DSU Optics Center
The Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR) at Delaware State University

(currently under construction).
Dear Friend of OSCAR,
The opening of the new state-of-the-art Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR) Building at Delaware State University marks an exciting step forward for DSU and the wider community. With your help, we look forward to expanding upon DSU’s impressive history of accomplishment in optics:
- Over $40 million in competitive research grants obtained;
- National and international recognition for its role in NASA’s most recent mission to the planet Mars;
- New Master of Science and PhD programs in optics;
- Significant contributions to our understanding of optical techniques for the early detection of diseases, pollutants and other threats to our well-being.
The building would not have been possible without the generous support of the State of Delaware, but we need the help of donors like you to help realize the program’s scientific, educational and economic development goals, including:
- Fostering the development of new high-technology companies;
- Allowing DSU to recruit and retain highly qualified scientists in the rapidly growing field of optics;
- Attracting additional federal research dollars;
- Increasing the size of the undergraduate and graduate programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM);
- Improving STEM education by training teachers and giving opportunities to K-12 students to learn from scientists about their work;
- Buying new and moving existing equipment.
OSCAR is one of the few centers for applied research in optics in the country and one of even fewer with an expertise in the promising field of biophotonics. I hope you will join us in this ambitious journey of discovery, education and economic growth that will benefit not only Kent County, but Delaware and the nation!
Sincerely,
Dr. Noureddine Melikechi
Director, OSCAR
Vice President for Research, Innovation and Economic Development

“By investing in this project, we are investing in the future of our state. Students are gaining the great potential to learn cutting edge science and technology for the jobs of tomorrow. Strong universities will give us the educated workforce we need for the future, and further strengthen Delaware as an attractive place for innovative businesses.”
Governor Jack Markell in announcing the State of Delaware’s commitment to funding Phase I of the new optics facility
