Director’s Message
Our staff consists of PhD and master’s level professionals in the fields of Counseling, Human Services, and Social Work. Additionally we have graduate student interns and graduate/undergraduate peer counselors assigned. All of our staff members are under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Attending college can be challenging as well as rewarding. Among the common issues with which our staff can help are:
- Managing time
- Improving academic performance
- Balancing work, school, and personal relationships
- Negotiating life-stage transitions and dilemmas
- Coping with anxiety and depression
- Working through loss and grief
- Resolving relationship difficulties
- Adapting to a new culture or country
- Recovering from trauma / responding to traumatic events
- Dealing with challenges associated with various social/cultural factors (such as being a person of color, identifying as LGBT, being the first-generation to attend college, etc.)
- Identifying and managing self-destructive behavioral patterns, including eating disorders and problems with alcohol and drug abuse.
- Individual/Group Counseling
- Crisis Intervention
- Personal Development Workshops
- Inventories and Career Exploration
- Peer Counseling
- Veterans Affairs
Our service approach is ecological: We recognize that our students come from diverse backgrounds and that their health and educational needs transcend individual factors and are impacted by surrounding cultural, institutional, socioeconomic, and political influences. We are committed to reaching students, including those from traditionally-under served groups, and providing programming to help the DSU community realize its full potential to be psychologically healthy and socially just.
Confidentiality: Counseling sessions take place in private, and the relationship between counselors and students are held in strictest confidence.

Our Mission
Our mission, under the auspices of the Vice President for Student Affairs, is designed to help students to meet their personal, social, and academic needs. Counselors are involved in helping students explore their needs, feelings, interpersonal relationships and life goals. Student personal development workshops, individual, and group counseling sessions are provided for all categories of our student population.
The strategies employed by counselors are to maximize student’s growth and successful completion of the University experience. Our mission is consistent with the mission of the student affairs division and university as a whole in that it supports the empowerment of students to establish and maintain a collegiate atmosphere conducive to the highest level of academic and personal success.
