Interview: Director Roar Uthaug on the Humanity and Horror of The Wave

After rocks from the mountain Åkerneset crumble into the fjord below, the townspeople of Geiranger only have ten minutes to escape a tsunami in The Wave, a terrific thriller out now in theaters and on VOD from Magnolia Pictures. Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with The Wave director Roar Uthaug (who is also set to helm the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot) about filming in the actual Norwegian town where this disaster will one day occur and keeping the story character-centric amidst all the carnage.

Roar, thanks for taking the time to talk about The Wave and congratulations on the film. Have you always been interested in making a disaster film?

Roar Uthaug: Yeah, definitely. Those were the kind of movies I grew up going to see at the cinema—Twister and Armageddon and those kinds of movies. They definitely have been an inspiration on my filmmaking. »

Daria Nicolodi, Unsung Hero of Italian Horror

For as much criticism as the horror genre receives for being sexist and misogynistic, it has a long history of strong characters and iconic performances from women, whether it’s Elsa Lanchester in The Bride of Frankenstein, Heather Langenkamp in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Janet Leigh in Psycho, or Sharni Vinson in You’re Next. In the late 1970s and ’80s, actresses who stood out within the genre were dubbed “Scream Queens.” But that title doesn’t do justice to Daria Nicolodi, frequent collaborator of Dario Argento and a titan of Italian horror. That’s because Daria Nicolodi is no Scream Queen. Daria Nicolodi is a goddamn goddess.

A too often unsung hero of genre cinema, Daria Nicolodi helped shape the face of Italian horror both in front of and behind the camera. The story goes that Florence-born Nicolodi was so taken with Argento’s first film, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, »

Director Shane Black Talks The Predator

With the May release of The Nice Guys gradually approaching, writer/director Shane Black is starting to do the press rounds again, and in a recent interview he talked about his upcoming Predator movie.

Speaking with Thrillist (via Collider), Black discussed how Fox’s willingness to really invest into The Predator as an “event status” film helped convince him to take the helm:

“They [Fox] said, “What if we said to you we want to reinvent this, and really treat it with as much of an event status, or as much hoopla as we would the Alien prequel, which is coming out also? We really want to make this something. The kind of movie that people line up for.” I said, “Really, you’ll spend a bunch of money?” They go, “Yep.” I go, “Make it really scale, spectacle?” “Yep.” “Shit, that sounds interesting.”

SXSW 2016 Review: Phantasm: Remastered is a Stunning Work of Art

22 March 2016 1:52 PM, PDT

Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm was released almost 37 years ago and, for almost as long, genre fans have suffered with the subpar treatment of this cult classic in terms of the film’s appearance and inadequate sound mix. Thankfully, that is no longer the case due to J. J. Abrams and the awesome folks at Bad Robot taking on the 4K restoration of Phantasm as a passion project, and the results are beyond stunning. The film has never looked or sounded better than it does in this iteration and, for those of us who have fondly followed the series, it’s a beautiful tribute to both the fans and the work of those involved with Phantasm, including the late, great Angus Scrimm.

Considering the climate of the genre when it was released in the late ’70s, Phantasm has always stood out to me as one of the more uniquely terrifying horror »

Interview: Writer/Director Abner Pastoll and Co-Star Barbara Crampton Talk Road Games

22 March 2016 10:43 AM, PDT

One of the more intriguing thrillers I’ve seen in some time is Road Games, which was written and directed by Abner Pastoll and recently debuted on VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight. Starring Andrew Simpson, Joséphine de La Baume, Barbara Crampton, and Frédéric Pierrot, the film begins as a whodunit road movie and is later infused with some unexpectedly fun slasher undertones.

Daily Dead recently sat down with both Pastoll and genre legend Crampton to hear more about their collaboration, Pastoll’s approach to crafting the film’s mystery, their experiences shooting Road Games, and much more.

Congrats on making a movie that keeps you guessing and takes a few unexpected turns. Abner, what were your inspirations behind this story and your approach to really toying with viewers?

Abner Pastoll: In terms of playing with people’s suspicions, those inspirations are totally from Hitchcock’s films because he would always do that. »

Kickstarter for Lovecraftian Card Game Necronomicards

22 March 2016 8:36 AM, PDT

Designer Andy Hunt recently launched a Kickstarter for NecronomiCards, a strategy card game inspired by both mythological and Lovecraftian themes and creatures, and we have official details and a look at the game.

From Andy Hunt: “Introducing NecronomiCards, a fast-paced card game for 2-4 necromancers-in-training whose idea of a good time is to spend 30-45 minutes (or more) attacking each other with horrific monsters and ancient deities. Does that sound like you? Then you’re in the right place, new best friend!

NecronomiCards is a deviously simple game to learn. You start with two decks of cards: Spells and Summons.

Spell cards each have 4-6 different magic symbols on them. Each player starts with 2 Spell cards and then draws 1 new card every turn. You can never have more than 6 Spell cards in your hand at once though. The goal is to pair up matching symbols across your Spell cards to create hands, »

SXSW 2016 Interview: Co-Stars Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto Talk Don’T Breathe

21 March 2016 3:01 PM, PDT

Last week at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead had the chance to catch up with Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto, two of the co-stars from Don’t Breathe, the latest project from Fede Alvarez that made its world premiere at the fest. During our time with the duo, they discussed their complicated characters in the film, Fede’s approach as a director, the chemistry they shared between themselves and with fellow co-star Jane Levy, and the force of nature that is Stephen Lang.

Look for Don’t Breathe in theaters everywhere on August 26th courtesy of Ghost House Pictures and Screen Gems.

What is really interesting about your characters is that, obviously, they’re motivated by less than moral reasons, but yet the story never judges them, which I think is important. You still have to be invested in Alex, Money, and Rocky to want them to survive. Were »
