AFI Fest Adds Global Cinema to Starry Awards Contenders

10 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If you think AFI Fest exists just as a hometown awards-season exercise, think again.

The festival, which runs Nov. 10-17 at Los Angeles’ Tcl Chinese Theatre, is celebrating its 30th edition this year and has grown into an increasingly diverse mix of world and local premieres that focus on new auteurs, the best of global cinema, and, of course, potential Oscar players.

“We are unique in that we are at the end of the year,” says festival director Jacqueline Lyanga. “Our goal is to showcase not only the significant films of the year and find a way to contextualize those films for the audience; we are trying to find ways to bring the international conversation about cinema to Los Angeles.”

To that end, this year the festival is introducing what it hopes will become a new tradition, the series “World Cinema: Masters in Conversation,” highlighting outstanding international filmmakers who might »

The Rock's Rampage Movie Gets a Spring 2018 Release Date

11 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It sounds like Dwayne Johnson is going to jump straight from the set of his Jumanji 2 sequel into the video game adaptation Rampage. Warner Bros. as set a new release date for this monster movie. They have also given their A Star is Born remake a new release date as well.

The often heard about Rampage movie has securely locked in the release date of April 20, 2018. What this means is that the summer 2018 movie going season is going to kick off exceptionally early. The thriller brings the classic Midway arcade game to the big screen with The Rock fighting off giant lizard, gorilla and wolf-like creatures intent on demolishing a major metropolis. No synopsis has been revealed yet, but hopefully it won't bring giant monster fatigue as we're set to also get Kong: Skull Island the year before, and Godzilla 2 the year after, with Kong Vs. Godzilla looming in the distance. »

Why Mel Gibson Could Find Redemption with ‘Hacksaw Ridge’

As Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” opens around the country, a movie that is playing well for critics and audiences is tainted by a gifted filmmaker with a sticky scandal.

The deja vu is fresh, after “The Birth of a Nation” director-star Nate Parker tried to promote his movie while being shadowed by his 1999 rape trial, and the surprise news that the accuser committed suicide in 2012. ‘Silence’: Im Global Makes Noise for Martin Scorsese’s Film

3 November 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Nearly a decade after founding Im Global, Stuart Ford is coming to this American Film Market bolstered by a pair of awards-season dramas that he helped navigate to the finish line: “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Silence.”

Mel Gibson’s World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge,” which has been in works for 15 years, opens Friday amid stellar reviews. “Silence,” a story of Jesuit priests in 17th century Japan, which Martin Scorsese began developing in 1990, opens on Dec. 23.

“It has been a great year for independents even though there’s no ‘Hunger Games’ and no ‘Twilight,'” Ford told Variety. “‘Hacksaw Ridge’ is working well, and has strong playability for females and in middle America — like ‘American Sniper.'”

“And ‘Silence’ is beautiful and stunning,” Ford said. “It has a $50 million budget and it’s cerebral and meditative — sort of a litmus test for independents.”

Box Office Preview: ‘Doctor Strange,’ ‘Trolls,’ and ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ All Look to Score

3 November 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Hollywood is a big fan of May-November relationships. The first weekends of those months is when studios look to launch top franchise films and get a head start on the season. Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” (Disney) leads a trio of potentially strong releases that includes the animated “Trolls” (20th Century Fox) and Mel Gibson’s World War II story “Hacksaw Ridge” (Lionsgate).

Last year at this time, the combination of the James Bond entry “Spectre” and “The Peanuts Movie” led to a Top 10 total of just under $150 million, the best figure since mid-July at peak summer. More than 75 percent of that came from the two new releases; they went on to gross more than $100 million, as did that November’s final “Hunger Games” entry, “The Good Dinosaur,” and “Creed.”

11 Things That Make the Oscar Campaign For ‘Sausage Party’ Less Crazy

Sausage Party’ (Courtesy: Sony Pictures Entertainment)

By: Carson Blackwelder

The Hollywood Reporter

Believe it or not, Sausage Party is getting a big Oscars push thanks to Sony.

The naughty R-rated animated film—which was written by and stars Seth Rogen, among others—was both a critical hit (currently sitting at 83% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and commercial success (earning more than $135 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo) this summer and now it’s getting a campaign, as reported by our very own Scott Feinberg for The Hollywood Reporter, to help it compete in the 89th Academy Awards next February.

If you think this move is crazy, let us remind you about some of the off-the-wall things that have happened in the 21st century alone that will make it sound totally normal.

Blackface controversy.

Who would have guessed that—in 2009—there would be someone nominated for an Oscar who played a character in blackface. »

Man Down Trailer: Shia Labeouf Struggles To Cope With Ptsd

25 October 2016 2:23 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Shia Labeouf struggles to cope with Ptsd in the nail-biting first teaser for Man DownDito Montiel’s post-apocalyptic war drama set for release in early December.

Don’t let the post-apocalyptic handle fool you, though; Montiel’s feature is a character drama first and foremost, and early signs point to Labeouf turning in a raw, heartfelt performance as U.S. Marine Gabriel Drummer.

Upon returning home from a harrowing tour in Afghanistan, our damaged lead begins a desperate search to find estranged son Jonathan (Charlie Shotwell) and wife, Natalie (Kate Mara). It’s here that Man Down places a laser focus on the ways in which the horrors of war can erode one’s psyche to the point of mental collapse. Think American Sniper mixed with elements of The Hurt Locker, only darker.

Adam G. Simon is the brains behind the script, and following screenings at both Venice and Toronto last year, »

Deadpool 2: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Lizzy Caplan, and More On Shortlist To Play Domino

Coming off of the original Deadpool film, it was clear there was a pretty big role to fill for the sequel: Cable. Deadpool even mentioned the guy in the post-credits scene of his film. But apart from Cable, there was one big comic book character that fans knew was also on the horizon: Domino. This is someone who has a history with both Cable and Deadpool in a big way.

For those unfamiliar, Domino is yet another mutant in the Marvel universe probably most physically notable for her pale skin and voluptuous figure (I know, right? Totally uncommon in superhero comics). Like Deadpool, she also makes her living as a badass mercenary.
