"We're brothers now." A new comedy from the people behind Saturday Night Live. Brother Nature is an indie comedy produced by SNL's Lorne Michaels, featuring at least four SNL cast members. The story involves a straight-laced politician named Roger, played by Taran Killam, who goes on a retreat to a cabin with his dream girl, played by Gillian Jacobs. But in the woods they meet his soon-to-be-brother-in-law, played by Bobby Moynihan, and his family, and things get wild as expected. Also featuring Rita Wilson, Bill Pullman, Ellen Bloodworth, Sarah Burns, Giancarlo Esposito, Rachael Harris, Kumail Nanjiani, Kenan Thompson and David Wain. This is chock full of really dumb humor that makes me wonder if it's going to feel like a very drawn out SNL skit that just doesn't work on the big screen. Have fun. If you’re a fan of Saturday Night Live (and some other NBC shows), look no further than this new Lorne Michaels-produced comedy. Directing duo Matt Villines and Osmany Rodriguez‘s feature debut, Brother Nature, follows a by-the-books politician named Roger (Taran Killam) and his dream girl (Gillian Jacobs) as decide they deserve a break. With plans to propose, they take a retreat at a cabin to meet his soon-to-be-brother-in-law (Bobby Moynihan) and family, who makes the trip less of a time to relax and more of a disaster. As his plans go awry, Roger tries to assimilate into a family that proves much more trying than he thought.

Maya Rudolph is reteaming with her Bridesmaids co-star Melissa McCarthy for New Line’s college-set comedy, Life of the Party. McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone, is directing the movie, which has a script by the duo. The pair are producing the project with Chris Henchy (Daddy's Home). The plot is described as being in vein of the Rodney Dangerfield hit college comedy Back to School, about a crass partier who joins his son at university. Animal Kingdom star Molly Gordon is playing McCarthy’s daughter while Gillian Jacobs is cast as a sorority sister. Rudolph will play McCarthy’s neurotic best friend.

Meeting your significant other’s family can be tough, especially when they have a quirky brother who keeps landing you in a series of unfortunate events. Paramount Pictures and Samuel Goldwyn Films released the first trailer for the new comedy, “Brother Nature,” which deals with a similar situation.
Taran Killam stars as Roger, a straight-laced politician who has big plans to propose to his dream girl (Gillian Jacobs) at her family’s lake house. But everything goes awry when he meets his potential brother-in-law Todd (Bobby Moynihan): a full-time camp counselor with a heart of gold and a wild sense of fun, pining to be Roger’s best friend, and ultimately catapulting him into a series of ridiculous misfortunes. Roger soon realized that being part of this new family may be harder than he thought.

Filmmaker and comedian Mike Birbiglia doesn’t understand why the MPAA gave his new movie “Don’t Think Twice” an R-rating while allowing the violence-laden “Suicide Squad” a PG-13.
“Suicide Squad has machine gun killings and bombings and got a PG-13 rating. @Dontthinkmovie gets an R because adults smoke pot. Confusing?” Birbiglia said on Wednesday.
He later wrote “F— the MPAA” but deleted the tweet.
A spokesman for the MPAA told Variety the org declined to comment on the matter.
Filmmaker Judd Apatow, who directed and produced “Trainwreck,” “Knocked Up,” “Funny People,” “This Is 40” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin, responded sympathetically to Birbiglia on Twitter:
“Studios own the ratings board. Violence sells so they make pot and sex the scary thing so they seem caring.”
Birbiglia responded: “That makes a lot of sense and is insane.”

Friendships are tested with a New York City improv troupe after one gets a huge break for television in Don’T Think Twice.
In this refreshing comedy from actor/director Mike Birbiglia, it follows a group of friends who acted together for an improv show for many years. Until one day, one of the members successfully received a part in a popular television and the group started to fall apart.
The film also stars Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Keegan-Michael Key.
Lrm sat down with Birbiglia, Jacobs, Micucci and Key at a press event late last month to talk about acting, improv and the relatable story with this movie.
Don’T Think Twice is currently showing in limited release in select cities.

Mike Birbiglia is pulling back the curtain on the feuds and resentments that consume comedians when one of their own hits it big.
In his second feature, “Don’t Think Twice,” Birbiglia depicts a tight-knit improv troop that starts to unravel when one of its members gets cast on a popular comedy program that seems a lot like “Saturday Night Live.”It’s an opportunity for the stand-up comic to explore the nature of success, the fear of failure, and the way that people in their thirties began to grapple with the realization that they may not make it after all.

Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice” (The Film Arcade) is the latest mid-summer hit, joining the recent turnaround in art house fortunes. Following his template for “Sleepwalk With Me,” Birbiglia & Co. boosted box office via frequent appearances at their New York cinema. The already strong film surged to a huge initial $90,000 number with many sold out shows on multiple screens.
Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” (Lionsgate) continued to improve on the director’s recent performance, and could end up besting two other recent strong openers. “Captain Fantastic” (Bleecker Street) and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (The Orchard) continue to have strong expansions; both could end up over $10 million as well.
Asian wide-audience commercial releases are performing well in domestic play, with entries from South Korea, India, the Philippines along with China continuing to deliver strong niche results.

Topped by Star Trek Beyond, five films grossed over $20 million this weekend for the first time since May 24, 2015 and for only the sixth time ever*. In the five previous instances $45.6 million was the largest gross for the #1 film when Monsters University topped the weekend back on June 30, 2013, which separates this weekend from the rest thanks to the estimated $59.6 million Beyond delivered in its debut performance. Also opening this weekend, and topping the $20 million threshold, was the impressive performance from New Line and Warner's Lights Out along with the rather disappointing opening for Ice Age: Collision Course.
