Ms Marvel informed Tony Stark of what had happened in Japan, including the suspicion by his former teammates that he was a Skrull himself. A disturbed Stark accepted this, claimed that his possession and DNA restructuring by Ultron verified his authenticity, then demanded to know where Nick Fury was, because he would know what to do. Carol didn't know. Stark agreed with Black Panther's opinion that this was just the beginning of an invasion, and convinced her to joina larger battle against the aliens. Stark assumed that one of the Avengers was a Skrull sent to kill him, and with Ms Marvel on the mission the Skrull would know that the Avengers were now aware of the Skrull threat. Ms Marvel convinced the others that she merely wanted to get back to doing something useful, and did not tell them what happened in Japan.
Iron Man was shocked by the Skrull corpse, realizing it to be a repercussion of the Illuminati's attack years prior. He called forth the Guardians of the Galaxy to assess the intergalactic threat, and they debated over whether this meant an invasion had taken place. The group was caught off guard, however, when Rocket Raccoon voiced his opinion. It was revealed that he was in fact a Skrull as well, and fought the others over the body. This Skrull showed to possess the powers of all the members of the Guardians. After Drax managed to kill him, the Illuminati were attacked by two more Skrulls:
◾ A Skrull that had Cyclops' optic blasts, Nightcrawler's prehensile tail, and Colossus' metallic skin.
◾ A Skrull that wielded a technological copy of Thor's hammer Mjolnir.
These Skrulls were killed by Iron Man who detonated a small nuclear bomb with his armor. Peter Quill reminded them that any of them could also be a Skrull, and that no one was to be trusted. The group then went their separate ways once more.
Then Ms Marvel battled the villains Cobalt Man and the original Cyclone, both supposedly deceased. She was then confronted by a group of Skrulls posing as Kree Soldiers, who attempted to kill her but were quickly defeated by Marvel with the aid of Iron Man. She then went on to confront the Fantastic Four over her identity, and then shared with them her experiences fighting both Cobalt Man and Cyclone. Shortly thereafter, Marvel went to interrogate Cobalt Man, who revealed himself to be a Skrull and stated "You are not Ms Marvel". Meanwhile, Wilson Fisk, was revealed to be a Skrull as well. Iron Man was suspicious of Marvel's true identity and sent Hercules, Ant-Man, and Black Panther to investigate. The Skrull impersonating Cobalt Man revealed to Ms Marvel that he was in fact a Skrull sleeper agent named Khn'nr created to pose as the real Tony Stark. However, despite his status, Marvel decided to fight against the invading Skrulls.
Iron Man told S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, a member of Ms. Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. strike force Operation Lightning Storm, about the coming invasion and stated that he believed Black Panther was actually a Skrull agent. A Skrull named Rl'nnd was found by Ms. Marvel in what she believed was an A.I.M. lair and attacked her, only to escape. Afterward, Ms. Marvel found the body of a former friend of hers. Agent Coulson and the rest of Lightning Storm tried to capture Ms. Marvel under the impression that she was the murderer. Eventually both Ms. Marvel and the Skrull impostor were captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. with Rl'nnd following in disguise. After Rl'nnd revealed himself, the Skrull Ms. Marvel told Ms. Marvel that her friend was a Kree. She also had disguised herself as him to convince Ms. Marvel he was dead, and that he was still alive.
A Skrull posing as Daredevil met Echo outside of Matt Murdock's office. Echo saw through its disguise since the Skrull's weren't aware of Daredevil's current activities. With Mantis's help, Echo repelled the Skrull.
Iron Man called in two of the brightest minds on Earth: Doctor Reed Richards and Doctor Henry Pym to examine the body of the Elektra-Skrull that Spider-Woman brought to him. He knew it was just the beginning of an invasion.
Meanwhile, The Peak, S.W.O.R.D.'s headquarters, hosted a meeting between various world security agencies. As Commander Dugan arrived, a Skrull ship entered Earth's atmosphere and crashed in the Savage Land. Tony Stark got called in by Agent Brand, leaving Reed and Hank to examine the Skrull.
Iron Man called forth the Fantastic Four, but only Johnny Storm answered. He contacted the remainder of the team and told them about the crashed Skrull ship.
The Fantastic Four and the Guardians of the Galaxy meet up in the Savage Land near the crashed ship, now joined by the real Rocket Raccoon, each side ready to fight. As Drax pried open the Skrull ship, S.H.I.E.L.D. was receiving live video feeds from Iron Man's armor. Both Agent Coulson and Maria Hill, upon seeing Drax pry open the ship, decided to take "action".
Maria Hill set off an explosion that destroyed S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, saying "He Loves You" just before the blast. Phil Coulson had uploaded a virus into the Stark computer mainframe, saying "He Loves You" causing Iron Man's armor to malfunction and disable Tony Stark and infecting the entire Stark computer network with an alien virus from satellites to defense systems. Ms. Marvel called the Helicarrier, but no one responded. G.W. Bridge ordered everyone to abandon ship as the Helicarrier had lost all power and control, falling down toward a city.
Meanwhile, a multitude of villains and national security threats are released from prisons and holding cells throughout the entire galaxy.
Meanwhile at the Baxter Building, a Skrull disguised as a tourist changed into Susan Storm, entered the lab, and opened a gateway to the Negative Zone, again saying "He loves You", and creating a massive vacuum within the Baxter Building that began to engulf the building and the surroundings.
In the Savage Land, Iron Man slipped into a seizure as the Skrull ship opened, revealing its cargo: Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Susan Storm, Daredevil, Emma Frost, and Mantis, claiming that they had made it back to Earth. "Emma Frost", who emerged from the ship, asked the gathered Avengers who exactly they were.
In orbit, Agent Asdit and his team were safe in stasis gel. He called for help only to realize that a massive Skrull invasion fleet had just arrived on Earth's doorstep.
At the lab, Reed realized how the Skrulls became undetectable and turned to tell Hank. Pym pulled out a laser weapon and shot Richards which destabilized him. As Hank transformed into a Skrull, he said "He Even Loves You".
Despite the urging of Ares that their confrontation was merely a distraction from the true battle, the assembled heroes from the ship and their counterparts on Earth began fighting, both sides convinced that their opponents were the Skrulls. In the ensuing battle, the Iron Scarlet Witch and Iron Man from the ship were both killed and reverted into Skrulls, while Mantis insisted she was not an impostor. Mantis also stated that the Daredevil from the ship may, in fact, be the genuine article. While Black Panther disappeared into the jungle and Earth's Ms. Marvel headed back to the States, Earth's Iron Man (still suffering from the Skrull virus) started to build himself a new suit from the wreckage of a nearby lab. Not being able to combat the power of the Silver Surfer the Skrulls decided the best way to deal with him was to make the Surfer have a psychotic episode. With Silver Surfer believing that a Skrull posing as the Sub-Mariner told him, opted to stay out of the fight. Skrull Morg showed up battling Skrulls and saving Shalla-Bal promising to do all that The Silver Surfer wouldn't do. In Manhattan, meanwhile, the first wave of Super Skrull shock troops bearing the abilities of Earth's super-humans arrived.
Meanwhile, Britain was also attacked by a Skrull armada and a wave of empowered Super Skrulls. The Skrulls had infiltrated the ranks of the British government, though they were exposed by Howard the Duck, who is now currently living in Britain and running for office. The Skrulls' target was Senator Charles Dalton, who was in Britain on a mission with the UN. To protect this source of magic Howard the Duck attacked a Skrull missile head on, possibly sacrificing himself.
During the evacuation of Helicarrier, the Agent Coulson Impersonator confronted Tony Stark about surrendering to the Skrulls.
In Times Square the Avengers tried their best to battle the invading forces. The team was joined by many young unknown trainee mutants from Xavier Institute to assist, but this did not help with their battle, until Nick Fury and his new rebel commandos arrived.
Ms Marvel then attacked and knocked out Echo all but solidifying that Ms. Danvers had been replaced. After the scuffle the impostor found Stark and congratulated him calling him her lover Kr’Ali and confirming that she was the Skrull Queen.
During the battle in New York, the Inhumans arrive on Earth to land in the middle of the fight. Karnak, apparently a secret Skrull, knocked out the team and appeared to betray them. After realizing that Black Panther was about to be executed by the Skrulls, Black Bolt sweeps in to rescue him.
Whilst all of this was happening, Reed Richards was revealed to be held by Skrull forces up in Earth's orbit on an unidentified armada ship, stretched to his physical limits and surrounded by a crowd of Skrull watchers and scientists, helpless against the threats and torture. Agent Scott Asdit managed to break through the exterior of another ship and made it into one of the central control rooms, seeing the images of the invasion, death, and destruction the Skrulls were making on Earth, as well as the torture of Mr. Fantastic on his radars. A Skrull guard and a youngster found and pointed a gun at him. The Silver Surfer was up in orbit, still being tormented by the false words of the Skrull Morg impostor and refusing to help.
Down in the chaotic battle in Manhattan, Nick Fury and the new rebel Commandos showed promises of turning the tide; the real Scarlet Witch, after being heavily blasted by a group of Skrull soldiers ended up rising in the middle of Fury and his group in Times Square as they fought, shocked by the return of the ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. leader. As they quickly headed into the fray, Quicksilver appeared and managed to rescue all the downed Avengers and Initiative cadets before further execution and casualties. The real Ms. Marvel proceeded to help, but soon after was shot by Fury, whom was unconvinced she was the real Carol Danvers. After being shot back into another street, the Skrull onlookers quickly overran her, with the Skrull Henry Pym looking down at her with a smirk on his face. Fury then called his men to retreat so that they could plan their next move.
Watching the battle via news broadcast on live television, the real Wilson Fisk decided to take his rebuilt empire of the New York City criminal roster and battle the Skrulls, as "no more Earth is bad for business". In the Bermuda Triangle, JARVIS, who had been hacked into by the Skrulls, attacked Maria Hill in an attempt to get her to surrender, but Maria refused and said it was still her ship, but the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents turned into Skrulls. Back in the Savage Land, Skrull Black Panther meets a hiding Tony Stark and continues to persuade Tony into believing he was a Skrull sleeper agent named Kl'Riki Dulu, and that she would find a way to turn him back to his original form and praised him as the greatest Skrull Warrior to ever live. The real Black Panther was revealed to be watching the conversation, and proceeded to enter and attack the impostor. The Impostor Black Panther managed to escape when some Skrull soldiers distracted T'Challa, and T'Challa injected Tony with a dose of adrenaline to keep him going. He convinced him to continue the fight, despite the words of his Skrull self and the possibility of him being a sleeper. The two concluded that Tony had to rebuild the armor quick, and return to New York as soon as possible.
After Fury and his commandos moved on, the view shifted to innocent civilians evading Skrull forces in Central Park. As they were about to be killed by some Skrull soldiers, the Hulk arrives plowing through his enemies, a large beast streaks through the crowd. As the civilians look through the destruction, the shadowy figure of what appeared to be Hulk in the New York City lights could be seen. Another mysterious figure was shown watching the event from another location with a pair of binoculars; the figure then proceeded to move from his position, and suddenly Deadpool was seen.
Meanwhile, Hercules encounters a Skrull in the form of his former lover, Deianira made love after she confessed to him that she didn't want to be alone anymore. After coming to his senses, an impending battle between Hercules and a massively powered Deianira ensues, the one in the sentence "He loves you". However, Hercules won the battle after stabbing her, one of their most equipped soldiers, giving the Skrulls a huge upset in their war campaign.
As the Skrulls comfortably settled in Portland, Oregon, enslaving the population, the Skrulls repeatedly announced that any attempt at resistance would be met with extreme force. Deadpool and Copycat, disguised as slaves, attacked the Skrulls, freaking Nita Prentiss who had been captured. The trio captured the regional Skrull commander, taking only his head, bringing it to their underwater saucer where GW Bridge and Maria Hill were waiting. They extracted military secrets from the severed head just as they were attacked. The odd team repelled the attack, liberated Portland, set a course for Seattle to secure that city, then intended on securing the country before moving to Japan, but they questioned who they could trust.
Norman Osborn talked a Skrull-Ms Marvel out of destroying his carnies, sending him away in anguish. He then declared to U.S. troops that they were at war.
Nick Fury arrived with the Inhumans, his new rebel Commandos, and the Avengers at his new command post. The Vision survived an attempted murder by the Skrulls, but remained rather disfigured/damaged. He awaited with his team for the Skrulls to announced their plans for Earth and they did. Using generated images of various leaders including the Pope, Barack Obama, John McCain, Eric Cartman, Tony Stark, Namor, Doctor Doom, Kim Jong Un, and others, the Skrulls announced that they intended on assimilating all humans into their culture and way of life, declaring Earth part of the Skrull empire. The only way for the human race to save their planet was to assimilate.
Meanwhile in space, Agent Asdit successfully infiltrated the Skrull ship holding Mr. Fantastic captive where he battled the Skrulls experimenting on them, either killing or disabling them and freeing Dr. Richards. Frustrated, he decompressed the ship, throwing every Skrull out into space. Richards panicked, threatening Asdit, demanding the location of his family, believing that he was to be a Skrull. He revealed that the Skrulls needed him alive to assist in the invasion. Richards tested Asdit to prove he was not a Skrull as the ship they had commandeered came under attack. The two eventually managed to convince each other and teamed up to engage and destroy a large portion of the Skrull fleet. Asdit then had to team up with Richards to figure out how to fly the alien ship and land it in the Savage Land.
Back on the Shield Helicarrier, Maria Hill revealing to JARVIS and the Skrull insurgents that she was using a life model decoy as Fury had suggested to her many months ago. The Skrulls killed the duplicate and Hill on a jet-pack, opened fire on the Skrulls and then managed to infiltrate JARVIS's mainframe, causing the ship and JARVIS to self-destruct.
The various superheroes, Savage Land leaders, and Skrull (or not) impersonators clashed again, about ready to fight. Each one declaring who they were or who they believed themselves to be. Emma Frost stated she could detect who was a Skrull and who was not, accusing the real Ant-Man of being an impostor. Susan Storm-Richards stated she would keep everyone in place with a force field until all was settled. Mr. Fantastic then fired into the center of the crowd of super heroes with an odd weapon. When tech dust and brightness receded, the Skrulls and humans were revealed and a battle ensued. The Skrull impostors were surprised when their skin turned green and became surprised and disoriented, making them easier to take down by the real super heroes.
The invasion reached San Francisco, new home of the X-Men. Believing the city to be virtually defenseless except for local police, they launched a small scale attack to cause enough damage to instill fear. However, their ground teams encountered unexpected superhuman resistance: Xavier's newest training mutant recruits. The X-Men launched a counter strike, defending civilians and evacuating badly attacked buildings. The Skrulls were shocked to find the X-Men in San Francisco especially when they took over their command shuttle. As the X-men made a successful gain, the Skrulls launched their super soldiers into the city from an orbiting ship.
While in Wakanda, As many Wakandan warriors died, Black Panther successfully fought off a very intimidating Super-Skrull only to be temporarily defeated by two Skrull subversives within his ranks. He then brought himself back and slaughtered dozens of the Skrull invaders, including Commander K'vvvr, he sent the entire ship loaded with the corpses of the entire Skrull invasion force back to the Skrull homeworld with a message written in blood saying "This is what happens when you invade Wakanda".
Trapped in the Negative Zone, Johnny Storm, The Thing, and Franklin Richards worked together to help Franklin temporarily learn to use his powers of reality manipulation to return the three back to New York.
Norman Osborn and his carnies launched a counter-attack on the force invading Washington DC. They managed to vanquish their Skrull opponents.
Punisher got involved in the fight against the Skrulls and easily killed them.
While flying away, his mind damaged, Silver Surfer came across a damaged Skrull ship. He landed to check it out when a still severely injured Ms Marvel stumbled out. Before she died, Ms Marvel begged the Surfer to stop the invasion but Norin Radd said this wasn't his world. Ms Marvel said it didn't matter and he was here for a reason. He had learned so much from Earth's people and the Skrulls had no honor like the humans or the Kree. Elsewhere, the Skrulls restored the global communication systems and announced their plans. Using the restored systems, they explained the Skrull Invasion with the following talking points:
They only wanted to improve Earth's culture and add to it, not kill anyone.
They had attacked organizations like the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Fantastic Four because they stood in the way of their progress as a society.
They were part of their problems and they wished to change that.
Queen Veranke arrived at Camp Hammond while the Avengers headed to New York only to find it burning. Down on the street a group of people wanted to welcome the Skrulls, but were caught between the battle between the Skrulls and Nick Fury and his troops. Kingpin and his syndicate of criminals decided to finally help out. Hulk made his presence known and met up with Deadpool. The Avengers, Nick Fury & his commandos, Kingpin's crew, Hulk, Deadpool and Copycat, and Norman Osborn and his carnies all assembled. Queen Veranke revealed that "He" was God, and it was an all out war between the Skrulls and the super-humans of Earth.
Despite the vast number of super-humans involved in the fight, briefly reunited under a single purpose again, the battle was still locked in a stand-still, until Uatu appeared, signaling that an event of cosmic relevance was unfolding, and the resolution of the obstacles was near. As Tony Stark was forced to retire from the battle because of damages received on his rebuilt armor, Daredevil and Silver Surfer took his place on the battlefield. The presence of Silver Surfer, claiming his victory in name of Ms Marvel and the Kree, was enough to give the assembled heroes back their resolve. The Punisher slayed several Super-Skrulls before hitting a clear shot on Queen Veranke.
Queen Veranke was revealed to be alive and as the heroes went to attack her, Norman Osborn blew her head off. This event was seen around the world. All super-humans with the power of flight took out what was left of the Skrull armada and Tony Stark, who had returned from Stark tower after donning his original Iron Man suit that he had first constructed many years ago after being captured by terrorists, found the ship containing the heroes and humans that had been replaced. It was later established that the Skrulls needed the original abductees alive because they were the original source material for the Skrulls genetic disguises. Iron Man rejoined Hulk and Deadpool, only to find that the deep-seeded resentment from previous conflicts was still inherent; the blame for the Invasion was placed squarely upon the shoulders of Tony Stark. A Skrull revealed to Daredevil that taking over the Earth was the last chance they had since all their planets had been destroyed. By order of the President, S.H.I.E.L.D. was shut down and anything included in S.H.I.E.L.D., including all Stark Tech, was replaced with Oscorp technologies. Meanwhile, the Skrull-Maria Hill disappeared with Franklin Richards, leaving Reed and Susan desperate. At the end of the film the Dark Illuminati group appears in charge, consisting of Norman Osborn, Doctor Doom, Loki, Emma Frost, Namor, and Wilson Fisk.
There are some couples that I loved to see them together, but since they're not they won't be on this list...
Submariner then contacts Sharon Carter at SHIELD who uses top-secret technology to discover that Kang has taken to them to a hidden base located in a pyramid in Egypt. Using a SHIELD jet that can time-travel using technology taken from Cable, Submariner has to fight off the Egyptian military to gain passage to the pyramid (one of Kang's former bases when he once acted as the pharaoh Rama-Tut).
Eventually, Submariner manages to find an entrance to the main control room where he overhears Kang planning on putting the unconscious male Fantastic Four into Macrobot shells to use as weapons to take over the world. Before Submariner can attack, he is stopped by Rama-Tut, Kang's past counterpart.
Hawkeye and his Kree ally Mantis have finished busting up some thieves when their attention is directed to the star shinning above the Baxter Building. Arriving there he finds out that the Fantastic Four are missing. Submariner and Rama-Tut arrive from the past and recruit them to help them stop Kang from starting World War 3.
They travel back to Egypt and battle against Reed, Ben, and Johnny who have been captured and put inside Macrobots by Kang. During the battle, Rama-Tut reflects on his past: How he is a future version of Kang who grew tired of the constant conquest and resumed his Rama-Tut guise and ruled ancient Egypt again as a just ruler. However, he decided to change his destiny and so was put into suspended animation by one of his medicine men to this point in history when his past self -- Kang -- would travel back in time seeking the Celestial Madonna.
Defeating the Macrobots and freeing the team, they make an attack on Kang, and when Kang and Rama-Tut meet face to face time goes wild, and Mantis is revealed to be the Celestial Madonna. During the fight between Kang and Rama-Tut, the Submariner jumps into the path of an energy weapon, sacrificing himself to save the others, and Kang and Rama-Tut are sent outside of time.
Following the climax of the battle, the Submariner dies and the team mourns the loss of their ally.
The Fantastic Four then take the body of the Submariner to Atlantis to be buried in the ruins.
Afterwards, the Fantastic Four and company are approached by Libra who reveals that Mantis' recent adventures in crimefighting were all predetermined in order to see if she was fit for the role of Celestial Madonna and if she wasn't, then Sue Storm would take her place. Libra summons various powerful strange celestial beings to attack the team as one final test to his daughter. They team up and take out the very powerful foes. After rescuing Sue, Reed confesses his true feelings for her despite their past break up and asks her to marry him, a proposal which she accepts.
They all meet up in Vietnam where Libra has also arrived to play his part in this drama and marry off both Mantis to her destined Cotati mate and Reed and Sue. However the ceremony is crashed by the arrival of Kang who has come in one last ditch effort to claim the Celestial Madonna for himself. Using temporal duplicates of himself, Kang clashes with the Fantastic Four, and using their powers the Fantastic Four help fake Mantis's death, which causes a frustrated Kang to leave.
With Kang thwarted, Libra marries off both couples and Mantis and the Cotati being change in to energy forms and leave Earth to be among the stars and find their destiny together.
He immediately vowed vengeance on the surface world and attacked it, using the giant sea monster Giganto. The Fantastic Four were able to stop the Sub-Mariner. During the fight, he became instantly enamored of Sue Storm, and offered to make her his bride, and after that, his queen, due to the fact that he was attacking the city and she was dating Reed Richards, she declined.
After the fight the Sub-Mariner escapes and the Fantastic Four are summoned by Agent Carter of SHIELD with a dangerous mission. She explains that a genius scientist and sorcerer named Victor von Doom has overthrown the Latverian government and proclaimed himself as king and is now preparing an attack on America. Since supernatural forces are involved, they have called in Earth's heroes to stop him.
Reed, Sue, and Ben recall that they have a history with Doom, who was their professor in college while they attended and Reed Richards' mentor who taught him everything he knows.
Reed recalls that Doom had become obsessed with developing a machine that could project the astral form of a being into other dimensions, seeing it as a way to bring his deceased mother back from the dead. Reed pointed out a flaw in Doom's calculations, but Doom arrogantly ignored his warnings, feeling Reed was trying to upstage him. The machine exploded, scarring Doom's face. He was soon forced to resign from his position at the university for conducting unethical experiments. From then on, he blamed Reed Richards for the destruction of his face as well as his expulsion.
Sharon explained that he now wears a metal mask and vows vengeance on the world. His whereabouts are unknown and she tasks the team with finding him and bringing him to justice due to their roots to the professor. They all agree.
After scouting for Dr. Doom, the Human Torch returns to the Fantastic Four's Baxter Building headquarters to report in his lack of success in finding Doom. He arrives just as his teammates are reading fan mail. When Reed gets a letter from a fan who is presently staying at a nearby hospital, Reed stretches out his body to pay the boy a personal visit. Ben meanwhile gets a mocking letter from the Yancy Street Gang, challenging him to a fight. Ben responds by rolling up a titanium steel tile and telling Johnny to mail it out for him.
At that very moment Dr. Doom is encounters an angered and defeated Sub-Mariner. Doom managed to talk truce and convince Namor that they should work together to destroy the Fantastic Four and then rule the world. Namor invites Doom back to the ruins of Atlantis where Doom notes an infatuation with former student Sue Storm. Doom however stirs the Sub-Mariner's anger by reminding him how his kingdom was annihilated by atomic weapons tests. Namor agrees to destroy the Fantastic Four, but refuses to harm Sue Storm. Doom agrees to let Sue live and then shows off his latest invention which he wishes to use against the Fantastic Four, and to help open the gate for Latverian forces to enter America, a magnetically powered "grabber" device that can pull any object no matter how heavy. Namor then goes to the surface world to confront the Fantastic Four once again as part of their plan.
Meanwhile at the Baxter Building, Johnny finds dozens of photographs of Namor from WWII saved onto Sue's harddrive. He confronts his sister Sue about it. When she tells Johnny that he has no right to go snooping into her property, Johnny alerts the others about Sue's little secret before burning her computer with his flame powers. When Reed asks for an explanation from Sue, she is at a loss of words to explain her infatuation with the Sub-Mariner. Suddenly, Namor makes his presence known to them. While the male members of the team try to attack Namor, Sue comes to his aid. The others find that Namor is prepared for their attacks and Reed suddenly realizes that Namor must have planted some kind of trap and he and Johnny go to search for it. When they fail to find it Namor gloats when suddenly the Baxter Building is pulled out of its foundation and is drawn into space.
The Fantastic Four and Namor quickly put on breathing helmets. When Johnny fails to escape in the vacuum of space, Reed tries to grab Doom's ship that is pulling them closer to the sun, but Doom had prepared a defensive rocket that burns Reeds hands. With the void of space being close to that of Earth's oceans, Namor -- realizing he had been betrayed by Doom -- agrees to stop him. He then exits the Baxter Building and "swims" toward Doom's ship. There he breaks through the hull into the ship but finds a locked and electrified door blocking his way into the control room. The Sub-Mariner then uses his ability to mimic the electricity generating abilities of electric eels to begin shocking Doom through the door, forcing him to retreat on an escape pod. Namor then takes control of the ship and reverses its course, returning the Baxter Building to its original foundation. The Fantastic Four then find Doom's grabber device stashed away in the basement, but they cannot remove it. Suddenly it flies away and rendezvous with Namor over the ocean. The Sub-Mariner then crashes the ship and the grabber device into the waters below so they cannot be used again. When the Fantastic Four and their new ally arrive back in the city they realize that the fight in space was merely a distraction and that Latverian troops and Doombots have already begun a major attack on the city. The team teams up with Agent Carter and SHIELD in an epic battle against Doom and Latverian forces. Reed, Sue, and the Sub-Mariner eventually separate from Ben and Johnny and track Doom down to the Triskelion in Washington DC where he has hacked into the main frame and is planning to launch missles into several of the major cities throughout the country. He cites his hatred for Reed Richards which causes him to become distracted and the two become engulfed in a vicious one on one fight. While they are distracted, Sue and Namor go invisible and attempt to decode the missle launch sequence. They succeed last minute and Namor destroys the central computer so that Doom can not attempt this again. Namor and Sue share a passionate kiss, just as Reed delivers a finishing punch to Doom. Reed looks onwards in shock. The three heroes attempt to bring Doom to Agent Carter but are frozen by his magic and realizing that his plan to destroy the major cities of the US has failed, he retreats with his forces back to Latveria, just as Johnny, Ben, and SHIELD seemed to be losing the battle. Before leaving Doom swears vengeance on Reed, who apologizes for any harm he caused him and wishes they could be friends again. Namor and Sue then agree that they can not be together because there is still so much that he has to do to recover Atlantis. They share a sorrowful goodbye and Namor then returns to the ocean himself. Sue attempts to cry on Reed's shoulder but he just looks at her and walks away, being followed shortly by Ben and is left to be consoled by her brother Johnny.
In the very end after Sub-Mariner returns to the ruins of Atlantis he encounters his cousin, Nita, who is staring at the ruins with horror and sadness.
Because they blew a covert SHIELD Operation, The Fantastic Four must now travel to a secret AIM submarine in the ocean in order to save Agent 13, who was posing as a double agent attempting to earn the trust of AIM. However, due to their inability to fully control their new powers they are easily detected and captured. When they are revived, Sue Storm manages to finally master her invisibility to escape and she uses a device to free her teammates instead. Fighting off the AIM soldiers the four and Agent Carter rush to find Captain America's shield for Sharon, which AIM has stolen to find out it's composition. AIM's mysterious leader, Modok, orders the five heroes to be killed after they managed to get Cap's shield back. During the fight, Mr. Fantastic is hit from behind from a paralyzer ray, and so Agent-13 allows herself to be captured telling them that SHIELD knows about Modok. AIM then sends Agent-13 down to Modok, while they find Mr Fantastic's immobilized body and prepare to execute him.
Having escaped due to Sue's invisibility, Ben and Johnny decide to head off battling AIM soldiers to rescue their two comrades while Sue uses her abilities to sneak into the deeper sections of AIM to learn the truth about their mysterious leader.
While attempting to save Agent-13 from AIM, Mr. Fantastic has been hit with a paralyzer ray, and while Agent-13 is being brought to AIM's leader, the mysterious Modok, Mr. Fantastic is about to be executed. However, when the execution is interrupted by Johnny and Ben who storm in fighting, the execution is called off by MODOK. Dozens more agents arrive under orders to take all four people directly to MODOK himself.
Now, free from paralysis and face to face with MODOK -- a being with a giant head on a powerful hover chair -- The Fantastic three and Agent Carter finds themselves in a battle against this being who can fire powerful mind bolts.
Meanwhile, Sue accesses the AIM computer to learn more about MODOK. She learns that MODOK was once a man named George Tarleton. Scientists at Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM) created M.O.D.O.K. several years ago to analyze and probe the cosmic cube and to improve the organization's productivity in its scientific endeavors, while still being subservient to the higher echelons of the organization. To that end they mutagenically altered one of their technicians of average intelligence, George Tarleton, into the super intelligent being, MODOC (Mental Organism Designed Only for Computing). These scientists unwisely did not take into consideration the theory that superior ability naturally leads to superior ambition.
It did not take long for M.O.D.O.C. to turn on his former masters and overthrow AIM. He adopted the new acronym for his title: M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) at this time as he was more of a ruthless killer than a bean counter in his own estimation.
AIM was not happy with M.O.D.O.K.'s megalomaniacal and short-sighted leadership and he was frequently ousted only to return to power again. She learns now that AIM has set a secret execution order against the being.
Just after learning this some renegade AIM soldiers enter the room, using distraction of the fight between MODOK and the Fantastic Four as a distraction to fire ruthlessly at him. This seemingly incapacitates MODOK. The soldiers then arrive from all corners to turn on Sue and her teammates, attempting to murder them but they fail horribly.
The Fantastic Four and Agent-13 then force themselves on board an escape ship just as MODOK -- with his last ounce of strength -- uses his mental powers to set off a detonator which causes the entire base to explode. Just managing to escape, The Fantastic Four forces the AIM soldiers to surrender and turn themselves over to SHIELD. Agent Carter explains that her boyfriend will be happy to get his shield back (suggesting that a relationship has since started between herself and Captain America since the events of Winter Soldier)
Their first mission is a success and they decide to work independently of SHIELD for some time, saving people everywhere and gaining public fame in doing so.
It is not long before at a science convention the Fantastic Four learn that AIM presence is strong when they operate a terrorist threat against the team, causing several large explosions during one of their speeches. The team investigates to learn that MODOK had not only survived the attack on the space station, but had come to earth and rallied many additional AIM employees to serve him. The team reconvenes with Agent 13, who tells them that AIM has been spotted in large amounts near Shanghai, China just following the Fantastic Four's destruction of their space station.
With this, the Fantastic Four is sent to China with Agent Carter. Upon investigating, they find AIM associates exploring an underground tomb in possession of a magical dragon artifact.
The AIM agents activate the powers of the artifact and a giant dragon-like alien beast named Fin Fang Foom awakens in a destructive rage with goals of conquering the planet and harvesting its resources for himself.
MODOK attempts to use his intelligence to convince Foom to destroy the Fantastic Four and spare the rest of earth by telling him that they and SHIELD are the leaders of the world. This causes Fin Fang Foom to fly to Washington DC where the SHIELD headquarters are and orchestrate a Godzilla-like attack on the nation's capitol.
The Fantastic Four dukes it out briefly with MODOK and his men before the leader once again escapes. Agent Carter then suggests that he is most likely following Fin Fang Foom to SHIELD headquarters to ensure the success of his mission and the team makes haste back to Washington.
Here they find Foom under attack of the city and the team is quickly defeated by this being of near infinite strength. However, when Agent Carter reveals to Foom that he had been tricked by MODOK and that there was no one ruler of the world but a combination of many powers, Foom is angered and begins to attack MODOK and his AIM agents, who are watching from a distance. Now in peril of the destruction of not only themselves but the entire world, MODOK must team up with the Fantastic Four to defeat the monster. Through their combined scientific knowledge, he and Mr Fantastic are able to create a device which , when dropped inside Fin Fang Foom's body would force him to implode, thus evading the destruction upon the capitol that would be caused by an explosion.
The Fantastic Four works dilligently to get the device into the creature's mouth and he implodes, causing the entire city to cheer for the Fantastic Four, and MODOK is arrested by Agent Carter. However, in the end we see that Fin Fang Foom's spirit still resides in the small dragon statue which is glowing and we see it in possession of HYDRA.

The Superhuman Registration Act had been a long time in the making. The logical extension of the often-proposed, never-passed Mutant Registration Act, the Superhuman Registration Act arose following the Hulk's destructive rampages in Las Vegas, which killed 26 adults, 2 children, and a dog (unbeknownst to the general public, S.H.I.E.L.D. subsequently deceived the Hulk and jettisoned him into space following this incident).
Following M-Day, 90% of the Earth's mutant population found itself spontaneously depowered. With the mutant population suddenly far less visible and extremist groups claiming the event marked a turn in the tide of growing mutantdom (if not divine punishment against all mutants), sympathy for the group was near an all-time low. The majority of the remaining mutants—estimated at 198—were gathered up and forced to relocate to the Xavier Institute for their own protection. These events put public support for the registration bill at around 50%.
Tony Stark (Iron Man) was among those working to prevent passage of the act. He even arranged for War Machine to attack him immediately after his testimony before the Commission on Superhuman Activities, hoping it would hammer home that the act would make the nation less capable of dealing with rogue or foreign superhuman threats. The anti-registration camp seemed to be making headway, and may have even defeated the bill by the narrowest of margins, if not for the events that took place in Stamford, Connecticut.
Villains Nitro, Cobalt Man, Speedfreak, and Coldheart had been holed up in a house in Stamford when the Guardians of the Galaxy located them. At this time, the Guardians were being filmed for a new television documentary. When Gamora attempted to capture Nitro, he used his explosive powers and destroyed several city blocks, including the elementary school at the epicenter. All of the Guardians, the three villains accompanying Nitro, and over 600 civilians, among them 60 children, were killed. Numerous members of the superhero community arrived on the scene to search for survivors.
Public sentiment towards superheroes plummeted. The inactive Guardians of the Galaxy were widely regarded as "baby killers" by association. Wendell Vaughn/Quasar, an ally of the Guardians currently living on Earth, desperate to distance himself from them, began releasing many heroes' secret identities, and almost as many were killed by lynching as by the explosion in Stamford. The Human Torch (Johnny Storm) was beaten into a coma outside a Manhattan nightclub. Public opinion had been lukewarm for the Superhuman Registration Act before; now it passed the tipping point. Although nominally a UN agency, SHIELD seemed to have assumed the brunt of enforcing the act under acting director Maria Hill.
Captain America (Steve Rogers) balked at leading a force to apprehend rogue heroes. He felt that heroes needed to be above direct government control, because when politicians could control the heroes, they could decide who the villains were. He escaped the SHIELD Heli-Carrier and began organizing other anti-registration heroes into a group the press dubbed the "Secret Avengers." Most of his core group—Captain America, Wolverine, Falcon, and Cable—had to take on a series of identities to avoid capture, literally becoming outlaws. The Secret Avengers apprehended a number of criminals while evading the opposing heroes and the new SHIELD "capekiller" units. Other heroes joined them or were liberated after their arrests.
Iron Man, on the other hand, felt that it was reasonable that heroes have proper training and oversight, that the casual self-policing the superhero community had enjoyed until now was insufficient, and (most importantly) that it was now impossible to resist this change in the political landscape. He gathered his own pro-registration heroes to bring in Captain America's group and other non-registered combatants. Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), with the help of Ant-Man (Henry Pym) and Tony Stark, began work on designing a prison (nicknamed 42 because it was the forty-second idea on Tony's list of ways to improve the world) to detain superpowered violators.
Most of the pro-registration heroes, such as Mister Fantastic, She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters) and Ms Marvel (Carol Danvers), already had highly public identities. Even Stark unmasked himself as Iron Man (for the second time in his career), and admitted to previous attempts to hide his identity. One supporter, however, was not yet public: Spider-Man was reluctant to reveal his identity. He prepared to liquidate his assets and flee the country with Mary Jane and Aunt May to avoid revealing his identity and putting them in jeopardy. They, on the other hand, were supportive and felt it was time for Peter to finally get some recognition for his good work. During a live, nationally televised broadcast, he pulled off his mask and announced, "My name is Peter Parker, and I've been Spider-Man since I was fifteen years old."
The X-Men, on behalf of the mutant community, declared neutrality in the growing conflict. Professor Xavier felt that the mutants had already been through too much during the Decimation to take a stand either way and survive. Individuals within the X-Men had their own opinions on the matter, however. Wolverine felt that the act was every bit as racist and oppressive as the Mutant Registration Act, while Bishop felt it was necessary to embrace the act and make sure that mutants could continue to self-police, lest the truly oppressive regime of his home timeline should come to pass. As the last known mutants, all members of the 198 and X-Men were already in government databases and were registered by default when the act passed.
The 198 have since chafed at the constant O*N*E surveillance, as well as their inability to leave the school grounds without being tracked by monitoring chips. When it was discovered the chips could also deliver a powerful electric discharge to assure the 198 could be subdued, they rioted. Shadowcat used her powers to remove the chips and they left the mansion. Bishop was given orders from the government to apprehend these rioting mutants, threatening to shatter Xavier's neutrality. During the incident, General Thunderbolt Ross' thinly veiled anti-mutant sentiments and his covert attempts to destroy them were uncovered. His neck was snapped by Mystique (while she was in disguise as the General himself to take his identity) and the mutants and heroes rallied together to prevent disaster. The more sympathetic director of O*N*E, Val Cooper, now seems to have a free hand with regards to the mutant refugees.
The X-Men and the 198 were not the only voices of the mutant community, however. The now mostly-depowered Brotherhood of Mutants and other individual former humans remained easy targets for hate groups now that they had reverted to more-or-less normal humans. Magneto eventually created a small community he dubbed "Mutant Town" for both the 198 and the depowered alike. He called a press conference to inform everyone that Mutant Town was now officially off-limits. From now on, they would protect its residents, and the capekillers' presence would not be tolerated.
Into this chaotic scene comes Pietro Maximoff. The man once known as Quicksilver had lost his speed powers during the Decimation event, but had gained new powers by inhaling a mysterious fog known as the Terrigen Mists. He now has the ability to restore lost powers to former mutants, though doing so usually ended badly for the recipient of his "gift". He has also set up shop in Mutant Town, though the full extent of his activities has not yet been revealed.
Meanwhile, Wolverine had begun tracking down Nitro the moment rescue efforts ceased. He was able to track Nitro's scent and determine he had skipped town hidden on a pick-up. Interrogating the driver, Wolverine then found Nitro hiding in a cabin in the woods. By this time SHIELD had also intervened, and a team including Wolverine was sent to capture him. Predictably, he incinerated everything within a wide radius of the cabin. The agents died, and Wolverine was reduced to (seemingly) nothing more than an adamantium-plated skeleton. It was while he was regenerating that he heard Nitro talking to a contact over the phone, informing him of the latest kill. The conversation went sour: Nitro's use of Mutant Growth Hormone to enhance his power was mentioned, as was the fact that he was now officially too hot to be useful. Finally regenerated, Wolverine went toe-to-toe with Nitro, taking advantage of the small radius of safety around his body that prevents Nitro from incinerating himself or anything on his person.
The fight was interrupted by a trio of Atlanteans before Wolverine could kill Nitro. The Atlanteans sought to bring Nitro back to Atlantis, where he was wanted by Prince Namor for the murder of his cousin. Wolverine fought with them, then joined them to go to Atlantis to confront Namor personally. During the course of debate over what to do with Nitro, the villain freed himself and tried to take an Atlantean woman hostage. Wolverine subdued him, cutting off his hand in the process. He then decided to leave Nitro to Atlantean justice, and focus instead on the ones who supplied him with MGH. He eventually determined the distributor was the corrupt head of Damage Control, a firm that took clean-up and rebuilding contracts following superhuman fights. It didn't take much detective work to determine that more powerful villains meant bigger fights, and bigger contracts.
Meanwhile the government recognized that a war between superheroes left the country defenseless against the remaining super-villains. Their fears are well-placed: villains such as the nefarious Doctor Doom have shown that they have plans in the works. A sub-group of SHIELD led by Agent Coulson was asked to spearhead Operation: Justice Like Lightning, in which they would confront, capture, and if possible reform super-villains. Little did anyone outside the group suspect that Doctor Doom had already been collecting super-villains for an army to confront the mounting threat of the government! The captured villains willing to play along quickly swelled the team into three large squads. Still more are being trained every day in a secret mountain camp. Numerous other villains have been released since then under more direct (or less legitimate) government supervision, including the Goblin. The villains are supposedly kept in check by nanites in their blood stream which can monitor and disable them at any time. Harry Osborn, however, has learned the secret to deactivating them from a mysterious benefactor.
Most villains sought to bypass the act. Mystique allowed some supervillains to escape the act by grafting her tissue into their bodies. The few criminals who survived this experiment were shown to have gained shape-shifting abilities, making registration easy to avoid. Hammerhead, on the other hand, saw the act as an opportunity to usurp Wilson Fisk as the Kingpin of Crime by rallying criminals in opposition of the act. His reasoning was that it was only a matter of time before every super-being was treated as a walking WMD, and then the criminals among them were as good as dead. A number of super-criminals did in fact rally under him, but the Kingpin managed to orchestrate the capture and death of Hammerhead from his jail cell. He deceived Tony Stark and SHIELD into believing they were raiding Captain America's secret headquarters, while his double agent under Hammerhead, Bullseye, made sure the usurper did not survive.
Conflict among the heroes was constant, with the government-backed heroes tracking down unregistered super-humans (and subsequently arresting or registering them) and trying to find Captain America's Secret Avengers. The Secret Avengers operated out of a series of secret safe houses set up by Nick Fury, kept secret from everyone within SHIELD. Cap's team continued to apprehend super-villains (usually leaving them bound for the authorities), and launched a series of well-coordinated attacks on prison transports carrying unregistered super humans. During one such raid, the convoy was diverted when Iron Man became aware of Cap's plan, and ended up going directly down Yancy Street, a hotbed of civilian opposition to the Act. The Thing, who was only visiting his old neighborhood, got roped into crowd control. When a young member of the Yancy Street Gang named Cee died in the riot, Grimm became so disgusted with both sides that he left the country for France (As a patriotic American he could not act against the law, but as he felt the law was wrong, he could not support it either). Incidentally, the US government made it very difficult for Grimm to get out of the country. His assets were frozen (too much money to risk going untaxed), his baggage was held up (even shampoo could be a potential bomb), and he was lucky to board before he was added to the national "no-fly" list. He has currently taken up with the Heroes of Paris.
In New York, Scarlet Witch sees the riots on television suffers a trauma seizure. Despite Captain America's veto of the plan, some of the Secret Avengers stop the government and superhuman violence involved in the riot. After a brief fight, all of the heroes are attacked by the Silver Surfer, who was sent by SHIELD to take them down. Silver Surfer breaks a young hero's neck during the fight. During the fight, the Shadowcat phase-shifted her hand into Silver Surfer's chest, who broke it off to escape. In pain, she is luckily able to rebuild her hand using Mystique's DNA later. The remaining heroes broke into a SHIELD facility and saved their teammates, freeing Silver Surfer from a mind-control device in place.
Recently, the Secret Avengers were lured by a false emergency call into an ambush by the pro-registration forces. They first attempted to disable Cap and his team with sonics, but as the battle began to turn decided to unleash the secretive Project Lightning: Thor. After the fight, it was soon revealed that this was not the true Thor, but a clone created from a few strands of Thor's hair using Kree technology. When the true Thor returned to Earth to assist, it gave everyone pause, but the battle soon raged on. When attacked by Agent Coulson under orders from SHIELD, Thor sent a bolt of lightning through the man's chest, killing him. With both sides in shock, Cap ordered a retreat. Agent Coulson's tragic death dramatically changed the way both sides looked at the conflict, and turned it into a true Civil War. The event shook up both sides in the war, with Daredevil and Black Cat finally surrendering and registering, while the Black Widow and Hawkeye, long-time agents of SHIELD decided to oppose the act's enforcement with Captain America.
The pro-registration side suffered another blow when Spider-Man became curious about many of the details of enforcement. He came to realize that Stark was using an "Iron Spidey" suit created for him to monitor his actions and reactions, including his spider-sense. He found and added override codes for a number of Stark commands designed to subdue the wall-crawler if necessary. At one point, he accompanied Stark on a visit to the Fantastic Four's lab after Sue and Johnny eventually left to join the Secret Avengers. He learned that many of the most powerful captured super-humans were being held without trial and without access to counsel in an enormous super-prison within the life-draining Negative Zone. Spider-Man rebelled against the act, and was attacked by Iron Man when he tried to sneak away with Aunt May and Mary Jane. During the fight the three escaped, and Ghost Rider and Mysterio were sent to capture him. Already weak, he was found, drugged, and shot half to death by Mysterio. He was saved at the last minute by the Punisher, who brought him to Captain America. Castle revealed he hadn't cared much about the superhero's little war until the government started using killers like Bullseye and Sandman. Now he was determined to take down the scum, anyone supporting them, and anyone in his way. The Secret Avengers knew the Punisher's skills were exactly what they needed to wage their guerrilla war, but also that accepting the convicted killer into their ranks destroyed almost all of their legitimacy and moral high-ground. Later, Spider-Man would interrupt a news cast to make a public statement about the horrors of the act's enforcement, and pledged to fight it.
Following the incident, the US government tried to discredit Cable, who was seen as a risk even before he allied himself with the anti-registration camp. Cable opposes the registration act because he sees it as the first step towards government-sponsored superteams, then towards a super-powered police force that will ultimately lead to a global police state. Like Bishop, his concern for the future is driven by a knowledge of his timeline's past. For the past few years, Cable had been promoting peace, cooperation, and advance technology. When Cable recently participated in the enormous mass-riot that ended Coulson's life, many in the greater world became convinced the would-be mutant messiah was a threat to international stability.
An ambassador from the kingdom of Atlantis, on a mission of peace backed by the European Community (represented at the event by the Super Heroes of Europe), was the target of an unsuccessful assassination attempt. Harry Osborn, bearing an obviously fake press pass and handgun (and none of his Goblin paraphernalia), fired once at the statesman, hitting him the shoulder. The ambassador was escorted back to the ocean by his people, and Osborn immediately collapsed to the ground claiming he was framed. Police later recognized that an accomplished menace like Osborn could have easily killed the ambassador, and that the events leading up to the shooting just did not make sense. Osborn attempted to tell police that his actions were being controlled by a third party through the nanites, but was unable. He was turned over to the federal government before NYPD could learn much. Following the attack, Atlantis has massed their troops and vessels along the United States' east coast, as if preparing to attack (though they have not yet done so).
It should also be noted that the visit by the Super Heroes of Europe underscored the fact that no one has really decided how the act applies to foreign superheroes, though several super-villains of foreign origin are already being held based on previous convictions. Though not involved in the Civil War directly, relations with Wakanda and its super-powered monarchs, the Black Panther (T'Challa) and Storm, have also been strained lately. It now seems inevitable that the Civil War will spill out of the US' borders.
Public interest peaked when Speedfreak was found alive, hurled a state away by the force of the Stamford blast. He seemed to have lost his powers in the blast (the explanation being that his powers protected him from the sudden force, but burned out their biological mechanisms in the process). He was held without trial in a foreign country for a time, but was eventually relocated and given counsel in the form of lawyer Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk), who attempted to argue he was unconscious when the act was passed, and thus never had the chance to register. Instead of following her advice, he refused to register. Having no more powers, he was put in the prison's general populace, where he was regarded by the rest of the prisoners as a "baby killer" and beaten regularly. Hoping to set an example for those who would attack him, he challenged the meanest detractor to a boxing match. He was in the middle of getting pummeled in the ring when his powers kicked in, destroying the ring and knocking out everyone in the near vicinity. He was again put in solitary, where he learned his parents never wanted to see him again. He jumped at the chance to testify before Congress on the Stamford incident, but was shot as he was being escorted to chambers. As he was bleeding to death in the ambulance, his powers again activated with enough force to hurt even She-Hulk. He was mended through Reed Richards quick action, but returned to prison once better. This time imprisoned at the Raft super-prison, he was used as the focus of an escape opportunity by a group of young unknown superhumans. They distracted the guards long enough to take Baldwin hostage, then killed the guards while one of them opened the gates. With Baldwin being used as a human shield, he was again able to activate his powers, this time intentionally, burning many of the escapees beyond recognition. Having seemingly undergone a major and spontaneous and violent personality change, he is now anxious to register and get back out into the world.
Trying to navigate this entire sordid affair are reporters Sally Floyd and Ben Urich. Sally started out as one of the most vocal opponents of the act in the press, immediately decrying it as violation of civil liberties. Her opinion was not altered much by SHIELD's constant surveillance, nor her recent arrest after she attended a meeting of unregistered heroes. However, after she was bailed out by Senator Sykes, one of the authors of the registration act and a frequent target of her opinion pieces, she began to realize that he too was concerned with American civil liberties, and that she hadn't given the issue the full consideration expected of a good reporter. After a disappointing interview with Captain America, Sally now finds her self more conflicted than ever. Ben Urich, on the other hand, had been mostly quiet on the act itself, but had slowly been cataloging inconsistencies as he researches fires, murders, and attacks on himself. He wondered if Harry Osborn was really being monitored, who attacked him dressed as the Goblin, why would the Goblin attack a group of Atlanteans, and what were the Atlanteans doing hiding in a New York warehouse. From the shooting of Robbie Baldwin to the shooting of the Atlantean ambassador, the more evidence he gathered, the more the missing pieces spoke of a conspiracy.
As the Punisher worked his way through the Baxter Building to retrieve plans for File 42, Sue Storm went to Atlantis to persuade Namor to join the Secret Avengers, but to no avail. The super-villains Coldheart and Cobalt Man arrived at the Secret Avengers' base to join Captain America's team, but the Punisher immediately killed them, calling them killers and thieves after their deaths, leading Captain America to attack him and kick him out of the group once he did not raise a finger against him. The Secret Avengers, joined by Storm and the Black Panther, reach the Ryker's Island penitentiary and head through the portal to the 42 complex, but the team is confronted by the pro-registration supporters, revealing each team had placed a spy on the other. Mystique is able to release the incarcerated heroes from the cells of the 42 complex through the guise of Henry Pym, making the odds more even. As the battle is about to commence, Captain America warns the pro-registration heroes: "Now close your eyes, gentlemen. This might hurt."
As the battle begins in the Negative Zone, Nightcrawler moves the battle to the center of New York City. Namor and an army of Atlanteans join the battle alongside the Secret Avengers, followed by the Thor clone and Ms Marvel on the pro-registration side. Shadowcat uses her powers to disrupt Iron Man's armor and Captain America is able to subdue him. On the battlefield, Mr. Fantastic is shot while trying to save the Invisible Woman from a bullet shot from Maria Hill and Hulk crushes the skull of the Thor clone. As the battle rages on, the city is badly damaged. Thing returns to protect the citizens from harm of the battle. Captain America's side seems victorious as Iron Man lays on the ground waiting for Cap's finishing blow. Just before Cap can hit Iron Man, several standard cops, EMTs, and firefighters hold him back, and Cap realizes how much damage the fighting has caused to the general population that they all want to protect. Wishing to avert anymore unnecessary bloodshed, Cap surrenders and the team follows suit, with many of the Secret Avengers given amnesty by the government while Captain America is placed in jail.
Two weeks later, the 50-State Initiative is launched and the Avengers assemble once again as a team. Tony Stark is appointed Director of SHIELD, while Maria Hill is demoted to deputy status. Some heroes choose to move to Canada, while some stay underground. In front of his Avengers teammate Doctor Strange, Spider-Man sorrowfully dons his black costume. At the end of the series, Tony Stark tells Pepper Potts "the best is yet to come sweetheart... That's a promise".
While living as a hermit in Alaska, Bruce Banner is contacted by Nick Fury to help S.H.I.E.L.D. in destroying a rogue space weapon called the Godseye which could detonate all the nuclear bombs in the world. The Hulk is convinced that he is the only being who can save the Earth from a rogue satellite. SHIELD, with the cooperation of other heroes, then launch Hulk into space to confront the problem, only to leave him stranded, hurtling towards a world uninhabited by sentient life (where he will have no one to hurt). Due to a navigation systems malfunction and a spatial wormhole, the Hulk finds himself on a strange new world of Sakaar controlled by the Red King. Hulk is surprised when the King's guards can hurt him (as the wormhole weakens all who pass through). The Hulk is then drafted as a gladiator for the King's amusement. The Hulk unites with other gladiators to form the group known as the Warbound, united until death. They then lead a series of battles against the Red King and his imperials, eventually overthrowing him. The Hulk then becomes the king of Sakaar, and rules the planet until the spaceship he arrived in explodes, killing thousands, after just three days of the Hulk's rule. The Hulk reunites with the Warbound and they leave the shattered planet of Sakaar for Earth.
Meanwhile on earth, Bruce's cousin Jen struggles to find her place after she earns abilities from a blood transfusion and struggles from attacks by a notorious villain known as The Leader and a team of heroes known as the Illuminati, responsible for Hulk's abandonment.
