‘Homeland’ Recap: Carrie, Saul and Quinn Get Back to Business in Episode 3, ‘The Covenant’

29 January 2017 7:18 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler alert: Do not read unless you have seen “Homeland’s” Jan. 29 episode, “The Covenant.”

Carrie learns a hard lesson and finagles her way out of a jam as only she can. Saul bares down on a bad guy with fast-talking intensity, furrowed brow and formidable beard. And Quinn gets a good chunk of his groove back in the third episode of “Homeland’s” sixth season, “The Covenant.”

The episode written by Ron Nyswaner and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter finds our characters doing what they do best, albeit in a slightly different context than in past seasons. This episode felt like a table-setting for more dramatic developments to come. But it is always a pleasure to watch these great actors — Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin and Rupert Friend — bring to life telling moments big and small that add to depth to their characters.

Meanwhile, the episode also lays the track for renewed suspicion of F. Murray Abraham’s »

Were the execs premature in renewing the series so far in advance? Will Homeland continue to draw viewers? Stay tuned. The rest of the cast includes Rupert Friend, Elizabeth Marvel, F. Murray Abraham and Mandy Patinkin. Expected to recur this season are Sebastian Koch, Maury Sterling, Hill Harper, Patrick Sabongui, Robert Knepper, and Dominic Fumusa. »

Framing Wes Anderson’s Memories

17 January 2017 9:43 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The frames-within-frames Wes Anderson uses in his work show his filmography’s obsession with memory. The Grand Budapest Hotel (Anderson, 2014).

The artist Joseph Cornell took glass-fronted boxes and placed things such as birds, springs, ice cubes, and balls inside them, turning these everyday and otherwise benign objects into microcosms for something bigger than any of us can ever be. These boxes were referred to as “shadow boxes”, “memory boxes” and “poetic theaters,” and with each box the viewer is given an invitation to enter a new world. This world is not unknown to the individual viewer, but instead a collective and shared world in which memories exist. As the artist’s website states: “using things we can see, Cornell made boxes about things we cannot see: ideas, memories, fantasies, and dreams.” The boxes, both tragic and beautiful, present an artist trying as hard as they can to turn something intangible, something »

‘Homeland’ Ep Talks Carrie’s Mission, Quinn’s Vulnerability, Filming Challenges in Season Premiere

15 January 2017 9:17 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Peter Quinn, wounded warrior.

The season premiere of “Homeland” makes it clear that the mental and physical rehabilitation of the cunning CIA operative played by Rupert Friend will be a major focus of the show in its sixth season.

At its core, “Homeland” has sought to examine all sides of the fallout from 9/11 and the war on terror. So a deep dive into the trauma of those wounded in battle — wherever it may take place — was a natural focus for the show, says exec producer-director Lesli Linka Glatter. Quinn ended last season in a coma after suffering near-fatal exposure to chemical weapons inflicted by a terror cell in Berlin.

“To see someone like Quinn, who has been at the top of his game, out in the world trying to fight for the greater good, and then to be in a whole different state where he’s not capable of doing the most normal things on his own »

‘Homeland’ Review: Season 6 Premiere Answers the Quinn Question and Poses Many More

15 January 2017 6:00 PM, PST | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

[Editor’s Note: The following review of “Homeland” Season 6, Episode 1, “Fair Game,” contains spoilers.]

Immediate Reaction

Quinn is alive! …and boy is he in trouble. Our immediate elation over Rupert Friend’s return to “Homeland” (following a cliffhanger ending in Season 5 that left his well-being very much in doubt) was slowly reined in over the course of the hour-long premiere. Severely inhibited mentally and physically restricted, Quinn has all but given up at this point in his journey. He’s throwing his money away on prostitutes and drugs, searching for any kind of reprieve from the agony plaguing his mind and body. By episode’s end, Carrie takes pity on his living situation, but it will likely be a long road to back to proper health for the fan favorite.

‘Homeland’ Star Elizabeth Marvel: ‘It’s a Wonderful Time’ to Be Playing the President-Elect

13 January 2017 4:43 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When “Homeland” returns for its sixth season on Sunday, a few changes will be in store. Not only will the series be set in the United States for the first time, but the commander-in-chief about to be sworn in will be a woman. Executive producer Alex Gansa has said he didn’t, however, model the character on former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. And Elizabeth Marvel, the actress who plays the Peotus, says she had some very different politicians in mind as she prepared for the role.

Here, Marvel tells Variety why she channeled former President George W. Bush, what to expect from President-Elect Elizabeth Keane this season, and why it’s important for our leaders to pay attention to the intelligence community.

What made you want to take on the role?

Who wouldn’t want to play the leader of the free world? It’s a fascinating compliment to play the president-elect. The »

‘Homeland’ Review: Season 6 Makes You Wait for the Big Moments, But There’s Reason to Believe in Carrie Again

9 January 2017 12:54 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It all comes down to trust.

In the opening two episodes of “Homeland” Season 6, an ample number of suspicious storylines emerge for a series built on spycraft: Carrie (Claire Danes) is working out of New York for Otto During, the billionaire philanthropist introduced last season in Berlin. But is she there for the right reasons? Is he? Saul (Mandy Patinkin) is still working closely with Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham), as the two vet the new President-Elect (Elizabeth Marvel) for the CIA. Yet her true motivations — personal and political — are kept in the dark, at least to the two men looking for the light. Meanwhile, a young black Muslim named Sekou Bah (newcomer J. Mallory McCree) is busy recording passionate videos chronicling terrorist attacks around New York City. Is he a legitimate terrorist threat or just a politically active kid?

Oh, and in case anyone cares, the Quinn question hanging »

Mindy Newell Is Writing This During The Giants / Packers Game

9 January 2017 10:00 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

The Crown Season 1

This is going to be a relatively unusual column today as I am frequently stopping to watch the New York Giants/Green Bay Packers wild card game. Right now there are 20 seconds left in the 1st quarter, the G’ints just punted, and Green Bay’s drive will start on the 45 yard line. The Giants should be up by at least one touchdown, but Beckham has dropped two perfect passes in the end zone – commentators Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are speculating that it’s because of the cold weather and although that’s possible, that’s not what I expect from a player of Beckham’s caliber. He made the All-Pro team this year. Anyway, the G’ints are up by a field goal (that’s three points for you non-football fans out there) and Green Bay has yet to put anything on the board.
