27th Annual Statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run 

The 27th Annual Statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run began June 5, 2013 at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand. The three-day event, which supports Special Olympics Delaware, will span 160 miles before it ends Friday at the University of Delaware’s stadium, where the Special Olympics Flame of Hope will be delivered to kick off the 2013 Summer Games.

Special Olympics Delaware provides a year-round program of quality sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or cognitive delays.More than 4,000 volunteers work to make this program possible for the more than 3,500 athletes who compete in the games. The organization builds sports skills, confidence, strength, motivation and self-esteem for everyone involved.

Yesterday torch runners started at Lewes, Georgetown and Delmar before trailing to Milford, Harrington, Dover, Smyrna and Odessa.The runners will  continue Friday from state police Troop 9 in Odessa and will proceed to Wilmington police headquarters, where a 1:20 p.m. celebration will be held before commencing the final leg to the University of Delaware.
