Bella Thorne Series from ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Creator Gets ABC Family Pilot Order

ABC Family, which will officially be renamed Freeform in January 2016, is staying in business with Marlene King.

The “Pretty Little Liars” creator just received a formal pilot order for drama series “Famous In Love,” which has a star attached in Bella Thorne, Variety has confirmed.

Based on Rebecca Serle’s romantic novel of the same name, “Famous In Love” follows an ordinary college student Paige (Thorne) who gets her big break after auditioning for the starring role in a Hollywood blockbuster. Thrown into fame, Paige must now navigate her new star-studded life and undeniable chemistry with her two co-leads, while uncovering the truth about what happened to a famous missing popstar.

“We could not be more excited to extend our relationship with hitmaker I. Marlene King,” said Karey Burke, exec vice president of programming and development for the cabler. “With ‘Famous In Love,’ Marlene takes us behind the scenes of young Hollywood to tell a sexy, soapy tale about what it’s like to make a movie — and fall in love — in LA. Serle and King co-penned the project, which was put into development this spring. The author will serve as a co-exec producer on the series, which hails from Warner Horizon Television, the studio that produces “Pretty Little Liars.” Miguel Arteta (“Getting On”) is set to direct the pilot and will also exec producer with King and Dan Farah (MTV’s “The Shannara Chronicles”). Long Lake Media, Farah Films and Carmina Productions, Inc. will also produce.

“Famous In Love” marks King’s second book-to-television adaptation for the young-skewing cable net, following “Pretty Little Liars,” which is based on Sara Shepard’s books.

A huge hit for ABC Family, “Liars” is on hiatus in the midst of its sixth season and has a seventh on the way, as the teen thriller received a double-renewal, after ranking as a social media record-breaking show. King also created the short-lived “PLL” spinoff “Ravenswood.”

Thorne, who rose to fame on Disney Channel’s “Shake It Up,” alongside starlet Zendaya, recently appeared in MTV’s “Scream” and starred in feature film “The Duff.”
