Fuller House Review – Back To The Tanner Well?

11 March 2016 11:03 AM, PST

It’s been 20 years since the Tanners were on television, and Netflix‘ Fuller House is an effort that had a lot of people wondering if the world really wanted to revisit the family. The theory of the show has a lot going for it, but audiences need to see things through a very specific lens.

In a world with more sequels, reboots, and reimaginings than it needs, and with the popularity (or at least Roi) of several film trips to the 80s, it just isn’t that strange to take another ride with a popular show.

That said, it can’t go unmentioned that Fuller House isn’t a good show. It just isn’t. But, it isn’t a terrible show either, and you’ve got to remember that it isn’t a look back to a good show, so you need to accurately set your bar.

Full House wasn’t a good show, »

Speculation Abounds For Game Of Thrones Season 6

11 March 2016 7:34 AM, PST

There’s a little less than a month to go before the premiere of the sixth season of Game Of Thrones, and the rumor mill is swirling with speculation on the details of what’s in store. By the end of the fifth season, fans were left with more than a few questions about their favorite (or most hated) characters, and we have a few ideas of our own on what to expect in the latest return to Westeros.

While this is entirely guesswork and assumption, please bear in mind that this could potentially contain major spoilers for season 6 and will absolutely contain crucial spoilers for season 5. Consider yourselves warned. That being said, if you haven’t seen previous seasons, why are you reading this at all?

The most recent trailer raises just as many questions as it answers, but there’s still some pearls to be taken away for those paying close attention. »

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping Trailer Is Actually Boring, But The Movie Still Look Hilarious

10 March 2016 3:22 PM, PST

Andy Samberg is on a somewhat interesting winning streak for an SNL alum. Not is Brooklyn Nine-Nine a great show, but his movie efforts have largely been solid as well.

Now, teaming up with several comedians and Judd Apatow, Samberg is daring to take on the world of ludicrous, talentless popstars, which runs the risk of irritating certain demographics.

In Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Samberg plays Conner4Real, because of course, a singer who is living the new American dream – being rich and famous, basically for no reason.

His shows are wild spectacles of mindless… spectacle, and he has an entourage that would bankrupt a small nation. Apparently something along the lines of a mockumentary, the film showcases the crisis that ensues when Conner4Real’s second album bombs.

Oddly, the trailer isn’t exactly hilarious itself, spending most of its time making sure it gets all the co-stars on screen in the available time, »

Captain America: Civil War Trailer 2 Finally Reveals More “Heroes”

10 March 2016 10:46 AM, PST

I suppose everyone in Captain America: Civil War is supposed to be a hero, but now that the lines have been drawn and sides have been chosen… well, we can’t call them all heroes can we?

I mean, Scarlet Witch isn’t a superheroine… exactly.

Anyway, we finally get a bit more to explore, though the new trailer does give us a lot of the same footage as the first one. Even the stuff that we’ve seen already has a few more seconds to it, or is edited in a different way so that we get more continuity of the scene/conversation. Also, we see more destruction, though some of that is from previous films.

There’s also a bit more background to the story, at least in the sense that we can see that our heroes are being given a good talking to. On the downside of »

Mother’s Day Movie Releases Poster Ahead Of April 29th Release

10 March 2016 9:23 AM, PST

Mother’s Day is the latest Garry Marshall holiday vehicle that’s loaded with stars and intersecting characters/plots, and the film has finally released a poster.

This one has a gaggle of stars, just as you’d expect, and centers around two people, but their lives and families make for a wide branching out of the narrative.

We’re obviously centered on mothers and motherhood generally, and we’re going to get a mix of viewpoints. Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis are the hubs from which all things spin, and they give us the middle ground for the multi-generational look at how having, or being, a mother changes everything about the world… sort of.

The general idea may be getting a little overworked, but this one looks fun, and Valentine’s Day, while not great, was hard to hate and full of charm. Plus, the broad casts always mean »

Win A Sisters Blu-Ray Combo Pack!

10 March 2016 7:05 AM, PST

One of the worst things about the plethora of goofball comedies to hit theaters over the last decade, especially those that include SNL alumni, is that when something like Sisters comes along, it’s usually hard to differentiate it from the pack.

That makes it something of a surprise when it turns out to be really good, and it shouldn’t work that way.

Luckily, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have enough of a track record that most audiences are likely able to read between the lines of the less-than-stellar trailers. Or, they may just sell well enough that the trailers don’t matter.

Either way, easily one of the best comedies last year is headed home on March 15th, with a bit of an early window for the digital release, which is already available.

Here’s your chance to pick a copy for yourself. Just enter to win via the box below. »

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice Infographic Gives Everything You Need To Know

9 March 2016 10:49 AM, PST

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is just around the corner, and while the trailers and promos have finally revealed a fair amount of information, the whole concept of the film is somewhat elusive to those who aren’t (and aren’t interested in being) familiar with the comic world specific to this particular plotline.

Plus, there’s a little going on in this one, and why not have a handy cheat-sheet when it comes to putting everything in its place?

Worse, the whole thing seems to put Batman in a ridiculous position. Sure, Superman has managed to get himself into trouble worthy enough to keep a comic interesting for as long as he’s been around, but the old, “Hey, I found some Kryptonite,” gag gets old rather quick.

Besides, much as we can clearly get the general idea behind all the, “absolute power,” soundbites from the trailers… what’s Batman’s beef anyway? »

The Magicians Review – Syfy Stumbles Into Its Best Show Ever

9 March 2016 9:02 AM, PST

Lev Grossman’s novel, The Magicians, which is only about seven years old and already has two sequels, is something of a unique effort. It isn’t unique in that it is about a young man at a school of magic, but it is an uncommon attempt to mix Ya fiction (or, more or less Ya fiction), with high fantasy, with something like a pointed disregard for “standard narrative enticements.” It’s almost as though it is working a layered trick to get young audiences to believe that working through school will actually pay off.

Sure, our “hero” Quentin learns there is a school where he can go to learn real magic, but it’s filled with rules, learning magic is monotonous and requires countless hours of study, and the whole thing is likely to drive you mad with frustration. But, if you make it out the other side, you »

Haven Final Season Blu-Ray Hits April 19th Packed With Extras

9 March 2016 6:50 AM, PST

Haven managed something fairly rare in the world of television simply by being a show that was, more or less, serious about about completely goofball events without turning ridiculous.

It probably helped that it got to say Stephen King’s name a lot, but no outside pull gets you very far when you have to put “The Troubles” on screen, and sell a world in which a small town in Maine goes loopy. That’s especially true when you have episodic “troubles” to fix, and have to maintain the long arc’s direction.

The show held its own by way of the onscreen chemistry of the three main stars, and the charm of the supporting actors.

Now the final season is headed your way, and it’s not only something that is worth the price of admission just on the twists and revelations of the season itself, it’s also loaded with special features. »

Game Of Thrones Season 6 Trailer Spells Out A Lot Of Doom – Go Figure

8 March 2016 6:38 PM, PST

Game of Thrones is returning April 24th, and the show has finally released a trailer, but don’t expect a lot of information in it, or from anywhere else.

HBO has decided that it will not release episodes to the press ahead of air, and frankly, it’s hard to blame them. What difference could it make?

On the other hand, the trailer does give several hints to what’s coming your way. Certain people are no longer, apparently, quite as powerful as they were. Certain people don’t look like they’re going to be around long. Others just aren’t having a good day. Well, maybe the trailer doesn’t tell you much that you didn’t already know actually.

Then again, maybe you’ve read all the books, and have a fair idea of which way things are headed overall, but if you only watch the show, »

Star Wars “Secrets Of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey” Doc/Blu-Ray Bonus Hits SXSW

8 March 2016 11:36 AM, PST

The home release for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will include a feature-length documentary about its creation, Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey, but it’s getting a premiere of its own at SXSW.

If any film deserves this sort of treatment, it’s probably the latest Star Wars installment, especially considering that the focus is on the entire journey, encompassing the entire road to getting this film into theaters.

Whether the film itself is deserving of such treatment, or not, it’s certainly the sort of thing that fans are going to enjoy, and adds tremendous value to the price of a Blu-Ray.

The Blu-Ray hits on April 5th, with a slightly earlier release on Digital April 1st.

Kim Kardashian Nude Selfie Response Is A Big Thank You America

8 March 2016 11:01 AM, PST

Kim Kardashian, whose talents include a certain embodiment of the zeitgeist, and nothing else, took to Twitter to post a nude selfie, which obviously broke the internet.

This, also obviously, led to some response, notably by Chloë Grace Moretz, and Bette Midler of all people.

Midler’s response was a bit of a general Wtf, and Kim K. naturally responded in a way that only those who are non-meritoriously famous (read: perpetually nine) might, but Moretz’ response was more of a lamentation at the current state of affairs in the world, and Kim K. didn’t like it.

To the nude selfie, Moretz responded-

@KimKardashian I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than-

Chloë Grace Moretz (@ChloeGMoretz) March 7, 2016

and Kim K. responded –

let’s all welcome @ChloeGMoretz to twitter, since no one knows who she is. »

Zootopia Review

8 March 2016 9:54 AM, PST

Disney films have taken a turn in recent years towards a new level of depth within the fun, and movies like Frozen and Big Hero 6 are shining examples. Zootopia not only continues that progress, it’s a move in a more daring direction.

Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) is a bunny with a dream, and the commentary on society begins with her own parents, who, with the best of intentions, try to talk her out of it. Judy hopes to be a cop one day, but in her universe of anthropomorphized animals, rabbits don’t become cops.

Her brains win out, and she gets through the police academy, but her first day on the job serves to continue her education when Chief Bogo (Idris Elba) assigns her to traffic duty, and this despite the fact that there’s too much “real work” (this is not a traffic officer’s favorite film) to handle. »

The Best Movies Of 2015 – The Top 30

8 March 2016 7:05 AM, PST

The Best Movies of 2015

I am notorious for despising lists of all kinds, but especially those that make me compare movies across all genres.

This year, things went a little differently. I loved an astounding number of films this year, and while the usual suspects are mostly on this list, I wasn’t as impressed with many of the bigger names.

But, the list is long, so I’ll get right to it, but I have to say that if you’re going to question me on the actual positioning (This is 8, but this is 15!), don’t bother. I don’t especially believe in the order anyway, and fine, you think that one is better… knock yourself out.

Here we go!
