‘The Dog,’ ‘The Taking of Deborah Logan’ and ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ Are Three Kinds of Fantastic

4 November 2014 7:00 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: 50th Anniversary A dapper snowman (voiced by Burl Ives) shares a tale about a Christmas that almost wasn’t and the plucky little reindeer who saved the day. Sounds simple, but the adventure that brings Rudolph from his beleaguered youth through his adventures with misfit toys, a bumbling snow monster, an elf with dental aspirations and a surly ginger named Yukon Cornelius. Also, love. He has an adventure featuring love. Sure, Halloween just ended and we’re still a few weeks away from Thanksgiving, but does that mean we can’t start seeking out Christmas specials? Okay, yes, it does, but that hasn’t stopped the onslaught of holiday-themed releases from hitting DVD today. While most of them are easily ignored this 1964 classic deserves far more respect. This »

Three New Found Footage Films Are Hitting VOD, But Only One and a Half Deliver the Goods

3 November 2014 7:00 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Blah, blah, blah, found footage movies suck. Okay, now that that (far too frequently correct) generalization is out of the way let’s take a look at three new horror titles available this week on VOD. Yes, they’re all found footage films, but there’s a twist… only one of them sucks. Another is mediocre at best, and the third? Well it just might be one of the year’s best horror movies. Hangar 10 follows a trio of friends who head into a British forest to investigate search for gold but get caught up in strange events that appear to echo a UFO sighting there 33 years prior. Exists follows a group of friends who head into an East Texas forest for some deep woods shenanigans but unintentionally piss off Bigfoot along the way. The Taking of Deborah Logan does not involve aliens, Bigfoot or the woods, but it does feature a harrowing look at the pain »

Straight-to-dvd distribution is usually a pretty good indication that a horror movie isn't worth your time, but “The Taking of Deborah Logan” — produced by Bryan Singer and currently streaming on Netflix — is one of the finer exceptions. See photos: 9 Most Popular Hollywood-Themed Halloween Costumes: From ‘Frozen’ to ‘Captain America’ (Photos) The found-footage horror film that tracks the possession of the eponymous character, played by 67-year-old soap opera actress Jill Larson (“All My Children”) with demonic intensity, succeeds in delivering the thrills and chills the genre is supposed to offer after opening on a unique premise: A Ph.D. student is making. »

Spooky Trailer and Clip for The Taking Of Deborah Logan

25 October 2014 6:00 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Here a trailer and clip from a creepy looking horror film called The Taking of Deborah Logan. I haven't heard of this film until recently, but it's one that I plan on checking out in the near future. It comes from producer Adam Robitel, who wrote and directed the film. He's also the producer of films such as X-Men, and my favorite Halloween horror movie ever, Trick 'r Treat. Here's the synopsis:

Mia Medina (Michelle Ang) has finally found the perfect subject for her PhD thesis film on Alzheimer’s Disease. For the next several months, cameras will record the everyday life of mother Deborah Logan (Jill Larson) and her daughter Sarah (Anne Ramsay). But as the days progress, strange things beginning to happen around Deborah that are not consistent with any findings about Alzheimer’s.

It becomes apparent that there’s something besides Alzheimer’s that has taken control of Deborah’s life. »

8 September 2014 4:11 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.

On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production »
