiseled eccentric paths through the contemporary comedy landscape, both actresses have managed to keep their spirits high. And with the new showbiz dramedy “Don’t Think Twice,” the delightful duo finally had a chance to share the screen, much to our collective good fortune.

Written and directed by Mike Birbiglia, “Don’t Think Twice” centers on the improv The Commune. After years working together in a supportive and silly environment, the group and their dynamic are threatened as their comedy club is closing down, and one of their number gets a big break on a certain Saturday night sketch comedy show. Too »

'Don't Think Twice' Review: Failure Is an Option

21 July 2016 12:53 PM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Don't Think Twice looks at life inside an improv comedy group, which means it speaks to anyone on the periphery of success who dreams of taking the next step. It also speaks to the agony of watching one of your peers take that step and leave you behind. I can't get Mike Birbiglia's movie out of my head.

Birbiglia, 38, knows the drill: He's been doing improv and stand-up since forever. In 2012, he turned his semi-autobiographical one-man show, Sleepwalk With Me, into his feature film debut as writer, director and actor. »

'Don't Think Twice': Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Birbiglia and More on Showbiz Fails

Let's say you're a six-person improv group — we'll call you "The Commune" — and you've been kicking around the New York City comedy scene for a while. You're drawing a decent crowd, playing the good nights in a Ucb-level venue downtown, and because you've been doing this together for so long, you're hitting maximum performer mind-meld onstage. Then one of your members gets recruited for an SNL-like show called Weekend Live. The rest of you are still left living gig to gig. What's a troupe to do?

Mike Birbiglia Says ‘Don’t Think Twice’ is ‘More Like Life’ Than a Movie

21 July 2016 9:56 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“I’ll be the sixth lead in the indie film and that’s ok,” joked comedian Chris Gethard Wednesday night at the Sunshine Landmark Cinema for the New York premiere of “Don’t Think Twice.”

“It’s easier for [photographers] to take pictures of me until Keegan[-Michael Key] gets here,” Gethard laughed – playing off the theme of the film, which follows a New York City improv troupe. When one member gets his big break, they begin to realize they can’t all make it in the business.

While the movie surrounds comedians played by Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher, and Mike Birbiglia, producer Miranda Bailey said the film is a “drama about comedy.”

“It’s more about friendship and life and it’s about an experience. What does success do to friendships and jealousy? It explores those kinds of things in a really funny way.”

‘Don’t Think Twice’ Star Keegan-Michael Key On How To Tackle Comedy In This Divisive Political Climate – Q&A

20 July 2016 11:20 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

For nearly two decades, Keegan-Michael Key has been tirelessly chiseling out a successful path in comedy. Name a standout sitcom from “Reno 911” to “How I Met Your Mother,” “Parks and Recreation” to “It’s Always Philadelphia,” “Modern Family,” “The Muppets” or “Ricky and Morty,” and Key has popped by to add his hilarious flare. The path began back in 2004 when he was cast on “MADtv,” and eventually led to he and castmate Jordan Peele spawning their own sketch show, the critically heralded and sharply satirical “Key and Peele.”

Through all of the above, Key has shown himself to be one of the boldest and most entertaining comedy performers working today. But in his new film, “Don’t Think Twice,” the funny man smoothly slides into drama. Which turns out to be an important next step for the challenge Key’s looking to take on next.

A ‘Community’ movie could be on the cards, says creator Dan Harmon

13 July 2016 12:50 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Dan Harmon, creator of the hit TV sitcom Community, which has just completed six season, has been speaking to the Us website Collider about plans for a film version. The show, which features heavy use of meta-humor and pop culture references, developed a cult following after its initial run in 2009, and forever stood by the mantra “six seasons and a movie”, a line from the second season episode “Paradigms of Human Memory”.

So, six seasons are done. What about that movie?

If I pull out a typewriter right now and write a Community movie just from my own mind, then I have to go through the heartbreak and agony of finding out which of the people are going to show up to make it,” Harmon said. “Whereas, on the other hand, if I wait for everybody to line up and say, ‘We’re all out of work and ready to do a Community movie! »
