“We Needed the Fresh Urine of a Nanny Goat in Heat”: Dp Jarin Blaschke on The Witch

3 March 2016 6:00 AM, PST | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

In the midst of my opening day viewing of The Witch, the screen went black. It wasn’t unexpected considering the multitude of perfectly timed ellipses that punctuate director Robert Eggers’ 17th century tale of a devout Christian family torn asunder. And this particular ellipsis seemed opportunely placed – coming just as the film’s hypothetical dread morphed into tangible terror. But this time, the darkness persisted. The theater’s projector bulb had burned out. Of course, the audience didn’t know that yet. At any other screening, the reaction would’ve been instantaneous. My fellow moviegoers and I would’ve turned to the projector and […] »

Nida grad Devon Terrell to play young Barack Obama

2 March 2016 5:39 PM, PST | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

Devon Terrell.

Nida graduate Devon Terrell will play a young Barack Obama in Barry, an independent feature to be directed by Vikram Gandhi, a former Vice correspondent who made the documentary Kumare.

The film will be set in 1981 in New York City, while Obama was attending Columbia University as a 20 year-old, reports THR.

Terrell was cast as the lead in Steve McQueen's HBO show Codes of Conduct, and despite the series being scrapped, that plum booking has no doubt opened many doors.

He'll star in Barry alongside another much-buzzed young actor, The Witch's Anya Taylor-Joy, with a shoot planned for late April.

The script was written by Adam Mansbach, best known as the author of adult children's book Go the F*** to Sleep.

Terrell is repped by CAA in the U.S. and Imc in Australia. »

'The Witch 2' Isn't Happening, Why Not?

2 March 2016 7:41 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Sorry, fans of The Witch. The director behind one of the most original horror movies in years is not interested in rehashing his thriller for a sequel. While most scary movies get a follow-up once they hit big with an audience, it doesn't sound like that is happening here. Despite The Witch becoming somewhat of a phenomenon.

Both critically acclaimed and a box office hit, The Witch has a rich mythology that could sustain a number of sequels. But writer and director Robert Eggers has no interest in going down that well-trod road. This tale of a tormented Puritan family and their goat Black Phillip has already grossed $16 million, which is a lot for a small indie like this. And The Witch 2 would surely be an even bigger hit as The Witch gains more of an audience on the home market and VOD. But there will not be a Witch »

2 March 2016 12:08 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Devon Terrell has been cast as a young Barack Obama in the planned biographical film Barry, so reports The Hollywood Reporter. The movie will be set in 1981, and will also feature the talents of Anya Taylor-Joy, who can currently be seen in the horror movie The Witch.

Barry explores the time when Obama (Terrell) was a college student in New York City and forged key relationships, including with a fellow student (Taylor-Joy).

Vikram Gandhi will direct the film, which expected to start shooting next month. Black Bear Pictures are behind the film, the company that brought the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game to screens a couple of years back.

Adam Mansbach wrote the script.

Robert Eggers Has Zero Interest in Making a Witch Sequel

Writer/director Robert Eggers’ atmospheric outing The Witch ranks as one of the strongest horror flicks in recent memory. In this guy’s humble opinion, it practically begs for repeat viewings. And while some fans would love to see the filmmaker continue… Continue Reading →

Why The Scariest Movie Of The Year Won't Get A Sequel, According To The Director

1 March 2016 3:45 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It took a while for first time director Robert Eggers. Sundance darling horror film The Witch to make it to the rest of us, but for fans of the genre, the slow-burn, tension filled movie was well worth the wait. An exercise in constantly amplifying pressure and terror, The Witch will likely go down as one of the scariest horror films in recent years, if not all time. It won.t, however, follow one pattern for the genre, as there will be no sequel, because, as Eggers says, he doesn.t want to know what.s next. Distributor A24 gave The Witch a wide release a few weeks ago, and was rewarded with their biggest opening ever, not to mention an endoresement from the Satanic Temple. It took more than a year to drop after its Sundance premiere, but that just gave Robert Eggers more time to stump for it »

Young Barack Obama Biopic Barry Finds Leading Stars

1 March 2016 2:16 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Vikram Gandhi’s independent feature Barry has today nabbed its two leading stars, with The Hollywood Reporter bringing word that Devon Terrell has been cast to play a younger version of Barack Obama.

Situated long before Obama made American history by becoming the President of the United States, Gandhi’s movies places a laser focus on his formative years as a New York college student in the early ’80s, where he forged a relationship with a fellow student.

Fresh off her turn in Robert Eggers’ blood-curdling horror flick The Witch, THR notes that it is Anya Taylor-Joy that will star opposite Terrell in the drama, though there’s little-to-no information regarding plot beyond the fact that Obama’s encounter with Taylor-Joy’s character is described as a fateful one. Don’t expect a sequel to ‘The Witch’, says director Eggers

1 March 2016 8:32 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

While we saw and reviewed the excellent horror movie The Witch a considerable amount of time ago at the London Film Festival, the film has only just come out in the Us, and doesn’t debut in the UK for another couple of weeks. There’s some great buzz around the unsettling horror film, and rightly so, and thoughts are already turning towards potential sequels. Well, it seems that the film’s celebrated writer and director Robert Eggers isn’t keen on the idea. At all.

Eggers spoke with EW Radio’s Entertainment Weirdly show; “I think I’m stealing the words from another director I cannot place, but if I wanted to know what happens after the last shot of the film, I would have made a longer movie.”

We reported earlier this past week that Eggers has now turned his attention to other projects, including a major TV »

The Witch helmer Robert Eggers to write and direct Rasputin miniseries

28 February 2016 6:30 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Robert Eggers, the filmmaker behind the acclaimed horror film The Witch, is set to bring the story of Rasputin to the small screen, signing on to write and direct a miniseries based upon the life of the Russian mystic.

Deadline is reporting that the series will consist of six to eight episodes and “will cover Rasputin’s origins in Siberia to his rise to power and bloody death in St. Petersburg.”

In addition to the Rasputin project, Eggers is also attached to a remake of the 1922 horror classic Nosferatu for Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8, as well as medieval film The Knight.

‘The Witch’ Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke on the Film’s Natural-Light Gloom

26 February 2016 3:25 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Everyone’s talking about “The Witch.” It’s hard not to understand why when the film, which first debuted at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and tells the story of a family plagued by evil in early 17th-century New England, is picking up splashy endorsements from the Satanic Temple. The brooding, creepy atmosphere conjured by director Robert Eggers owes plenty to the design and photography, the latter courtesy of lenser Jarin Blaschke. Natural light and plenty of gloom give way to a textured film as beautiful as it is unsettling to observe.

I’d like to start out by hearing a little about your background. I know you’ve done extensive work in short films, but how did you first come to the gig? Did you go to film school? Were you into photography at an early age?

Listen to Mark Korven’s Frightening Full Score For ‘The Witch’

26 February 2016 1:28 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Judging from the slate of new releases this weekend, one’s time would be far greater spent checking out Robert EggersThe Witch, a frightfully entertaining horror tale. Whether you saw it last weekend or plan to catch it soon, you’ll certainly want to give Mark Korven‘s terrifying score another spin and it’s now finally available to listen to in full.

“We both wanted to keep things quite minimal, and keep any human imperfections in the score. The score is tense and dissonant, but there’s also a certain fragility there, which reflects these people living on the edge of existence,” he tells Bloody Disgusting. ” The claustrophobic feeling was really something that Robert was shooting for. He wanted the film to just lay on top of people like a 90 minute puritan nightmare. I think he said once that in order for it to be horror, it had to be horrifying. »

The Witch, “Indie Arthouse Horror” And Our Obsession With Overclassification

26 February 2016 10:21 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

My intentions with this piece were to emphatically praise the success of Robert EggersThe Witch, but, I’ve since been distracted by another proverbial dick-measuring competition between horror fans over who is “most legit.”

Frankly, I don’t get it. The genre has a skewed enough perception from outside parties who don’t understand horror’s luminous draw – why do we need all this inner-genre drama? The Witch, the latest genre-bending(?) film to display vein-popping restraint, has inevitably brought with it another landslide of thinkpieces, baffling opinions, and general fuckery  – ideals that still pollute my Twitter feed. Days later.

Guess it’s my turn then, eh?

First off, a booming round of applause to the guys and gals over at A24. After purchasing The Witch (which, yes, I Loved) out of Sundance for a modest (and fair) $1 million, this puritanical period nightmare scared up $8.6 – $8.8 million (depending on your source) in its opening weekend. »

The Movies That Changed My Life: ‘The Witch’ Director Robert Eggers

26 February 2016 9:07 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

After the recent one-two (three and four) punch of “It Follows,” “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” “The Babadook,” and “Goodnight Mommy,” the chilling swell of arthouse horror has been hitting a crescendo of late (sorry, Bret Easton Ellis). But capturing the arty horror zeitgeist like no other is “The Witch,” the feature-length debut of filmmaker Robert Eggers which earned A24 Films their biggest opening ever. A big smash out of Sundance Film Festival last year where the film won Eggers the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic category, “The Witch” follows a 17th century Puritan family excommunicated from their village who, when forced to fend for themselves, encounter forces of evil in the woods beyond their New England farm. And “The Witch” is sensational (read our review), the modern heir apparent to “The Shining,” and a movie that seemingly mixes the unnerving chill and cinematic vision of Stanley Kubrick, »
