On behalf of the Local Organising Committee it is a great pleasure to welcome you to the College’s 2011 annual Scientific Conference to be held at The Sage, an iconic venue in the heart of Northeast England. The Sage’s Quayside location is an inspirational setting which affords fabulous views of Newcastle and Gateshead.

The scientific programme encompasses the emergency care spectrum including contemporary clinical and management themes. The 2011 conference will bring special focus on innovations in emergency medicine, looking beyond the stethoscope at the point of care, the forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games, medical education and the business management aspects of Emergency medicine.

I invite you to take part in our emergency medicine themed “Dragons Den” by bringing along your own business ideas and attempting to sell it to our panel of experts in front of an audience. You will also have access to a number of practical workshops like “Simulating Simulation” and “Point of Care Ultrasound.” Within the programme there are also themes specifically addressing academic skills, critical appraisal, emergency planning, trauma, patient safety, and toxicology. As always, the autumn conference will include a full APEM programme which addresses topics from infancy to adolescence.

I am pleased to welcome our international plenary speakers as well as our international delegates who will bring added quality and value to the programme. I am grateful to all our industry sponsors for their continued support which enables us to organise and deliver this prestigious conference.

We are also working hard to ensure that delegates have the opportunity to explore this beautiful part of England and sample our legendary Geordie Welcome. Delegates will also have the opportunity to explore the region and visit places like Holy Island, Alnwick Castle, Northumberland National Park, Beamish Open Air Museum as well as The Metro Centre, Europe’s largest shopping and leisure facility. I am also delighted to confirm that the formal conference dinner will be held at the landmark Newcastle Civic Centre.
