Mt. Pleasant, Mich. (Mar. 11, 2016) --- Central Michigan scored the first eight goals of the game and never looked back in a 19-5 victory over Delaware State this afternoon.
CMU improved to 2-2 on the season. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Hornets, who fell to 2-4.
Jocelyne Lemay scored four goals, while Anna Schoonover and Logan Halvorson tallied three each to lead the Chippewas.
Iman Hassan scored three times and Kayla Yurkanin twice to account for the Delaware State goals.
Lemay scored three of Central Michigan’s first eight goals. Her third score gave the Chippewas an 8-0 lead with 8:06 left in the opening period.
Delaware State got on the board when Hassan scored an unassisted goal at the 7:27 mark of the period to cut CMU’s lead to 8-1.
The Chippewas scored twice more in the period to lead 10-1 at the half.
The Hornets scored first in the second period on Hassan’s 16th goal of the season to trim Central Michigan’s lead to 10-2.
Delaware State trailed 11-2 when Yurkanin scored back-to-back goals during a one-minute-28 second span of the second period to pull the Hornets to within 11-4.
Central Michigan was ahead 13-4 when Hassan tallied her third goal of the contest with 16:47 left to play.
Hassan leads DSU with 17 goals and 23 points this season. She has tallied three or more goals in four of the Hornets’ six games. Yurkanin is second on the team with 10 goals and 13 points.
The Hornets remain in the Wolverine State for their next contest on Sunday at Detroit Mercy.
