Leigh Freund

President & CEO

As President & CEO of NAI, Leigh Freund leads the organization’s growth and helps set the agenda and strategic priorities. Leigh joined NAI in 2015 after an eleven-year career at AOL Inc., where she served as vice president & chief counsel for global public policy.

Leigh brings more than a decade of substantive expertise in privacy, advertising, and public policy in the digital sector to her work at NAI. She has first-hand knowledge of the tremendous contributions third parties have made in the digital advertising space and she is a passionate believer in strong self-regulation.

During her time at AOL, Leigh led the company’s public policy efforts and was a leading voice on global digital and technology policy. Prior to that role, Leigh headed up the AOL advertising legal team and worked with AOL’s privacy team to promote and develop responsible use and collection of data, and ensure compliance with the industry's self-regulatory programs.

Before joining AOL in 2004, Leigh worked at K&L Gates and on Capitol Hill with Rep. Fred Upton from her home state of Michigan.

Leigh holds an undergraduate degree in political science from Kalamazoo College and a J.D. from Georgetown University. She is an active participant in several industry organizations devoted to compliance with key regulatory initiatives and principles, including the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA).

Noga Rosenthal

General Counsel and VP, Compliance & Policy

As General Counsel and Vice President for Compliance and Policy for the NAI, Noga Rosenthal leads the NAI's compliance program. With an extensive background in online advertising, legal issues and emerging technologies, Noga helps to ensure members’ compliance with the NAI Code and policy requirements. 

Through tough enforcement, ongoing investigations, and annual member compliance reviews, Noga helps to ensure that NAI member companies deliver on the promise of self-regulation for interest-based advertising.

Prior to joining the NAI, Noga Rosenthal was senior vice president and general counsel of Xaxis, 24/7 Media, Inc. and Media Innovation Group, LLC, WPP plc companies.

As general counsel of these companies, Noga worked to ensure that users' privacy was taken into consideration when developing and creating new products. She also provided online advertising privacy training to colleagues and clients and advised her colleagues on international data protection laws.

Noga represented her companies as a member of each of the Advisory Board of the Digital Advertising Alliance, the Legal Affairs Council and Public Policy Council of the Interactive Advertising Bureau, the International Association of Privacy Professionals Education Advisory Board and the NAI board of directors.

Prior to joining 24/7 Media, Noga served as assistant vice president at Sotheby's, Inc. and as a corporate associate at DLA Piper. Noga holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Political Science from the Rutgers College and a J.D. from Fordham Law School. She is a member of the New York and New Jersey bars.

Anthony Matyjaszewski

Counsel & Director of Compliance

As Counsel & Director of Compliance, Anthony Matyjaszewski conducts the NAI's annual compliance reviews of member companies and manages the pre-certification and onboarding of new members. Prior to joining the NAI, Anthony researched and wrote about the issues at the intersection of law and technology. He has clerked at both the NAI and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) where he co-wrote an article on the changing meaning of personal data. Before pursuing his legal career, Anthony managed customer relations at an international travel company, where he played a key role in the transition from an offline to an online business model, focusing on data protection, web and email integration, and the implementation of an intuitive and customer friendly user interface.

He received his B.A. cum laude in Psychology from the University of Maine at Farmington, where he was a member of the Psi Chi Honor Society. Anthony earned a J.D. cum laude from the University of Maine School of Law.  Anthony is a Certified Information Privacy Professional, and Red Cross certified Wilderness Emergency Responder, and, in addition to English, is fluent in both French and Polish.

Jurgen Van Staden

Counsel & Director of Policy

As Counsel & Director of Policy, Jurgen Van Staden helps members comply with the NAI Code of Conduct and works with the NAI staff, Board and membership to address policy developments that may impact the Code or the third-party digital advertising ecosystem.  With a strong background in privacy and information security, Jurgen helps conduct annual compliance reviews which are the keystone of the NAI’s self-regulatory program.

Prior to joining the NAI, Jurgen headed up the New York office for a European Union-based data protection consulting firm where his work focused on transnational data transfer compliance. Jurgen also worked as a Senior Risk Analyst and Cyber Security Attorney for a leading information security services and consulting firm before attending The George Washington University Law School where he earned a Masters in Law.

While at The George Washington University Law School Jurgen focused his LL.M. studies on the intersection of law, technology and policy completing courses in Privacy Law, Cyber Law, Computer Crime, E-Commerce and Digital Copyrights. In addition to his LL.M, Jurgen holds a Masters of Computer Science from the University of Tulsa’s Institute for Information Security and a J.D. from the College of Law.  

Originally from South Africa, Jurgen came to the United States on a college tennis scholarship and earned his undergraduate degree in Marketing while competing in NCAA Div. I Tennis.  He is a registered EuroPriSe Seal Legal and Technical expert and holds several federal information security certifications. 

Shaq Katikala

Counsel and Assistant Director for Technology & Data Science

As Counsel and Assistant Director for Technology & Data Science, Shaq Katikala brings a wide breadth of knowledge in technology and data fields to the NAI team. Shaq conducts research, assists with the NAI compliance review process, and helps develop best practices and new guidance consistent with the high standards of the NAI Code.

Prior to his current position, Shaq was the first fellow in NAI’s Compliance and Technology NAI Fellowship program. Shaq also previously participated in a three-month internship program with NAI where he served as a privacy law clerk.

Shaq currently studies data analytics part-time at Stanford University’s Graduate Certificate program in Mining Massive Data Sets. He is also a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP). He received a J.D. from the New York Law School, where he served as a member of the Law Review and competed nationally with the Dispute Resolution Team. While in law school, he worked as an Internet free speech law clerk at the Media Coalition, as well as a web developer for a small startup. Shaq received a B.A. from New College of Florida in 2010 in Economics/Philosophy, with a thesis on predicting demand for creative goods.

Julie Karasik

Technologist

As the Technologist at the NAI, Julie Karasik is an integral member of the compliance team. Julie works with NAI's nearly 100 member companies in integrating their opt-out mechanisms into the central NAI consumer opt-out tool. She also performs monitoring to ensure that the opt-out process is working smoothly for consumers across all participating member networks, and assists members in diagnosing and fixing any problems related to this essential function. She also directly assists consumers with opt-out issues.

Julie's wide ranging technology background makes her well-qualified to take on the responsibilities of NAI's industry-leading compliance team. Her background includes coding in JS, PHP, Perl and more. In addition, during her career, she has managed servers and databases; managed developers; and directed web design. Prior to joining NAI, Julie served as an Advisor to PLOW, a social content platform startup.

Julie received a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University, where she was pre-med before deciding to pursue her passion for technology.
