Starring: Mya Taylor, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, James Ransone, Karren Karagulian and Mickey O’Hagan

There were some big runaway smashes in 2015, but nothing got the film world talking like Sean Baker’s Tangerine. Talks about revolutionary use of iPhones and real life comedy were all the rage on film blogs everywhere, even as film festival season passed. So what exactly made this the most talked about film in 2015?

Tangerine follows transgendered sex worker Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) as she is released from jail following a 28-day prison sentence. When she meets with her friend Alexander (Mya Taylor), she reveals that Sin-Dee’s boyfriend and pimp Chester has been having an affair with a cis gender prostitute called Dinah. Sin-Dee goes on a voyage round the city to try and find her, while Alexander tries to get some trade and people »

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 review: “Disappointingly average”

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 review: “A sequel that is very average and harmful to gender stereotypes…

Full disclosure before this review beings, I haven’t see My Big Fat Greek Wedding and have avoided watching it like the plague ever since its release in 2002. I also only agreed to watch this film under duress and as a favour to our editor-in-chief who was taking a much earned break on the day of the screening. What follows is a review from the perspective of someone who is coming to the series stone cold.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is as generic as you’d expect and despite not having seen the first it feels very much like a lather, rinse, repeat affair. This time around the titular wedding focusses in on the older generation of the family as, thanks to a loophole, their first wedding wasn’t actually legally binding. »

Mojave review: “Somewhere, with serial killers”

Mojave review: Oscar Isaac dials his psycho up to ten.

Mojave review by Kat Hughes. Mojave is made up of several talk-heavy scenes between lead character Tom and Jack as they spout quotes from various texts and practitioners. This over reliance on references will leave some viewers alienated and struggling to keep up, though thankfully after the head-scratchingly confusing beginning, events slowly (and I mean slowly) start to fall into place.

There’s every chance that Mojave could have been a film that just disappeared, however the inclusion of a certain Oscar Isaac is sure to mean it will reach a wider audience. After his turn as Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens the world and his dog fell in love with Isaac and he’s developed quite the loyal following. With Mojave they will get a treat as not only is the actor once again on top form, »

U.S. Box-Office: Disney’s Zootropolis dominates ‘Allegiant’

21 March 2016 1:21 AM, PDT

Zootropolis

Zootropolis, or indeed Zootopia as it is known in its domestic territory, continues to dominate the U.S. box-office, and has remained at the top of the chart for its third week. It has dominated proceedings since release, and this week stopped The Divergent Series: Allegiant from grabbing the top spot on the chart. Zootropolis has now take over $200 million in North America alone, and has a total of $591 million around the world, with the U.K. and Japan still to have the film open.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant opened to just $29 million, a huge drop from the opening of the last film in the series, Insurgent, which grabbed $54.6 million in its first three days back last year. The film opened in the U.K. last week to very poor reviews. The film has a worldwide haul of around $82 million.

Taron Egerton on those Han Solo rumours

21 March 2016 12:47 AM, PDT

Taron Egerton is one of the hottest rising stars at the moment, and he appears in the brilliant Eddie The Eagle, playing the title character, which finally starts to roll into U.K. cinemas from next Monday. Over the past couple of weeks, Egerton, who is about to start filming Kingsman 2, has been linked to the roll of a young Han Solo in the planned Phil Lord and Chris Miller stand alone Star Wars movie, which is due in 2018.

At the weekend, while doing press for Eddie The Eagle, Egerton appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show, and had the following to say about those Han Solo rumours.

“I’ve heard this rumor, yes. I mean, I’ve seen the stuff on the Internet, and I think any lad of my age would kill to play a part like that. It’s very, very flattering. I have no idea if »

Kristen Bell set to start recording ‘Frozen 2’ this month

21 March 2016 12:41 AM, PDT

Kristen Bell is to appear in the forthcoming Melissa McCarthy documentary The Boss, which rolls into U.S. cinemas soon, and during a chat with the website Collider, Bell spoke a little about the planned sequel to the massive Disney hit Frozen. The actress was asked if she had already started work in the highly anticipated film.

“We’re just about to,” she said. “They’ve just written it and they’re still doing tweaks, but I think we should be recording this month”.

Original helmets Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck will direct the film, and Lee has written the screenplay.

Bell added that “the story is great, and they exude quality. What I know about that whole team is that they wouldn’t just put something out to put it out. That’s why it took them so long to even announce that we were doing a second one. »

More ‘300’ movies on the way, says Zack Snyder

21 March 2016 12:27 AM, PDT

He’s out and about on the promotional tour for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, and Zack Snyder has commented on another series of movies that he was heavily involved with a couple of years back. 300 and its sequel 300: Rise Of An Empire got quite the following, and Snyder, who directed the first film and produce the second, said there may be more of them on the way.

Speaking with Collider, the filmmaker said: “We’ve been talking a lot about sort of different incarnations of 300. We’ve been talking about is there a way, possibly, we move out of Ancient Greece and use it as a framing device for other conflicts that happened throughout history. I think I mentioned that we talked about the Revolutionary War version, and we talked about the Alamo, and we’ve talked about there’s a battle in China, a ‘Lost Legion’ kind of concept, »

David Koepp to write Indiana Jones 5 script

21 March 2016 12:21 AM, PDT

David Koepp, a long time collaborator with Steven Spielberg, will re-team with the legendary director for the planned Indiana Jones 5 film, which will release in cinemas in 2019. Koepp wrote the last film in the series, the very poorly received Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, but he has also been behind some of Spielberg’s biggest hits, including Jurassic Park and War Of The Worlds.

We’re not expecting for production to start on Indy 5 for at least another year, or maybe even two, but it has been confirmed that both Spielberg and Harrison Ford will return to the beloved franchise for one last adventure.

Indy 5 will be in cinemas in the summer of 2018. More news as we get it.
