Week in Review: One for the history books

Both are good points. Sales has a lot to do with system support, both figuratively and physically. Ricoh/Pentax need to keep the momentum going, like a snowball. Keep its user base and potential user base (thats the key) informed of service upgrades and lens road maps, all of it.

Just about every big new camera is most popular for at least a little while. And in between releases the top camera is generally the one which just had some sort of update, or new lens released. All it shows is how many people are clicking on the camera page over the last few days, for whatever reason. It doesn't really say anything for a new camera to be the most popular.

If it's still there in, say, a month? Then it might be meaningful.

Jorge, obviously you are not stupid. You care or feel insecure enough about Pentax to troll in the comment sections for days on end.

Jorge, come on, preorder one at last.

I guess next right step for Pentax would be MFT mirroless and no more APS-C DSLR.

@Jorge - your recent activity, your history is visible you realize, suggests that your protestations of camera agnosticism is rather suspect. We get it, you're not a fan of Pentax. Not sure why your self-worth is wrapped up in that fact...

Jorge, you are right that Nikon is no better than Pentax, that's why some of us choose Pentax.

Jorge, then you need to go argue with the person that said "No brand is better than the other one" in the post above. He is in your mirror.

Even if that were true, and I don't know that it is, why would you care? Is this some kind of life mission for you? A Pentax shooter once beat you to shot or something?

There are fanatics in every forum. At some point, their camera manufacturer of choice did something (in their view) better than all the competition they viewed. Over time, maybe the competition improved, but not enough to make a switch over. Also consider that the technology leader changes periodically, so Canon might lead for a while, then Nikon, then Olympus or Pentax, then back to Canon. It's like the stock market. The happiest people are the ones who focus on the bright side of their system and enjoy it. I occasionally look longingly at what Sony, Fuji, Pentax, or even Canon is doing with their cameras, but I am still very happy with my choice of camera system (Micro 4/3) because, for my needs, it was the best when I chose it and it still does 90% of what I'd like it to do. If someone came in and needlessly trashed my system, I might argue and try to show them why it has admirable qualities, and I would expect users of other systems would do the same.

I am happy for Pentax people. When I was first shopping for a DSLR back in 2004, Pentax made a very compelling argument, and it's always been an intriguing and unique alternative to Canon and Nikon. I'd be excited if I were invested in the Pentax system right now.

I am also happy for Pentax, but the point Jorge raises about lenses is about the system itself. There is a need to have lenses that will not be outresolved by the undoubtedly excellent sensor they have selected for the K1.

There are 15 current-production AF lenses for Pentax Full-Frame. Twelve are shown in this search: http://www.pentaxforums.com/lenssearch/?format=ff&focusing%5B%5D=af
The others are: DA*200m f2.8, DA*300mm f4 and DA 560mm f5.6.

There are 80 AF lenses available if you include discontinued lenses available in the used market. Sigma and Tamron offer some K-mount FF AF lenses.

I've read somewhere that, unfortunately, IBIS doesn't work when on video mode, only digital stabilization.. Well, it's still better to use tripod and steadycam anyways.

As for AF lenses, there are A LOT of Pentax and Third-party AF full frame lenses available for this new Pentax K-1, and you can also use all the APS-C lenses on it when in Crop Mode also including in Full Frame Mode!
Hell, you can even use 645 Pentax lenses on it via a dedicated adapter!

Why you always gotta be such a downer, brownie? The K-1 is going to have a ripple effect on pricing throughout the camera world eventually. That's good news no matter what brand you shoot.

K-1 was not epic? Then Name a camera that was epic in its announcement.

Of course it is epic. Pentax is one of the companies that once defined 35 mm SLR. Pentax Spotmatic anyone? And K1000? And MX? And now Pentax is back with FF 35 mm cameras. Sure, other manufacturers have also their epic FF DSLR moments. But, I would clearly call the Pentax FF release a special one.

Why mirrorless? The battery runs quickly down, the viewfinder isn't great for any lighting situation, you have a delay in the viewfinder (not good for action/sports), AF in low light is very slow, AF-C isn't performing the same as with a DSLR.

Well sure, but try writing a series of articles like "Is 20 megapixels enough?" or "Do you really need to keep upgrading?" or "Three cameras to avoid." Do that for a few months and see what happens.

Sure this place is about to sell cameras. it is very gear centric and compares technology a lot instead of using photography as art (art doesn't care for megapixel runs and pixel peeping).

It's gear-centric and technical because the gear and technology enable the art. We're trying to do this for you so you, the artist, don't have to and can choose the best tool for your vision.

...though I still think it is a great camera and I might buy one. Intesting that the Pentax is the same price and will crush it in picture quality - obviously slower camera though. Apples to bricks comparison.

Wow, hundreds really ... You must be a Nikon Fan boy.. I've had real people look at photos of my Xt1 , 5dm3 and D750 and most people like the images from the Fuji.. There sensors are made by angles . Get a life and stop thinking your negative comments are intelligent... ok best images from an apsc mirrorsless, does that make you happy .. Thematic ...

Don't know why your conclusion is that somebody must be a Nikon fanboy. That is probably the small world in your head to categorize somebody as a fanboy. A bit overreacting and pathetic, don't you think? If you don't care about gear why is that important at all?

I dont know i you are referíng to the new Pentax but the k-1 i guess is for their faithful loyal customers, giving them what they asked for years. It was not to compete with nikon or canon. The Pentax community it big, maybe very small in comparison with the nikon or canon but still its going to be very very popular and sucessful in the market...the new Pentax FF and the d500 are going to be the two best dslr of 2016, their users waited almost forever.
The last two month have been huge news in the photo community, but not because a silly selfie camera or because of the d5 or canon 80d wich look just like ordinary updates.

The K1 is likely to equal any existing body that is utilizing the SONY 36 meg sensor in terms of ISO performance. For a landscape/night scape shooter it will best anything being offered by Nikon or Canon at this point in time. With 5 axis stabilization, the percentage of keepers when shooting action/sports, is likely to be pretty high. I don't find any DSLR in either Nikon or Canon's lineup that is as compelling at this point. Judging from what I've read of the color processing employed by the K1 in the pixel shift mode, it's color and B&W renditions are likely to be superior as well. Your mileage may vary, of course, if you're not shooting landscapes.

Every camera doesn't need sky's the limits specs. Look where that led Samsung with the NX1. I expect the Pentax K-1 to be good at what it sets out to do-which will make it a success in my books. For those needing 178 focus points, there was a time we focused ALL lenses manually and set exposure without ANY kind of meter-in-camera or out.

I don't get utphoto's comment on how 5 axis image stabilisation will produce more keepers in action/sports photography when in this kind of photography one usually uses high shutter speed to freeze the action. At the same time it is well know fact that IBIS is not that effective with tele lenses likely used for sports photography. To me the opposite is true, 5 axis ibis will produce more keepers for low light still life photography, or images with lower iso thus better IQ.

Hyperbole much? It isn't, but if you have IBIS, you can have both, as having IBIS doesn't prevent lens-based stabilization. If you don't have IBIS, well... Not a lot out there yet, but if I recall correctly, Sigma did lens-based stabilization for Pentax and Sony a couple of times, so it's an option you can't get on a Nikon or Canon body.

In any case, if you're on a camera line where there is a lot of old glass kicking around, as is the case with Pentax, then IBIS is a very, very, useful feature.

Nobody disputes that ibis is a useful and desirable feature, only questions utphoto's comment on how will ibis produce more keepers in action and sport photography. One would agree that on mirrorless ibis can stabilise preview of longer telephoto without OIS thus making framing easier, but on a camera with mirror?

Lens-based stabilization seems to be more effective, that is the reason why even FUJI is making it with the entire FUJI X system. Also Sony doesn't have it in most models of the A7 series and those systems are new designs.
