Tamron is showing off two brand new lenses at CP+ this year - the SP 85mm F1.8 Di VC USD (shown here) and SP 90mm F2.8 Di VC USD 1:1 Macro. The 'SP' in the model names stands for 'Super Performance' - a designation that Tamron reserves for its high-end optics. We headed to the Tamron booth today and got our hands on the new lenses, and Tamron's upcoming TAP-in Console.

Just bought a near new Canon 85 1.8 for $270. Why would I concern myself buying third party lenses when they become obsolete on next generation cameras...

I think that's part of the reason Tamron and Sigma are releasing their USB docks. So you can update the lens firmware so that a generation change won't limit the functionality of your lens. I really do think its a pretty sweet solution to consumer concerns with third party lenses. I hope other lens makers follow the trend, and that it doesn't turn into a big patent lawsuit.

And really, you bought a lens that's more than 20 years old so that you wouldn't end up with something obsolete?

Haha, fair enough. I really do wish they'd update it. It looks like all of their newer designs are pretty well regarded. But at it's current price and as it's still a decent seller, I doubt there's much incentive.

The SP lineup isn't priced to compete with the standard Canon USM system. Due to their makeup, they're aiming quite a bit higher: towards L series output. Minus the aperture ratio, the 85mm f/1.8 VC USD should easily match (or even exceed) L and N and ART level characteristics. The spec of "85mm f/1.8" doesn't say anything about the performance or character of a lens other than its focal length and aperture ratio. It doesn't guarantee quality of bokeh, minimum object distance, acuity, construction, speed or accuracy of focus... There is more than enough incentive to purchase a better lens even if the two core recognizable factors happen to be similar. There many, many other reasons why someone would want one over the other. In this case, just based on the MTF charts alone, the only reason to go with the current Canon 85mm f/1.8 is two fold: a.) it is currently available and b.) it is cheaper. Otherwise it's not by any means the better lens.

Also the myth that next generation cameras obsolete third party lenses is simply false. While there may or may not be some firmware inconsistencies for third party manufacturers, the firmware is easily updated either at home or at the service center with minimal turn times. What "obsoletes" a lens is, more commonly, resolution of the sensor or the mechanisms used to focus. This is a universal trait and all lenses must deal with this in time. Hence EF lenses from the 1990s simply don't perform as well on modern sensors as those in the Gen II category of today. They need to be replaced, if we're being honest, and if the photographer wants to get the most out of their sensors. At least the two major third party manufacturers are producing for tomorrows sensors, today, with nearly every new release, and at typically better price points than their competition. Nothing obsolete about that.

@JaredTarzan, what comparisson charts is your opinion based on? The EF 85/1.8 is tack sharp at 1.8 today and to answer your question as to what would obsolete the tamron lens would likely be the ef 85/1.8 mk2. I bet it will focus faster and perform better on the charts... and would not require silly upgrade software which one needs to figure out how to use.

Anyhow, in real world when we are not shooting charts but being used for what this lens is meant for, which is generally portraits the old 1990 lens will perform just as good as the tamron and that's used at $250-300 is a bargain...

I think we can all agree that a Sigma ART F/1.4 is going to be here eventually, most likely before the end of 2016. It's almost certain that the Sigma lens won't have stabilization, which gives this Tamron a niche.

While a similar design to the previous VC version the following have been upgraded: coatings both internal and front elements, significantly better external construction (now considered splashproof), all internal movement (no extra barrel extension during use), VC now has an accelerometer to enable greater stability, now offering 3.5 stops of range at all focal distances, much improved USD autofocus motor (exquisitely fast even from closest focusing distance to infinity), electromagnetic aperture control for Nikon mount, and full use of the forthcoming TAP console that allows the user the ability to program several functioning parameters within the lens (including vibration compensation and limiter switch preferences). It's a significant upgrade in all directions.

I am worrying with these two Tamron lenses and other existing 85mm lenses on the market (including Sigma current 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM), they make it even more difficult for Sigma to release an even better 85mm F1.4 Art to this increasingly crowded 85mm segment.

To me the thing is: why worry about Sigma if Tamron can produce an extraordinary optic? Why not own both brands? There's hardly enough difference between 1.4 and 1.8 to concern ourselves with where modern sensors are concerned and, if Tamron is truly providing anywhere near 3.5 stops of stabilization (an option Sigma is not likely to provide, regardless, judging from the rest of the ART lineup), the 2/3 theoretical stop difference (transmission notwithstanding) will make purchasing a more expensive 1.4 a rather moot point. Bokeh from the recent SP offerings has been outstanding, as well, so that particular argument becomes ever more abstract.

Why worry about one brand if another is doing well? It's a point of distinction that someone would research well enough to note that there are no superior brands, just superior products within brands. Owning the best of the lot would be amazing, no matter who's on the label.

While not an answer to my question (which was, really, what happens when the better output comes from a lens not of the brand you're waiting on? For instance: the ART 35 has been bested in several tests by the SP 35, making the idea of larger aperture moot. If one lens outperforms the other, isn't that what matters?), the real basis is that both are producing lenses that are setting new standards. I'd own the ART 50 over the SP 45 but Tamron's SP 70-200 VC is superior to the Sigma 70-200. Maintaining total loyalty to either one costs opportunities to create better images. Disavowing another brand due to religious fervor (forum standard!) is a common malpractice.

Tamron is not your usual service center, as they maintain an average turn time of 3 days once a lens has been received by the tech. Total turn time rarely exceeds 7-10 days from start of ship by the customer, to receipt of the fully updated/repaired product by the customer on the back side. Quite simply best in the industry.

I'd love to hear impressions on AF speed, since that would be the Achilles Heel of the otherwise excellent Nikkor.

Having had my full production sample for 24hrs, now, and having had it not just in my hands but in the hands of several other highly experienced pros I can tell you: it's ridiculously fast for a macro. I am fairly certain it's the fastest macro I've tested, including the L IS USM.

Probably won't receive my 85mm until mid-late March (unless I get surprised at WPPI and am allowed to take one home then, which is highly unlikely) but I'll be more than happy to report on it when I have it! I have begun posting "fun" samples from the 90mm to my facebook wall for the time being. Hey Tamron, why don't you just blow every nature photographers mind with a 300mm f4.5 1:1 macro VC lens with a tilt feature? Can you say 2ft. minimum working distance? Listen up Sigma and Tokina.

I don't believe such lens will ever happen. Maximum fl for tilt anyone would manufacture I think would be 90mm, and I'm not sure tamron is willing to do it. Let's see if they get there regular 24 - 35 tilts firsts, I'd much rather have something from tamron or sigma , than the plasticky samyang .. which apparently is also lacking in contrast in comparison to nikon pc-e

You are probably right about the maximum fl for a tilt lense being 90mm. So think about this. Have a camera with software built in to power focus a telephoto macro to create a multi-frame focus stack and combine it in-camera to output a RAW file. Am I dreaming?

I think the "new" firmware update for olympus em-1 and em-5m2 allows them to do that, focus stack in-camera. I'm not sure if the output is raw or jpg

Yay for electromagnetic aperture control on Nikon cameras. On the other hand I wouldn't mind less lens barrel play to begin with, so a mechanical lever isn't necessarily a problem. Unfortunately there usually is play between lens and body, so the electromagnetic version should be more precise.

Let's see if the focus motor causes sensor noise, like with the 24-70 and 70-200 zooms.

All the latest SP releases are also made in Japan. The "Designed in Japan" addition is so that everyone knows it's completely home grown. The SP 15-30 2.8 VC, SP 24-70 2.8 VC, SP 70-200 2.8 VC, SP 35 1.8 VC, SP 45 1.8 VC, SP 90 Macro 2.8 VC, SP 85 1.8 VC, SP 180 Macro 3.5, and SP 28-75 2.8 are all made in Japan.

There's no IQ benefit buying the 90mm macro
New lens.
The older lens IQ will be the exact same i.e. No optical advantage
So why buy this new lens over the older 90mm macro

The 90 is Tamron's baby. They update it whenever new tech is devised. Now it is the new look, the weather-sealing, the new tap-in devise. Enough new stuff for Tamron to redo their classic. Whether it is optically improved or not remains to be seen. It seems to be a first lens for folks coming to Tamron so they want it to represent. I am disappointed they choose not to update outliers like the 180 or the 10-24. A DX ultrawide with the sp treatment would be awesome.

To know the answer you have to see the specs. What you want to know is reproduction ratio. 1:1 is ''true'' macro. Some Tamron lenses have 1:3 reproduction ratio, or 0.33x max magnification. When they call such lenses ''macro'' they mean those lenses have better magnification than rival lenses of similar focal lengths.

Tamron makes three true macro lenses: 60mm f 2, 90mm f 2.8 (several versions), and 180 f 3.5. All of the others just offer closer focusing and/or higher magnification as Sacred noted. The older 70-300 is called macro but the newer 70-300 vc lost that designation because it has weaker magnification than the older lens.

The newer 70-300 is also significantly sharper than the older one, is it not? Also, sigma has pretty good macro lenses too, I have a older (non-OS) model 180mm f3.5 macro lens. Other than being a bit big, it's pretty good lens. I got it used cheap couple of years ago, 600+ euro with a 2x TC. A deal I couldn't pass on, seeing how expensive the OS model is.

All I'm hoping is that someone would make a m43 alternative with same equiv fl, since anything shorter feels like a compromise when it comes to insect work.. but I would value smaller size too, so I'd love some 90mm macro on a m43 (180 equiv)

I'd argue there is already is a difference between sigma 150 and sigma 180mm, so a 120mm equiv (olympus's 60 macro) and 180 would be even bigger gap.

Indeed, we all have our wishes. Instead of waiting for a Tamron 180 redo that is unlikely to come, I am bidding on a used one. I agree, 180mm would be highly desirable in any format and is significantly different from 120. And, yes, the new 70-300 is significantly sharper than the old one by all reports and I find its performance at 300mm at the minimum focus distance just fine. So, no complaints. If I want macro, I have a Sigma 70 2.8.

The real test will be in seeing how this lens compares in terms of sharpness(edge to edge), CA and bokeh quality.
That said, I hope it's a winner. The 85mm lens competition seems very aggressive this year.

The 90mm macro's minimum focusing distance of 13.9cm/5.5in seems to be measured from the tip of the lens, not from the focal plane. http://www.tamron-usa.com/F017special/index.html says that the minimum object distance is 0.3m (11.8 in).

Is this kind of spec trickery common or did I just misunderstand something? I've just recently become macro-curious.

That 13.9cm is the working distance i.e. when you are the shortest focusing distance of the lens(30cm in case of this lens) the distace of subject from the front of the length. There is no trickery of specs going on. Working distace is a crucial(for shy bugs and dangerous animals) parameter when doing macro photography. You can easily calculate working distance of the lens from specification table. Woking distace=Minimum focusing distace-(Flange distance+Length of the lens).

I saw sample images of the 85 f/1.8 VC at Tamron's site and I was very impressed by them. It produces very nice bokeh and it's sharp. I have a Nikon 85 f/1.8 G but this new Tamron beats the Nikon in terms of bokeh and sharpness.

The bokeh of the cheaper Nikon f/1.8G lenses isn't always the best and can look busy (at least i can see that with my 50mm f/1.8G). That's why you need to buy the more expensive f/1.4G lenses if you want to have a smoother bokeh.

The screen shot in http://www.tamron-usa.com/F017special/ seems to say both "Made in Japan" and "Designed in Japan". It doesn't mean, though, that the mass production was done in Japan.

The difference is how much you pay your employees and therefore how much they care about their job, how much you invest in quality control and inspecting the product as quickly as possible or making sure everything is according to the specs, or even to the best ability of the used equipment and operator skill.

Chances are loyal employees which can regularly discuss things with the CEO (like Sigma nowadays) and work there for generations do better job than outsourcing the job to remote factory with mere workers, who have little opportunity to provide feedback.

Great statement. I don't know if consumers are very aware of that good quality control and integrity to fullfill those requirements costs money which you need to pay for a good manufactured product. It would be great if companies would return to value their employees more than shareholder value.

iPhones are made in China.

What matters is the process, not where it's made; further, how much a person makes is important relative to where they live and work, not according to some global measurement. Employees making Tamron lenses are likely paid well for there market, regardless of where their factories are located.

Sony A7 is having IBIS (in-body stabilization). As a mirrorless camera their sensors don't use a phase detect Autofocus system, therefore they don't need TAP-in.

Regardless if a camera is having IBIS or in-lens stabilization... Nobody will care about that in your photos... and it is still possible to use a camera with a tripod (that will avoid mirror slapping blur too on high resolution DSLR cameras). I prefer to use a camera system that offers good lenses and is well established on the market instead of making a decision based on a certain camera feature.

Jorge: These aren't made for E-mount but the A7ii, A7ri do have phase detect and a lens like this might be excellent for the new capabilities to use the camera's phase detect AF with the mirrorless LA-EA3. If you chose super slow contrast detect then you might as well focus manually. The A7 and A7r and A7s do not have (much) phase detect AF and neither do they have IBIS so your comment is much perplexing.

Well i am not much into Sony. Probably their sensor is having a mix of Contrast/Phase-Detect Autofocus system and i was thinking like "mirrorless" is not dealing with those AF-Adjustment issues others are having with a DSLR.

I shoot an a7II and a6000 with na la-ea3. No IBIS for the a6000. Sure a mount has IBIS, but even Sigma still includes OS.

A reskin would be fine, especially if it were made compatible with their dock; though to be frank, when Sigma or Tamron lenses miss, it's usually variable, i.e. it misses differently each time.

And they can leave the optics alone; at best, they can speed up the AF and work on their signature onion ring bokeh!

I think a 70-200 would be better idea to improve than 24-70. If they manage to make one without focus breathing (the one that would behave like a 70-200 in close focus, not like the current third parties and the nikon m2 that behaves like a 60-130 in close focus), I'm pretty sure anyone with brain would buy the said tamron lens instead of nikon one (and maybe there will be some canon users joining it too, just not as dramatic effect as it would have within nikon users)

Nikon 85 f1.8, while touted to be sharp, actually suffers from a lot of AF inconsistencies on my D810 body. I wonder if it's something that can be improved upon, and whether tamron has found a solution for that.

My Nikon 85/1.4G came with a decentering defect. Fixed under warranty. But overall not a sharp lens. Will sell when Sigma releases the 85/1.4 Art.

My Nikon 85mm 1.8 G on D750 is just awesome performer. I would like to have VC but can't justify only because of that.

If you shoot portrait with this lens you mostly shoot above 1/125 to avoid motion blur of the person. At this shutter speed a stabilization is useless.

You should just send your lenses along with the camera body to Nikon to adjust the misalignment of auto focus inconsistencies. I have heard that the f/1.4 version can introduce a focus shift if used wide opened.

PS: I don't know if camera users are aware that a slight back/front movement of the photographer is already enough to be out of focus with f/1.8 and f/1.4 lenses.

You don't have problems with mirror slapping blur at this shutter speed if you want to take advantage of the full sensor resolution? At least with a telephoto lens like the 70-200mm i have experienced that even on a tripod you can't avoid to use "mirror lock-up" on slower shutter speed, otherwise the image is slightly blurred with 100% magnification.

VC/IS isn't only for slow shutter speeds. It stabilizes image in viewfinder for more accurate composition, easier focusing (either by hand or for the AF module) and stable subject metering. Current fast rate accelerometers and gyroscopes can keep with with several hundreds of a second, so even there can be visible improvements, depending on the lens model and your technique. Don't forget that with high resolution sensors 1 pixel blur is very easy to make even with shorter focal lengths.

Tamron's VC stabilizes image on viewfinder, whilst I think the Nikon's VR doesn't have as profound effect. I love the Tamron's VC

@ybizzle: Any idea how old the Canon EF 85 f/1.8 is? You simply cannot compare it with the new Tamron. Now, which Sigma or Tamron lens "beats" the, say, 70-200 f/2.8 II from Canon or Nikon, all elements considered?! And this is just an example - do you want to discuss the 14-24 and 11-24 as well?

I'd say none of the lenses beats canon's 70-200 m2 because it's the only true 70-200 even in close focus, whilst the nikon m2 and third party lenses have more focus breathing (nikon m2 behaving like a 60-130 in close focus). The reason I'd value tamron higher over nikon is that the price is cheaper, yet performance is very much the same / better ? Matt Granger has tested them, so I guess nikon is probably tiny bit tougher.. but not something even all the pros would accept as excuse for 1200 euro price difference

How fast are we talking - the 45 has been pretty consistent with focus for me, but it's pretty darn slow. It can't track worth anything (the micro-screw STM lenses like the 40 & 50 do a much better job of tracking as an example.)

That's pretty rough. Some have reported tracking success in non-strenuous situations, but I definitely hope that the 85/1.8 VC at least is sped up a bit. Given that it doesn't have the same macro function as the shorter lenses and thus likely not a long focus throw, it might be a bit sped up in comparison.

The new USD motor in the SP 90mm Macro is significantly faster than either the 35mm or the 45mm (though, to be fair, those are at least consistently accurate... something I can't say for many, many bright primes)... but the 90 is a significant improvement. Night and day.

I suspect it will... Tamron, if anything, moves all features in a parallel suit. When one gets the upgrade, everything from that point on tends to do so, as well. And to be clear: the new SP 90 is, if not the fastest focusing macro lens I've ever tested, is in the top two. Both the stores that have played with it agree: astonishing performance.

Thanks again. I don't mind it on the 45 because of the use I put it to, but my canon 85 & 135 are my perfect lenses for my daughter doing gymnastics and ballet classes. I'd like something that upgrades the IQ of the 85 (and I don't mind the size increase) but the AF needs to be fast.
