New wave photographers and their outlook on photography - your take?

So i have been using Instagram for a few years now and as you may know, they have frequent Insta-meets in each city so i decided to go check it out.

Things i have observed:
- 90% shot by phone only
- a 70% didnt seem to have any basic understanding of photography
- i didnt ask specifically but it has also appeared that about half of them have never used a photo camera and consider cameras obsolete. Their concept of photography was to simply push the release button on their phone.
- having a certain amount of followers on IG seemed very important and the more followers they had, the more they actually felt sincerely important

At first i thought that i simply ran into a very odd group of people but as it turns out (after speaking to people in other cities), this is real.
I dont wanna sh*t on anybody because in the end, the result matters but when you see someone who believes that photography is only hitting the release button on their phone, i do wonder:
Is this the future of photography?
