Disney's Zootopia dominated once again this weekend, bringing in an estimated $50 million in its sophomore session, pushing the film over $140 million domestically in its first ten days of release. Leading the weekend's four new wide releases is 10 Cloverfield Lane with a strong opening weekend performance while The Perfect Match, The Young Messiah and The Brothers Grimsby settled in slots six through eight in the weekend top ten. Dropping only 33.4%, Zootopia is the #1 film for the second weekend in a row as its domestic cume has now climbed to $142.6 million. Internationally the animated feature took in an additional $83.1 million, which is actually up 25% from last weekend. The jump is largely due to the estimated $56.5 million it brought in this weekend in China, an increase of a whopping 139% as its global cume now stands at $431.3 million. As far as the weekend's new releases are concerned, 10 Cloverfield Lane entered its opening weekend with incredibly strong reviews. »

“Zootopia” remains king of the box office jungle this weekend, having crossed $100 million in domestic receipts after taking in $12 million on Friday, according to studio estimates.

The animated animal romp with a message should generate a healthy three-day total around $50 million from 3,827 locations in its second frame. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman star.

In second place is Paramount thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, which took in $9 million on its opening day and ought to wrap up its first weekend with up to $23 million. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman star in the follow-up to 2008’s “Cloverfield,” which grossed $170 million worldwide. The film is benefiting from strong word of mouth; one Variety pundit suggests Goodman deserves Oscar attention for his turn.

Fox’s “Deadpool” and Focus/Gramercy’s “London Has Fallen” appear to be neck and neck for third place, with each expected to bring in about $10 million for the weekend after nabbing $3 million each on Friday. »

Paramount’s apocalyptic thriller “10 Cloverfield Lane” scared away the competition, opening to a solid $1.8 million at about 2,500 locations on Thursday night.

Sony’s spy spoof “The Brothers Grimsby” launched with a quiet $235,000 at Thursday showings. Focus Features’ faith-based “The Young Messiah” took in a moderate $475,000 at 1,300 locations in previews. Meanwhile, “The Perfect Match” scored $155,000 at 790 sites last night.

Disney’s second weekend of the animated comedy “Zootopia” will easily win the frame with at least $40 million following its impressive $75 million debut last weekend.

The launch for “10 Cloverfield Lane” is in the same neighborhood as 2011’s “Super 8,” which took in $1.5 million in previews and opened to a $35.5 million weekend, and 2014’s “Edge of Tomorrow” with $1.8 million in previews and a $28.8 million launch.

10 Cloverfield Lane is the latest mystery box thriller from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and it's looking to top a list of four new wide releases this weekend. Additional new releases include Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy The Brothers Grimsby, the new faith-based feature The Young Messiah and the romantic-comedy The Perfect Match. All four will be competing with some strong holdovers, most notably Disney's Zootopia, which will be holding on to the top spot for a second week in a row, and Deadpool, which could top $10 million in its fifth weekend in release. Zootopia enters its second weekend in release after breaking the The Lorax's March opening weekend record for an animated film. As such, it seems appropriate to use The Lorax's 44.7% second weekend drop as a basis for comparison this weekend. Though the film’s name “10 Cloverfield Lane” was revealed less than two months ago — even the cast was in the dark during filming — the movie’s unconventional and mysterious marketing campaign brought anticipation to a fever pitch at the film’s premiere in Manhattan on Wednesday evening.

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this follow-up to 2008’s “Cloverfield” (directed by Matt Reeves) is not a sequel, but it does exist in the same universe. Or as producer J.J. Abrams puts it, they’re two different rides at the same amusement park. For one, the first “Cloverfield” film was also produced by Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, and launched in a similarly tight-lipped manner.

Still, Abrams didn’t hesitate to hint at even more mystery to come, which could tie the “Cloverfield” universe together. “There is a bigger plan,” he told Variety. “It’s not just an anthology. There’s something that we’re working on. »
