Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi

The Buzz: The Divergent Series is doing that thing where it seems to be getting more popular around the world while it's foothold in the U.S. might be slipping. Insurgent made $20 million less than its predecessor, Divergent -- a substantial difference when you're just inside blockbuster margins. One cool thing we hear about Allegiant - Part 1: There's a mix of action and welcome character development. The downside: Fans will truly have to wait over a year for Allegiant - Part 2?

Certificate PG   -   Drama

The Buzz: It's getting tricky to assess the potential fortunes of a Faith-based release; with so many releases on the calendar, it's only natural that some are destined for success while other will surprise and/or disappoint. Miracles from Heaven seems to be a likely hit since the core audience tends to gravitate toward family-centric storytelling instead of epic/historical depictions of Christ. Jennifer Garner should enjoy another mid-level hit; she's sorta on a streak, you know.

A father and son go on the run after the dad learns his child possesses special powers.

The Buzz: Knowing that Jeff Nichols has structured his latest project like a chase movie/conspiracy thriller, and that distributor Warner Bros. is treating is as a specialty release, has me on edge in all the best ways. At the heart of Midnight Special's story is another examination of parental instincts, which Nichols explored so uniquely in Take Shelter, and few writer/directors created male characters as complex as his. - Arno Kazarian

Metascore: 40/100 (6 reviews)
A foul-mouthed former gymnastics bronze medalist must fight for her local celebrity status when a new young athlete's star rises in town.

The Buzz: When a sitcom star goes rated-R, plenty of press will follow. In the case of Melissa Rauch's foul-mouthed starring role in this aging Olympic champion comedy, initial reviews seemed promising, but more sober looks at the movie say it doesn't work hard enough for gold status. Lesser movies in this genre such as Drop Dead Gorgeous prove that sometimes PG-13 can be funnier.

Metascore: 61/100 (10 reviews)
An Irish sports journalist becomes convinced that Lance Armstrong's performances during the Tour de France victories are fueled by banned substances. With this conviction, he starts hunting for evidence that will expose Armstrong.

The Buzz: The hair & make-up people who worked on this film deserve a round of applause for transforming Ben Foster into a creepy Lance Armstrong doppelganger; the nose, chin, and hairline are incredibly well done. With Foster starring and Stephen Frears directing, you'd think the reviews would be stronger, but even the most supportive reviewers say the story doesn't dig deep enough to truly satisfy. We'll see about that. We're looking forward to Foster vs. Chris O'Dowd, and we are thinking that Jesse Plemons, who was so wonderful in "Fargo" and Black Mass, is one to watch here.

Krisha returns for Thanksgiving dinner after ten years away from her family, but past demons threaten to ruin the festivities.

The Buzz: Writer/director Trey Edward Shults drew from his personal history to create this study of a family who becomes unthreaded by the return of one of their own. Shults cast his relatives in dramatized roles, and the resulting film first broke out at SXSW last year and experienced further success on the festival circuit. I'm interested to see how a larger audience reacts to the film. - Arno

The Buzz: Mathieu Amalric and writer/director Arnaud Desplechin reunite 20 years after My Sex Life ... to catch up with Paul Dédalus as he returns Paris after years of living in Tajikistan, but life doesn't look the same to Paul; in fact, his romance with Esther, another character from My Sex Life ... is re-conceptualized here. It's a celebrated return to form for Desplechin, who came off the rails a bit with his recent English-language debut, Jimmy P..
