It was decided a few years ago by much wiser heads than mine, that the 1,600px limit was a good size for downloading onto computers, while it didn't compromise the integrity and quality of the picture seen on the screen. (The only exception to this perhaps would be large panoramas).
I've insisted on the 1,600px size for all my challenges ever since I started hosting, and have found it to be easy to download to computers with slow connections.
Many DPR members live in countries and towns with slow internet connections, and it is fairer to everyone that there is a level playing field when viewing the entries, particularly in Full Screen or Slide Show Mode.
I know a number of DPR members who, like me, always reduce the size of their entries to 1,600px whether the host requires it or not. This also gives some protection against theft of photos by unscrupulous people out there, because they aren't interested in small size photos for reproduction and printing.
