Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II boasts faster performance and improved ergonomics

IMO opinion there was no point in the g5x and g9x. The G7X was the only one they needed. Now that is has decent RAW continuous shooting, there is no reason to get the others.

I wonder if there were people asking same about 1080p when they've used to Hi8...

About portrait, it is certainly not best since it is limited in DOF management, but it is totally good enough for me in lots of situations.

Actually, that was one thing that appealed to me- it IS one of the best pocketable cameras for DOF control. The LX100 beats it at shorter EFLs and the G1X because it has a longer EFL, but if you want a little DOF control in your pocket, it's as good as anything available. A little extra help from background defocus or in pp and you can certainly get good results in the right situations.

Thanks for your time & also for giving me a good laugh. The way you have focused on trivialities (spelling mistakes) in my posts, speaks about your priorities. I have used all sorts of cameras, been a reviewer, interacted with marriage photographers. Afterall it is your money. I can show red flag, but if someone wants to ignore, it is there choice. Trust me. Once you start shooting with EVF, you won't ever go for a camera without EVF. It is NOT the other way round. EVF does not exclude LCD, in case you want to shoot with it. It enables you to have stable posture, offers privacy of composition. Did you ever find any professional photographer shooting with holding camera at arms length? Why don't you want to give yourself the best chance? Peace.

ajay, "A photographor's top priority is to get best possible image every time", then "a photographer" would not be considering any 1" sensor camera at all. Step off.

@JackM It is 'Top Priority', not the only one. Budget may be a constraint. So largest possible sensor, widest aperture lens, accurate EVF, Fast operation, Good battery life, tilt LCD, IS, Wi-Fi, small size, any other features. In that ORDER for me.

Yes it's just YOUR opinion, which doesn't seem to be shared by anyone else on here, and not some immutable law of nature.

EVF is so overrated, a touchscreen with good autofocus is much better in 95% of situations. You can't get overhead or low shots with an EVF. You can't get candid shots with an EVF, because everyone knows when you're taking a photo. The only time you need an EVF is if you're taking really close, detailed, manual focus, tripod macro shots. Even in situations with bright sunlight behind you, you don't need an EVF. In such situations, your subject is lit with fantastic sunlight. Autofocus won't be a problem. If you can't compose using your imagination in such a situation, well you lack the vision to compose well in the first place.

BTW, it is as same as Pana FZ1000 vs SONY RX10 as FZ1000 "Compromises to achieve a more powerful zoom".

One more thing about the lens, I'm not saying SONY RX100.M3/M4's lens is the best in small P&S, but SONY has *patent* for RX100.M3 and M4's lens design.

@Mike FL... The FZ1000 compromises quality only in the zoom range beyond what the RX10 even offers, so it's still win/win for the Panny, which is sharper all around.

The G7x compromises at 24mm, which is what people use most, and both cameras offer.

I'd prefer your grip on this camera vs the crap that's on there. I love your grip on my XZ-1. It's been in there since 2011 hasn't moved or come off!

I don't really put it on Canon to make a "tiltable" flash, since the ones that can are more of a "hack' than a feature- I don't think any manufacturers suggest using the flashes like that, or advertise them as such.

That said, tilting the flash worked alright on my m4/3 cam I suppose, but is it really practical with such a small flash anyway? I would rather have nice flash metering- some of my cameras just blow out everything like crazy with flash, but can sometimes get decent results by dialing it back a bit.

You've got it backward- if my camera had better call quality than my phone, I would complain about that too!

J5 with lens is 16.8 mm greater in depth and slower kit lens BUT is $200 less and lens is interchangeable

That lens doesn't have a comperable zoom range.

That's the compromise. Slightly less zoom range, slower glass BUT $200 price advantage and flexibility when it comes to upgrading either glass or sensor down the road.

I don't know where you get $799. J5 is listed on Amazon at $499. That's about 30% lower price than G7XII.

On the zoom you are looking 27-81 mm versus 28-100 mm (equivalency). If you want to get more zoom on the J5 there are a range of options that will go all the way to 810 mm. On the G7XII there is no way to upgrade anything. The whole thing is disposable when technology changes.

Twin deal at $650 it pretty close to the suggested retail for the G7XII. The twin lens kit would give you equivalent coverage from 27-300 mm which is 300% more than the G7XII. The extra reach sometimes come in handy when you just can't get close to certain subjects.

As far as pocketability is concerned both cameras will need a pouch to carry around as both are too big and heavy to fit in a pocket without sporting a big bulge.

For indoor usage one can use ISO 800, 1600 or better yet an off body bounce flash.

Nope. Looks like you never owned one of these so you have no idea what you're talking about. The G7 X isn't as tiny as the "jeans pocketable" G9 X, but you can easily fit it into any jacket/sweater/cargo pocket.

The RX100 easily fits in slacks pockets, so unless you are a hipster-skinny jeans kind of person, the G7X will as well. There is no equivalent Nikon 1 lens you can say that about, especially if you are trying to get one as fast as and with close to the same focal range as the G7's.

The 1 system doesn't come close to f1.8 24mm. Forget zooming. A 10mm f2.8 pancake is not nearly as wide and not nearly as fast. A 9mm f1.8 prime from Nikon would cost as much as the G7x on it's own and wouldn't be small enough anyway.

It depends how often you think using wide angle wide open is applicable in your photography. For me, not so much. Having the ability to use 300 mm (equiv.) telephoto is more useful for my needs.

First you bring up the 10-30 lens as an example of how the Nikon is superior, and now you're talking about 300mm lenses. Regardless, you're not going to fit that telephoto lens in any pocket.

The J5 is superior if you want to own several lenses and don't mind the added expense (does Nikon even have a zoom lens that goes f1.8 to f2.8???) and bulk of doing so, but the Canon is superior if you want a single camera with a 1" sensor, fast and great zoom range, in a pocketable size.

Been there done that with compact zoom cameras. "Pocketability" selling point sounds good in theory.

Been there and done that with an S90 and S100. The pocketibility was great in practice.

to be fair it seems they can no match the Rx100 mk3 in both speed and image quality. But they still can't exceed it. The Sony still has the EVF.

two ways to look at this.
1.The Rx100 mk3 finally has some decent competition the G7x was just too damn slow(1fps in raw is a joke)
2. Canon is late...... again.....

Like most everyone else in the industry, camera manufacturers and review sites included, BCN uses the term "compact camera" to mean "fixed-lens camera".

No, just like the shipment data from CIPA, the sales data from BCN distinguishes only between compacts (fixed-lens cameras), mirrorless ILCs and DSLRs. They don't break out numbers for entry-level, prosumer etc.

Yes, that's all true. But if we stick to the numbers for Japan, we have no reason to believe that the 30% market share that Canon has is mostly cheap P&S models, and that things would look dramatically different, if we restricted the numbers to only prosumer models. Canon doesn't have that many cheap compacts in their line-up anymore, they have a few but so does Sony and Panasonic.

Well, I was looking at the current line-up as presented on the Canon website (in Europe), and comparing it with how it used to look a few years ago. They now offer 6 G, 8 SX, 2 N, 3 IXUS (ELPH in the US) and 1 D model. The cheap A series is discontinued since a couple of years back.

But yeah, Canon might have released more P&S models than Sony and Panasonic, but we still don't know the exact composition of their respective market shares.
