162 days until Star Wars: Latest tie-in novel has a familiar ship on the cover

7 July 2016 2:50 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Between the fall of Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi and the rise of the First Order in The Force Awakens, a lot happened in the Star Wars universe. Neither the heroes, villains, or scoundrels were sitting on their laurels for three decades. Nothing encompasses how many chunks of galactic history audiences are missing like the downed Star Destroyer on Jakku. Here was a whole battle that took place off-screen, with nary a hint as to what happened. Until now. In ‘Aftermath: Empire’s End’ — the second* novel in a new Star Wars trilogy by Chuck Wendig — fans will finally learn how that fateful battle over the desert planet played out. The ‘Aftermath’ series bridges the gap years between the end of Jedi and the beginning of Force Awakens. Yesterday Wendig shared the cover for ‘Empire’s End’ on his blog, Terrible Minds, and it looks appropriately catastrophic: *Update: Haha! »

When Is It Too Late For A Movie Sequel?

5 July 2016 11:11 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

They say that late is better than never, but are those really words to live by when it comes to movie sequels? Hollywood studios are currently in a deep phase of mining existing properties for new material and, though this might seem like risk-averse behaviour at first glance, it really is a sizeable gamble.

The cynical view of this tendency to reboot is that corporations are trying to wring every last cent they can from ideas and icons that have proven successful in the past. There is some logic to it, because it works on the basis of what is essentially brand recognition – audiences will remember enjoying it last time, so they will feel compelled to return for more. The issue is in selecting the brand to be used, however – and this is not always as easy as it sounds.

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens Review

5 July 2016 10:08 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Eleven years ago, Tt Games jumped headfirst into its new forte: taking iconic franchises from the world of entertainment and mixing them with Lego blocks. It all started in 2005, with the release of Lego Star Wars, and has evolved into a behemoth that has since spawned block-based takes on many of pop culture’s most iconic properties. The studio’s fascination with George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away didn’t end in 2005, though, as sprinkled within the shelf’s worth of Lego games lay a few other Lego Star Wars titles, including the recently released Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

If you’ve played a Lego game before then you know that they all follow a very similar formula. You take control of at least two characters, and use their abilities to solve puzzles while dealing with dangers of varying types. It’s pretty simple stuff, and requires you »

Is Admiral Ackbar's Mon Calamari Cruiser Returning in Rogue One?

1 July 2016 5:41 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The next two live-action Star Wars movies are currently shooting and are at various points in the production process, but that being the case, we are getting a steady stream of details from all kinds of varied sources. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is currently undergoing reshoots, prepping for the December release, and Rian Johnson is getting near wrapping principal photography on Episode VIII. As such, there is a lot of new merchandise in the works, and as we know, Star Wars merch can be very revealing.

A new listing on Entertainment Earth has revealed a couple of new Hot Wheels two packs, which feature two different Star Wars ships in each package. At least one of the packages appears to be including a new vehicle called the "Starship Raven," but it is the more familiar vehicles that may be more interesting and revealing. One of the packages is »

Video Game Review – Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Kris Wall reviews Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Travellers Tales have got the Lego games down to a fine art now, year after year they deliver hugely fun and addictive adventures through some of our favourite universes, from Batman to Indiana Jones, from Harry Potter to The Avengers and just about everything in-between with last years Lego Dimensions filling in all the gaps imaginable. Though with so many coming out in rapid succession, the Lego video game series also starting coming with a nagging sense of repetition, something which I felt creeping in last years great Lego Jurassic World ,and which consequently made me sit out both Lego Avengers and Lego Dimensions for a break.

As fun as the Lego games are it’s difficult to shake the feeling that you’re not just collecting all the bricks all over again in a different universe, so a bit of »

Star Wars: Samuel L Jackson on Mace Windu

Is there still room for Mace Windu in the future Star Wars movies? Samuel L Jackson suggests so...

This story contains spoilers for Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith

Whatever your thoughts on George Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy, there was little denying that amongst their depicted collective of bureaucratic Jedi Council members, Samuel L Jackson’s Mace Windu at least knew how to get things done in a ruthless, non-Jedi-like manner. However, despite becoming a betrayed martyr in the process of Anakin Skywalker’s turn to the Dark Side, Jackson has his own theory about Mace’s fate; one that implies he’s very much alive.

Granted, Windu’s valiant early effort in 2005’s Revenge Of The Sith to slay the exposed evil of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine went completely awry thanks to Anakin’s slicing intervention. It resulted in a hand-amputated Windu absorbing »

X-Men: where now after X-Men: Apocalypse?

With X-Men: Apocalypse settling for just over $500m at the global box office, in what direction should the series head next? A few thoughts.

The X-Men franchise has never been one to set the box office alight in the way that, say, The Avengers does, with 2014’s Days Of Future Past’s box office topping out at $748 million world wide. Granted, X-Men kickstarted the current cinematic superhero revolution to much acclaim but after the initial two entries in the franchise, public and critical reception began to dwindle, as did box office returns.

X-Men: First Class proved to be the creative shot in the arm that the franchise needed and with Days Of Future Past hitting the highest box office results yet, it was expected that Apocalypse would catapult the series nearer to the billion-dollar club.

But it didn’t. In fact, X-Men: Apocalypse’s take is just north of $500m, »

Star Wars: Rogue One - Mon Mothma to get "significantly larger" role

Rebellion leader Mon Mothma is to get a "significantly larger" role in Star Wars: Rogue One, says producer Kathleen Kennedy...

Mon Mothma may not be a familiar name to many outside Star Wars' devoted fanbase, but the ethereal Rebel leader did get one of the most memorable lines in the whole franchise: "Many Bothans died to bring us this information." Nevertheless, Mothma's role in Return Of The Jedi was distinctly brief, and the character wound up on the cutting room floor in Revenge Of The Sith.

Thanks to the first trailer for Star Wars: Rogue One, however, we already know that Mon Mothma has a role in the forthcoming spin-off, and that she'll be played by Genevieve O'Reilly - the actress who previously played Mothma in that deleted scene in Revenge Of The Sith. (Mothma was played in Return Of The Jedi by Caroline Blakiston. »

Mon Mothma Will Have A “Significantly Larger” Role In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

24 June 2016 6:52 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is both a prequel to A New Hope and a sequel of sorts to Revenge of the Sith. It will feature a character from The Clone Wars and reveals how the Rebels got their hands on the Death Star plans, so you can see how director Gareth Edwards is clearly walking a fine line between both building on what’s come before and what’s yet to happen.

While Darth Vader is set to make his presence felt in a big way, another familiar face returning is Mon Mothma. A senator in the prequels and the leader of the Rebel Alliance in Return of the Jedi, her screentime so far amounts to just a few minutes, but it sounds like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will further flesh out her story.

Mothma is the one who seemingly sends Jyn Erso off to retrieve those plans, »

‘Mon Mothma’ Will Be Utilized In Rogue One Much More Than She Was In Return Of The Jedi

24 June 2016 5:35 PM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

In Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, Mon Mothma appeared and briefed the Rebel Alliance on the plan for the Battle of Endor. Aside from that moment, she didn’t really have a pivotal role in the film. Mothma in Return of the Jedi was portrayed by Caroline Blakiston, however, in Rogue One, she will be played by Genevieve O'Reill. This isn’t O'Reill’s first time portraying the Rebel Leader. She portrayed Mothma in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Don’t remember? Well, you wouldn’t, unless you own the DVD version. Sadly, all of her O'Reill’s scenes never made it into the final copy of the film. Never to fear though, she’s back in Rogue One and ready to lead! Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, spoke on Mon Mothma’s role in Rogue One, and she revealed that »

More Rogue One Photos Arrive; Mon Mothma's Role Explained

24 June 2016 1:42 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It has been a big week for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story reveals, with plenty of character and story details arriving alongside some absolutely stunning new photos. Today, we get an even closer look at the plot, along with some sure to become iconic images from this first Star Wars spinoff. This time, the focus is on returning character Mon Mothma, who was first introduced in Return of the Jedi. We also get an awesome fiery shot of a Death Trooper.

Mon Mothma is a former senator responsible for uniting disparate planetary systems who have come under the tyrannical rule of the Galactic Empire. She is sometimes known as 'The Mother of the Rebellion', and was first introduced way back in 1983's Return of the Jedi, where she delivered the pilot debriefing before the raid on the second Death Star. She also had a small role in Revenge of the Sith, »

Star Wars: Saw Gerrera Blows Rogue One Wide Open

24 June 2016 1:38 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Whew! What a week for mostly official Rouge One: A Star Wars Story dispatches! Granted, most of these are from Entertainment Weekly and not Lucasfilm proper, but that doesn’t mean they are any less official. We’ve officially entered the time period where it was silly that we thought Kaytoo Esso was K-250, it’s a more enlightened time.

Even though all the character names and photos are super cool and worthy of individual attention, the main two purposes in the sudden dump of Rogue One info were to make the general public feel better about the widely reported reshoots and to tell everyone that Darth Vader was indeed in this film.

Turns out all the Darth Vader clues the internet had been hunting ended up paying off, and the rumors of a ruthless and frightening Vader’s return to screen ended up being true. Like we summed up for you earlier this week, »

Mon Mothma A Big Part Of "Rogue One"

24 June 2016 11:08 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

One of the big surprises of the teaser trailer for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" was the appearance of a familiar face from "Return of the Jedi" - the Rebel Leader Mon Mothma.

Genevieve O'Reilly, who first played the role ten years earlier in a deleted scene from "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith," reprises it in the new film in what was suspected to be just a cameo. Turns out she has a significantly larger role than that. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy tells EW:

"We actually see quite a bit of her. The Rebel alliance is in disarray. Pretty panicked. Up against it. And she is trying the best she can to provide the leadership, in amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do."

That's not all though, several more photos from the project have been »

This 'Ghostbusters'-'Return of the Jedi' mashup is the perfect viral video

21 June 2016 1:23 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Every once in awhile the perfect viral video rears its glorious head, and today we've got the newest addition to that esteemed canon: this deliriously perfect Ghostbusters-Return of the Jedi mashup by YouTuber Mike Phirman. What would happen if Luke Skywalker encountered the wisecracking supernatural exterminators? It's a straightforward premise that works extraordinarily well, and it's bound to make more than a few viewers ask themselves the oft-echoed question: why didn't I think of that? But the truth is, making a seemingly-easy connection between two distinct entities like this takes a special kind of brain, and Mike Phirman is clearly a genius in the art of the mashup. Enjoy. Luke and Darth Vader Had the Ultimate Father's Day on Twitter

19 June 2016 11:08 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Today just so happens to be Father's Day. It is a day that is meant to honor all dads, even the potentially very flawed ones, like Darth Vader, for example. Being that it is Father's Day and Vader, for what it is worth, is one of the most famous movie dads of all time, Dave Prowse, who played Vader in the costume in Star Wars, decided to send out a Tweet about the holiday. The resulting exchange was priceless.

Prowse took to Twitter this morning bright and early to wish his followers a Happy Father's Day. He also slipped in the hash tag #IAmYourFather, being that it is one of the most famous, and misquoted movie lines of all time and it definitely fits the theme of the day. This could have just been a simple, sweet gesture from a member of the Star Wars universe, but this is Twitter »

Cinemax is in the early stages of developing Brian Michael Bendis comic book “Scarlet” as a series, Robert Doherty inks 3-year deal with CBS and more in Friday’s TV news roundup.

Development

Cinemax is currently developing a TV adaptation of “Scarlet,” based on Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev’s comic of the same name, published under Marvel’s Icon imprint. According to Deadline, Bendis announced, albeit coyly, at the Atx Television Festival in Austin that the property was being developed by HBO, but Variety has confirmed that it will be developed for Cinemax, which is owned by the premium cable network. The comic follows a rebellious protagonist named Scarlet Rue who ends up sparking a new American revolution. Bendis also co-created “Jessica Jones” and “Powers,” both of which have been adapted for TV. Development for “Scarlet” is in the early stages.

Deals

Rob Doherty, creator, executive producer and showrunner of CBS’ “Elementary,” has signed a new three-year deal with CBS Television Studios. He will continue as showrunner on “Elementary,” which is heading into its fifth season, and will supervise new projects for CBS TV. The news was first reported by Deadline.

“Grey’s Anatomy” actors Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens, Jr. and Kevin McKidd have renewed their deals and will return to the ABC drama for the upcoming 13th season. They’ve signed on after star Ellen Pompeo inked her deal to return and Sara Ramirez confirmed her departure from the show.

First Look

Disney Xd and Lego have released the first trailer for “Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures,” which takes place in the period between “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” On June 11 at 8 p.m. on YouTube, Instagram star Zack King will be hosting a “Brick-Building” event where fans can get a sneak peek of the upcoming animated series.

Dates

PBS announced that “The Great British Baking Show” will return for Season 3 on July 1 at 9 p.m. on the network. The competition show, which features amateur bakers vying to be the best all-around baker, will feature returning judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood joined by hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc.
