The Jungle Book – Review

14 April 2016 11:12 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Disney has released two talking animal films this year and both have a lot to say. While Zootopia wowed many with its strong female lead that’s not afraid to take on a stubborn and judgmental world, I found it a bit preachy and heavy-handed – not balancing the fun factor with the weight of the social commentary. Prior to the expedition into The Jungle Book, I didn’t know what to expect. It has been decades since I’ve seen the animated film or the live action film. And while I know the story, I’m not sure I was necessarily aware of the degree of subtext inherent in the story. Either that, or Jon Favreau isn’t afraid to let his call of the wild echo through the jungle.

One of the running themes in the film is that because Mowgli is human, he has the gift of intellect and problem-solving. »

CinemaCon Lays Foundation for 2016’s Animated Awards Race

13 April 2016 8:58 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

From a ten-minute preview of Illumination’s “The Secret Life of Pets” to a 27-minute deep dive into Pixar’s “Finding Dory,” this year’s CinemaCon is laying the groundwork for a very competitive animated feature awards race in 2016.

Warner Bros. got the ball rolling Tuesday by presenting a look at “Storks,” from writer-director Nicholas Stoller. The film, co-directed by Doug Sweetland, tells the story of, well, storks, who have transitioned from delivering babies to delivering packages. Complications ensue when an order for a baby appears. Andy Samberg stars alongside Keegan-Michael Key, Kelsey Grammer and Katie Crown.

(WB also touted the Warner Animation Group, which could land future consideration for everything from “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Movie 2” to a new spin on the world of Scooby Doo and friends.)

Sticking with avian themes, Sony Pictures Animation will be releasing “The Angry Birds Movie” later this year. On Tuesday, »

Will 'The Jungle Book' Be Another Big Box Office Win for Disney?

12 April 2016 9:53 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Batman v Superman's two-week run atop the box office came to an end last weekend as Universal's new comedy The Boss just barely beat it with $23.5 million. Unfortunately for The Boss, its reign looks to be quite short, with three newcomers hitting theaters this Friday, including Disney's highly-anticipated The Jungle Book, Warner Bros.' Barbershop: The Next Cut and Lionsgate's Criminal. According to the predictions from ToddMThatcher.com, The Jungle Book is looking to run away with a huge opening weekend win.

The Jungle Book is eyeing a debut of $74.6 million, as Barbershop: The Next Cut debuts in second with $23.1 million. Both The Boss ($13.5 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($11.1 million) will likely drop to third and fourth place, respectively, with Criminal rounding out the top 5 with $9.3 million. The Jungle Book has a huge edge over its competitors in terms of theater count and critical acclaim.

The first film doesn’t officially hit cinemas until this Friday, but a ‘Jungle Book 2’ is already in development over at Disney with Jon Favreau once again at the helm.

The news comes via The Hollywood Reporter who also report that Justin Marks is also in negotiations to return to pen the screenplay. Favreau will also produce the film along with Brigham Taylor.

The first film, based on the books of Rudyard Kipling and on the 1967 animated version from Disney, is getting wide-spread positive reviews, including one here on Thn. Here’s a snippet of what we thought of it.

The vocal performances are excellent,  stand-outs being Bill Murray’s lovable Baloo, the fierce tones of Idris Elba (in his second of three Disney movies this year – following Zootropolis and ahead of Finding Dory »

Disney’s Alan Horn Uses Low-Key Approach, Keen Creative Vision to Find Hits of the Future

11 April 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If Disney’s Burbank headquarters suggests the look of a whimsical, post-modern Parthenon, with columns styled as giant “Snow White” dwarves, then a sixth-floor screening room might be the building’s most sacred shrine. At least to Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn.

It’s to a modest, three-row theater that the man who oversees Disney’s hit-making factory retreats to get an early look at the would-be blockbuster movies of tomorrow, from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Captain America: Civil War” to “The Jungle Book” and “Finding Dory.” Horn comes to the theater carrying only two possessions: a totemic brand of pencil (more on that later) and a notepad. “I get to look at the very, very first cut,” he says, pausing to relish the thought. “That is heaven for me.”

The humble trappings belie the status of one of the most powerful figures in media. His position at the forefront of U. »

Box Office: Melissa Shows Batman Who is 'Boss' (and Other Female Hit Stories)

10 April 2016 3:27 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

To keep ourselves entertained, we like to spin the box office charts so it's not just "copy/paste" from week to week. So let's look at the box office top ten through the lens of current movies with female leads. Melissa McCarthy (in a photo finish for #1 with superheroes) and Helen Mirren keep proving their box office consistency over and over again, don't they? We're also happy to see Sally Field doing so well in what could have been a blink and you'll miss it VOD movie. Field's already outperformed last year's senior female sleeper indie hits Grandma and I'll See You In My Dreams.

But the 10 female names below make up such an odd odd sorority you must admit...

Top Ten Female Lead Movies This Weekend

01 The Boss (Melissa McCarthy) $23.4 New Melissa McCarthy

03 Zootopia (Ginnifer Goodwin) $14.3 (cum. $296)

04 My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (Nia Vardalos) $6.4 (cum. $46.7)

Box Office: 5 Reasons Why Melissa McCarthy Defeated the Dark Knight

10 April 2016 1:25 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Forget Wonder Woman or "Zootopia's" Officer Judy Hopps. The most commanding female at the box office this weekend was Melissa McCarthy's hard-charging tycoon Michelle Darnell.

The battle this weekend was "Batman v Superman" vs. "The Boss," and while the superhero saga was widely expected to threepeat at No.1 on the box office chart, it ended up being a neck-and-neck race. On Sunday, it looked like "The Boss" would be the victor, claiming an estimated $23.5 million and edging out "BvS" by just $45,000.

For "Boss" to come out ahead of "BvS" and two new competitors ("Demolition" and "Hardcore Henry") is no small feat, especially considering how many obstacles it had to overcome. "The Boss" became the fifth McCarthy starring vehicle in a row to open above $21.5 million -- despite really bad reviews and a C+ CinemaScore. This weekend's results seem to show that, no matter what hurdles McCarthy has to leap, »

'The Boss' Beats 'Batman v Superman' at the Box Office with $23.48M

10 April 2016 12:18 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice entering its third week at the box office, most expected the superhero adventure to defend its title for the third weekend in a row. The movie faced three newcomers this weekend, Universal's The Boss, Stx Entertainment's Hardcore Henry and Relativity's Before I Wake, none of which were expected to give Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a run for its money. However, while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did manage to slightly overperform in its third weekend, it still couldn't take down The Boss, which just barely won with $23.48 million.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice managed to defend its box office crown last weekend by taking in $51.3 million, although it suffered a massive drop of 69.1% from its record-breaking debut of $166 million. This weekend, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice dropped just 54.3%, but it finished $23.43 million, just $500,000 below The Boss. It's possible »

Can Melissa McCarthy Show 'Batman v Superman' Who's 'The Boss'?

7 April 2016 12:58 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Last weekend Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice saw a 69% second weekend drop in the face of no new competition from the major studios, yet it still retained the #1 position at the box office by a wide margin. This week the superhero slugfest may have a tougher fight on its hands as Melissa McCarthy enters the ring with her newest comedy The Boss. Meanwhile, Stx is targeting the attention of gamers with the intense, first person actioner Hardcore Henry and Fox Searchlight has bumped up the release of Demolition from an estimated 550 theaters to over 850 theaters this weekend. At the top, Batman v Superman is hoping to bounce back this weekend. In an attempt to determine what that may look like, the first number to consider is the average, 47.5% drop for film's in their third weekend that opened in over 3,700 theaters and scored a "B" CinemaScore. That said, things could also go the other direction, »

The Jungle Book review: ” A wild, wonderful and welcome return”

6 April 2016 3:56 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The Jungle Book review: Jon Favreau nails it with this visually stunning revival of perhaps Disney’s greatest movie.

The Jungle Book review by Paul Heath. Jon Favreau revisits Disney’s 1960s classic animated movie, and of course Rudyard Kipling’s wonderful books, and brings it bang up to date for this live-action/ CGI-animated fare that is a wonderful, wild spectacle that pleases from the off.

Re-imagining an animated classic, especially one that is lauded as being one of he best in Disney’s huge, applauded back-catalogue is quite a task to under-take, but under-take it is just what actor turned celebrated film-maker Jon Favreau has done with the is epic 2016 version. 1967’s The Jungle Book was one of the last movies that Walt Disney personally worked on. Released just ten months after his death, the film was described as near-perfect, and was received exceptionally by critics and audiences alike. »
