Dr. Dre's Exes, Michel'le and Dee Barnes, Speak Out on Abusive Past Not Being Shown in Straight Outta Compton

6 hours ago | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Straight Outta Compton was greeted with massive success over opening weekend. Not only did the movie release to some pretty rave reviews, but it slaughtered the box office, blowing the competition out of the water with a $56.1 million haul. However, there are some who have their own issues with the biopic, which follows rap group N.W.A.'s rise to fame, and they're not afraid to speak on it. We're talking about two of Dr. Dre's exes, Michel'le Toussaint and Dee Barnes, who have shared their thoughts and criticism of the film for failing to recognize their respective abusive relationships with the now-billionaire producer. Michel'le, an early 90's R&B singer and »

U.N.C.L.E.: Will International Moviegoers Save WB's Domestic Box Office Flop?

8 hours ago | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake: »

‘Straight Outta Compton’ Will Cruise Past Trio of Newcomers at Weekend Box Office

14 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Any doubt that “Straight Outta Compton” is not your typical hip-hip movie should be erased this weekend, when the R-rated tale of the gangsta rap group N.W.A is expected to steamroll Friday’s three wide openers for its second consecutive triumph. The F. Gary Gray-directed “Straight Outta Compton” will take in roughly $30 million over the three days, analysts project. That should be more than enough to put away the Jason Blum-produced horror film “Sinister 2” from Focus Features and Gramercy Pictures and Fox’s “Hitman: Agent 47,” a thriller starring Rupert Friend and Zachary Quinto, which »

Box Office: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Will Dwarf ‘Hitman: Agent 47,’ ‘American Ultra’

14 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Straight Outta Compton” could move from gold to platinum territory in its second weekend of release.

The rap drama from Universal and Legendary will continue to dominate the box office, earning an estimated $30 million and pushing its domestic haul past the $100 million mark. That’s a nice return, considering the fact that producing the N.W.A biopic only set the partners back $29 million. To capitalize on the strong word of mouth, the film will add more than 200 theaters to its current crop of 2,757 locations.

With its unstinting look at urban poverty, “Straight Outta Compton” may be the year’s most unorthodox blockbuster. Its continued success could spell trouble for a trio of new releases hoping to make a splash during the dog days of summer.

Of these new entrants, “Sinister 2,” a micro-budget horror venture from Blumhouse and Focus Features, should be the least impacted. The sequel to 2012’s “Sinister” should pull in $15 million, »

Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., “Straight Outta Compton” tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.

Straight Outta Compton isn't actually showing in Compton

21 hours ago | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Nwa biopic Straight Outta Compton hit big at the Us box office this weekend ($67 million and counting), but residents of the California city won't actually be able to see it.

The reason? Compton itself doesn't actually have any cinemas. Dr Dre and Ice Cube fans will have to journey 4 miles east to Paramount's Bianchi Stadium theatre to witness their city depicted on-screen.

USC professor of sociology Manuel Pastor told CBS Los Angeles that Compton is "a low-income area, it's been heavily dis-invested in".

"When you live in a community that doesn't have that kind of retail, it's a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued," Pastor said.

However, plans are underway to bring an entertainment district to the city, complete with a 16-screen multiplex cinema.

Dre, a co-producer on the film, will also donate royalties from his tie-in album Compton to fund an arts »

Ava DuVernay’s tweets about ‘Straight Outta Compton’ are worth checking out

19 August 2015 12:08 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Growing up, I was a huge fan of hip-hop and a huge fan of Nwa. I still am, and I even still rock my Oakland Raiders jacket from time to time. Needless to say, I was highly anticipating Straight Outta Compton, and thankfully the movie didn’t disappoint. While the movie isn’t perfect, it is still one of the best biopics I’ve seen in quite some time and a film built to last, thanks to the confident direction, and engaging performances from a terrific cast.

Ava DuVernay, who’s best known for her work as a director and screenwriter of such films as Middle of Nowhere (which won her the Best Director Prize at the Sundance film festival), and more recently Selma (making her the first African-American female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award), recently took to Twitter to express her feelings about director F. Gary Gray’s Nwa bio-pic. »

You Can't Actually See Straight Outta Compton In Compton

18 August 2015 3:20 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Straight Outta Compton has made quite a large impact since hitting cinemas on Friday. And while cities across the United States are currently reveling in the on-screen antics of Ice Cube, Eazy-e, Dr Dre, DJ Yella, and Mc Ren, there is one place that hasn.t been able to see the film yet. Almost cruelly, that place is Compton itself, because the Los Angeles neighborhood doesn.t actually have a cinema in which it can play. The F. Gary Gray-directed film is primarily set in the titular region, which is situated just south of downtown La and has a population of around 95,000 people. You.re probably wondering how such a large hub doesn.t have one cinema. Well, according to Manuel Pastor, a USC professor of sociology talking to CBS News, the lack of a cinema is because the area is a "low income area" that has "been heavily »

Dr. Dre Abuse Victim Dee Barnes: Compton Director Had a Good Reason to Hide Misogyny

18 August 2015 3:13 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

While the state violence endured by black men is a narrative that runs throughout the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton, the real-life violence women experience at the hands of men — specifically, at the hands of Dr. Dre — is conspicuously missing. Dee Barnes, the former host of Fox hip-hop show Pump It Up! and one of Dr. Dre's victims, watched the film and wrote an essay for Gawker addressing the missing piece of the story line. "That event isn’t depicted in Straight Outta Compton," she says of Dre's attack on her in an L.A. nightclub in 1991. "But I don’t think it should have been, either. The truth is too ugly for a general audience. I didn’t want to see a depiction of me getting beat up, just like I didn’t want to see a depiction of Dre beating up Michel’le, his one-time girlfriend. »

Two legends of very different fields are getting biopics.

First up, Variety reports that Warner Bros. Pictures are developing an untitled drama about legendary late astrophysicist Carl Sagan who hosted the original "Cosmos" series.

Specifics of what parts of his life the film would cover are being kept under wraps. Zach Dean ("Deadfall") penned the script while Lynda Obst and Sagan's widow Ann Druyan are producing.

Meanwhile The Wrap reports that Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson is in discussions to play Aretha Franklin in a biopic from producer Scott Bernstein ("Straight Outta Compton") for his Smb Films banner.

The film will deal with the famed singer's rise to fame in the 1960s and 1970s and delve into her relationship with her abusive ex-husband Ted White.

Hudson has not been officially cast as there is no deal in place as yet, but a rep has confirmed that conversations have taken place. »

FX Snaps Up TV Rights To Straight Outta Compton

Fresh off of a record-breaking opening weekend in the United States, where F. Gary Gray’s acclaimed rap drama stormed to $60.2 million, FX has locked down the TV premiere rights for Straight Outta Compton.

Striking while the iron is hot, it’s understood that the network also secured rights to Christopher McQuarrie’s chart-topping blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Jurassic World, Minions and Universal’s billion-dollar baby, Furious 7, while Trainwreck, Adam Sandler’s derided Pixels, Terminator: Genisys, Ted 2, Pitch Perfect 2, Taken 3, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Spy and Home will also make their televised bow through FX.

Going off of Straight Outta Compton‘s strong domestic debut, not to mention its strong word of mouth, one of the network’s major coups is undoubtedly Gray’s hard-hitting biopic. Orbiting around N.W.A.’s defining rise to prominence in the late 80s, the film is a revelatory and timely »
