Aviation Camps

The Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy | Grades 9-12 | June 19-24 | 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The ACE Academy at Delaware State University is a program designed to offer an introduction to the aviation industry and aviation careers to middle and high school students. The goal is to provide an opportunity that will provide insight and hands-on experience for students to learn the history of aviation, fundamentals of aerodynamics, the role of government in aviation, pioneers in aviation, and the many careers available in the aviation industry. Students will participate in many engaging activities: model aircraft building; introductory orientation flights; visits to aviation museums; FAA and air traffic control facilities; air shows (if available); aviation speaker forums; and field trips to military and commercial facilities. The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals ACE Academy is a nationally recognized program co-sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees.

OBAP/DSU Solo Flight Academy | Grades 10-12 | July 10-24 | 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The goal of the OBAP/DSU Solo Flight Academy is to excite young people about flying and their potential in the aviation field. We bring this excitement to life though academics and actual aircraft flying culminated by an aircraft solo flight. The academy activities form the foundation of a productive career in aviation or other professional fields. Your son or daughter will receive approximately 10 hours of flight time and 30 hours of ground school. The program fee includes room and board, approximately 10 hours of flight time; flight computer, logbook and plotter; ground school textbooks and supplies; planned tours (weather permitting); and one year OBAP student membership. The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals Solo Flight Academy is a nationally recognized program co-sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees.

Business and Finance Camps

Camp Wall Street 101 | Grades 9-12 | August 1-5  | 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Camp Wall Street 101 at Delaware State University is a day camp for students entering grades 9-12 with an interest in finance and the stock market. The camp will be held primarily in the state-of-the-art Financial Network Trading Room, which replicates a real-world trading experience and functions as a laboratory and classroom. Students will learn the basics about financial management from financial professionals. Participants will compete for prizes and awards. The camp includes a field trip to enhance their experience. Some transportation may be provided. This program is sponsored by Delaware Financial Literacy Fund.

Junior Entrepreneurs in Training (JET) program | Grades 6-9 | July 7-18  | 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Does your young person have an idea but is not sure how to make it a reality? Does he or she want to know what it takes to operate a business? The JET Program at Delaware State University teaches entrepreneurship to youth in a fun and exciting summer camp. Students in the JET Program will participate in exercises to spark their creativity; participate in hands-on activities; act upon a dream and be their own boss; learn how to think like an entrepreneur; and create a business plan all while making new friends and having fun!  Students will participate in Market Day and take part ina business plan competition with the chance to win prizes and awards.  Some transportation may be provided. This program is sponsored by the Roy Klein Foundation and the Laffey McHugh Foundation.

National Summer Transportation Institute | Grades 11-12 | TBA

The National STI (NSTI) is a transportation-focused career awareness initiative designed to introduce secondary school students to all modes of transportation-related careers, provide academic enhancement activities, and encourage students to pursue transportation-related courses of study at the college/university level. The program was developed to address future transportation workforce needs by ensuring that the industry has a well-trained, qualified and diverse workforce well into the 21st century. This program will take place if funding is received.

Science Camps

(STARS) Science and Technology Academy for Residence Scholars | Grades 10-12 | July 10 - July 23

The Science and Technology Academy for Residence Scholars is a two week residential enrichment program on the campus of Delaware State University for rising 10th-12th grade high school students. The STARS program is designed to stimulate and extend the interest of high school students with a GPA average of B or above in the fields of mathematics, science and information technology. The science labs, computer labs and classrooms at DSU will be the setting for small group, hands-on activities in Mathematics, Science, Information Technology, English and SAT preparation. The majority of STARS instructors are DSU professors.

OSCAR Summer High School Student Research Program  |  Grades 9-12 | June 6- July 28 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The OSCAR Summer research program is an 8-week program where students are mentored by faculty, graduate and undergraduate student researchers from Physics and Engineering. During the 8-week program, students will conduct research in various OSCAR laboratories and at the end of the program they will present their research at the Annual Delaware State University Summer Research Symposium. Participants in our summer program will receive a stipend of $1,500 for working 35 hours per week for the 8-week duration of the program. Criteria for participating in our program: An interest in Physics, Pre-Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or Chemistry; rising junior or senior, 3.0 GPA or higher, U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Sports Camps

2016 All Day Sports Camp  | Grades 1-6 | Six weekly sessions June 6-July 29 | 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

At Delaware State University's 2016 All Sports Day Camp, college coaches will teach and work with campers, who will have access to all University-sponsored sports, the swimming pool and intercollegiate facilities to enhance their camp experience. Besides the athletic component, campers will receive a variety of non-athletic experiences. Academic enrichment, guest speakers and more have been planned each week. Payment plans are available; lunch and water will be provided by the camp, and each camper will receive a gift bag.

Youth Enrichment Camps

Youthful Essence Natural Skin Care Product Creations  | Grade 5-8 | Jun 27- Jul 1| 8 am - 5 pm  

Campers will establish a business by creating a natural skin care product line. You will witness your child transform into a scientist as they begin to mix a variety of natural ingredients together to create a new product.  The campers will control every aspect of the skin care line from marketing to packaging. Logos and labels will be created by the students for the finished products .  They will become educated on  how chemicals affect the largest organ of the body “the skin” and obtain an understanding of why there is growing awareness of the hazards of everyday skin care can cause.  Due to allergy issue parents will be supplied with a complete list of all the natural ingredients that will be used during this week of camp.

Release the Inner Artist  | Grades 3-8 | July 18-22  | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Campers will explore creative expression through a variety of visual exercises, figure drawing, still lifes and abstraction. Projects will encourage experimentation in a variety of mediums including found objects, photography, mixed media, graphics and traditional paints. Inspiration will be drawn from song analysis, poetry, nature and everyday life. Art history topics will broaden knowledge scope and foster an appreciation for the arts. Campers are expected to bring some supplies; only basic art materials will be on hand.

Actors in the Attic | Grades 6-8 | July 25-29  |8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Calling all artistic expressions! Actors in the Attic is a camp that will channel your child’s excitement and entertaining abilities into the pathways of dramatic performance. The basic elements of acting will be explored and campers can enjoy expressing themselves through the art of movement and through being vocal by putting on an acting performance at the end of the camp.

Culinary Arts in the Hospitality Industry | Grades 6-8 | June 20-24 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Culinary Arts in the Hospitality Industry is a Hospitality and Tourism Management summer program at Delaware State University for middle school students. The goal is to expose students through hands-on activities to careers in culinary arts and hospitality management. Participants will develop, plan and prepare food items, based on restaurant themes; design and set up specified place settings using china ware, based on restaurant themes; explore back of house restaurant operations, to include design, equipment and setup; conduct cost analysis of food pricing; and design and set up a culinary cuisine for a family of four.

Computer Graphics for Juniors |  Grades 6-12 | June 27 – July 1  | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Learn the basics or hone your existing skills using PhotoShop, Illustrator and Painter. The full-day Computer Graphics for Juniors camp at Delaware State University will have your child or teenager begging for more time to show off  his or her design skills. Sample projects include mock Web page design, photo restoration, digital landscape painting, CD cover design, character building and much more. Introduction to 3D Modeling with Blender  | Grades 4-8 | Dates TBA | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Blender is an amazingly versatile piece of free and open-source 3D computer graphics software. It is very popular and is used by professionals, amateurs and hobbyists to create animated films, visual effects, 2D art, 3D printed models, simulations, interactive 3D applications and video games.

This hands-on workshop is designed to teach kids the theory and techniques of 3D mesh modeling, rendering and animation. In a short one week, students will go from manipulating primitive mesh geometry, such as a cube, and work their way up to constructing more complex 3D modes, applying textures, setting up lights, animating objects and rendering scenes.

Learning to Code by Playing Games | Grades 4-8 | Dates TBA | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Even if your kids don’t go on to code for living, a basic understanding of programming concepts improves problem-solving and thinking skills which are both transferable and empowering. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates says that: “Learning to write programs stretches your mind and helps you think better, creates a way of thinking about things that I think is helpful in all domains.“

Not all kids can or want to jump straight into the traditional programming environments. For them, there are plenty of games around that will teach the basics of programming in a fun and accessible way. This hands-on workshop is designed to make kids love programming. The instructor will expose students to fun games and puzzles designed to teach kids the concepts of programming.

By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and demonstrate concepts like conditions, loops and functions.

Are you looking for a program that will help your child learn how science, technology, engineering and math impact our everyday lives? Look no further! Come join us as we learn to design and build solutions using LEGO elements. This is a hands-on program designed to capture young children’s curiosity and direct it toward discovering how science and technology impact the world around them, and features a real-world challenge to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Your child will build simple machines using gears, pulleys, levers, switches and cranks. Each week he or she will tackle a different problem or challenge. Children will display their creativity as they work together as a team to research and build models that solve problems engineers and scientists face every day.

Do you want to give your child a jump-start on a high-paying, fun career in the future, all while they are having fun?  The LEGO Mindstorm Camps at Delaware State University are a perfect way to do just that. The LEGO Mindstorms series kits contain software and hardware to create small, customizable and programmable robots. This program will allow students to develop skills in science, mathematics, technology and engineering.  Students will develop basic trouble-shooting, problem-solving and critical thinking, while promoting teamwork, cooperative learning and computer programming skills.

MindStorm Robotics Classified  Shhh…Top Secret!!!!!!  | August 15-19 | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

This is the final week of Mindstorm Summer Camp and it’s top secret … Shhh! Students who have participated in the prior Mindstorm camps will build the FIRST LEGO League field missions for the upcoming competition season. They will try to predict the placement of the field’s components, how they function and the possible names of the different missions. Students will also learn about the FIRST LEGO League competition and the FLL Core Values.  Finally, the students will build and program robots that will attempt perform the various tasks on the field like at an actual robotics competition.

“Science is Fun!” – A Chinese Immersion Summer Camp | Grades 4-6  | Jun 20-24  | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

In this unique summer camp, students will participate in hands-on laboratory activities and learn how science is connected with real-world situations while becoming more fluent in Chinese conversation. We’ll also make traditional Chinese crafts each day during the week.

Student Leadership Training (SLT)  |  Grades 4-9  |  July 18-22  |  8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Becoming/being a teenager is both exciting and challenging.  Student Leadership Training (SLT) camp will cultivate life skills for both personal and academic success, helping campers deal with the tough issues and life-changing decisions they may face. SLT is designed to promote socialization, independence and leadership skills as well as build and enhance self-esteem and confidence.  Through a variety of activities, campers will learn life skills tools such as time management, basic money management and workforce readiness skills for youth.  The cornerstone of SLT is “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens”; author Sean Covey applies the timeless principles of the Seven Habits to preteen/ teens. It provides a step-by-step guide to help teens improve self-image, build friendships, resist peer pressure, achieve their goals, get along with their parents, and much more.

Tour and Explore the Global Shores Camp  | Grades 4-8 | June 13-17  | 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Office of International Affairs is delighted to introduce the first year of a unique camp, “Tour and Explore the Global Shores.” For five days, this cultural camp will introduce children to world cultures with a week of stories, music, crafts, games, snacks, and special guests from other countries and cultures. Campers will focus on cultural/language immersion, experiential learning and making meaningful connections across national, linguistic and cultural borders through activities. They will also be able to explore their feelings in a supportive environment.

Campers will “visit” a different country each day, create their own travel scrapbooks, receive a passport and a Tour & Explore the Global Shores T-shirt. Campers will practice tai chi, discuss books, play Don Quixote, try their skills at Korean brush painting, explore German holidays and much, much more! The camp will culminate with PowerPoint presentations from campers on their favorite country.

Participation in this camp will expose youth to become well-informed global leaders and citizens, travel and outdoor adventure, and an interest in studying abroad in high school and in college.
