Another Oscar? First Look At Eddie Redmayne In Tom Hooper's 'The Danish Girl'

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Whether or not you think that Michael Keaton deserved the Best Actor Oscar for "Birdman," there's no denying that winner Eddie Redmayne virtually transformed into Stephen Hawking for his performance in "The Theory Of Everything." What's more, Academy voters might like what the actor is doing next in "The Danish Girl." A first look from "The King's Speech" and "Les Miserables" director Tom Hooper's next movie has arrived. Based on the novel by David Ebershoff and penned by Lucinda Coxon (Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming "Crimson Peak"), the film chronicles the first-ever sex-change patient, Einar Wegener, a Danish artist whose love affair with his wife —fellow Danish artist Gerda Wegener— set him on the path to an eventual male-to-female operation. The cast is rounded out by Matthias SchoenaertsAlicia Vikander and Amber Heard, but it's Redmayne's work that is already »

Birdman got it wrong: serious actors love playing superheroes

3 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The torment of Michael Keaton’s washed-up thesp grossly exaggerates the gap between arthouse movies and Hollywood’s fantasy blockbusters

I blame Alec Guinness. The late Englishman is famously reputed to have labelled 1977’s Star Wars, which brought him elevated fame, fortune and an Oscar nomination, as “fairytale nonsense”. And so, right at the very beginning of Hollywood’s blockbuster era, the message to awards season voters was clear: the new wave of fantasy action epics were to be regarded as inferior, especially so as even those who starred in them thought they weren’t much cop.

The key character in Birdman, Riggan Thomson, might be seen as a latter day Guinness (though surely the Englishman never suffered so greatly). Former Batman Michael Keaton plays a washed-up former A-lister fighting against almost constant psychological torment, desperate to prove himself as a “real” actor because his best-known role is that of the titular man-sized avian crime-fighter. »

New Awards Season Rules: Would more nominees help solve the Oscars' diversity problem?

14 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Excuse us if we go out on a limb here, but something tells us the collective brain trust at The Academy is glad this awards season has mercifully come to an end. After an incredibly diverse 86th Academy Awards ceremony, where "12 Years a Slave" took Best Picture, a Mexican filmmaker won Best Director, Lupita Nyong'o earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and John Ridley won Best Adapted Screenplay, the Oscars appeared to take a step back in 2015. It wasn't just that "Selma" was snubbed in a number of major categories. The #OscarsSoWhite hashtag became a historical footnote that will haunt the Academy for years (and, trust, it will be back again if the public wills it). But it had more to do with all white nominees in the acting categories than just "Selma" itself. This also brought to light that it was yet another year without a female nominee in the Best Director category, »

9 Insane Injuries Actors Suffered To Win An Oscar

23 hours ago | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Focus Features/Universal Pictures

If this year and every other year before it is any proof, the Oscars can be difficult to predict. Take the Best Actor category in 2015: back in spring 2014, everyone thought Timothy Spall – coming off the back of a Cannes win for Mr. Turner – would be the eventual winner. He wasn’t even nominated.

Then, for a time, Foxcatcher’s Steve Carell – after Cannes saw him make a significant transformation back in May – then Birdman’s Michael Keaton were the obvious winners of award. On the night, however, they were both pipped to the post by plucky English upstart Eddie Redmayne.

Aside from Redmayne giving a superb performance in The Theory Of Everything, there’s another good reason why the actor came to take the prize: he suffered for his art. You see, if there’s one thing you can predict at the Oscars, it’s »

David Oyelowo and Michael Keaton Had a Full-On Oscars Bromance

26 February 2015 3:25 AM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

David Oyelowo and Michael Keaton may have been competitors all award season, but at the Oscars on Sunday, the guys proved they have nothing but love for each other. And that's not an exaggeration - the Selma and Birdman leading gents actually embraced and hugged each other on the red carpet. Although David wasn't in the best actor category with Michael (that snub caused quite a fuss), it was still a big night for him, as his movie about Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement was nominated for best picture. Read on to see David and Michael get cute, and then check out all the stars on the Oscars red carpet. »

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 4 DVD Set Slays Home Video Sales Charts

HBO’s eagerly awaited fourth-season set of hot TV series “Game of Thrones” debuted at No. 1 on both national home video sales charts the week ending Feb. 22, a banner week for new releases in which the top five sellers are all newcomers.

Bowing at No. 2 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart was Universal Pictures’ “Dumb and Dumber To,” the belated sequel to the 1994 slapstick classic that reunites original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels and earned a respectable $86.2 million in U.S. theaters.

Sony Pictures’ controversial “The Interview” debuted at No. 3 on both charts, a ranking observers surmise might have been higher had the film not been available earlier via streaming (it became available on Netflix on Jan. 24) and online purchase. The comedy, about two journalists told to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un after getting an interview with him, »

Here's a Fake Birdman Action Figure to Covet (Video)

25 February 2015 11:50 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Though Michael Keaton was denied the opportunity to bring home an Academy Award action figure Sunday night, others' dreams of a Birdman action figure live on, as evidenced by this commercial released by Fox Searchlight Films on Tuesday, the same day the Birdman Blu-ray was released. The clip is a near-perfect re-creation of 1990s-era toy commercials, right down to the overly enthusiastic child actors and the fact that, though the toy doesn't seem to have any points of articulation, it's very good at breaking through barriers made of sticks and shooting an energy ray out of its chest. Alejandro G. Inarritu on Oscar Glory and Why He Wouldn’t Have Minded Losing

25 February 2015 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Alejandro G. Inarritu was as unabashedly frank backstage at Sunday night’s Academy Awards as his movie “Birdman,” about a washed-up superhero-movie actor attempting to reinvent himself on Broadway, was unapologetically bold.

When asked about the apprehension in conceiving of such a daring cinematic undertaking, the writer-director declared, “Fear is the condom of life; it doesn’t allow you to enjoy things.” As the crowd exploded in laughter, he added, “I did it without, and this was the result; it was real. It was making love.”

It was that raw, unconventional nature of “Birdman”— the magical realism of star Michael Keaton moving objects with his mind, floating three feet off his dressing-room floor in a lotus position and flying through New York City — that helped Inarritu’s movie nab four Oscars for best director, picture, original screenplay and cinematography.

Michael Keaton Pocketing Planned Oscar Acceptance Speech Goes Viral (Video)

Michael Keaton‘s “Birdman” character expressed disdain for “going viral” several times in Best Picture of the Year Oscar winner, but hopefully the actor, himself, doesn’t mind. An eagle-eyed viewer caught Keaton slipping what is believed to be prepared remarks back into his pocket after “Theory of Everything” star Eddie Redmayne was named Best Actor winner during Sunday’s Academy Awards. Since being posted to Vine, the clip has been looped nearly 20 million times. From Mickey Rourke to Michael Keaton: Ranking Our Favorite Oscars Comebacks

Are you still reeling from Sunday night's Oscars show? Same. And no, we don't mean the shock of John Travolta's excessive face-caressing  or Neil Patrick Harris' extended crotch shot. We're talking about the Best Actor results. To start, we're more than overjoyed for Eddie Redmayne. His portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything was heartbreakingly good, and his adorable speech proved him to be just as humble as we suspected. But, it would be a lie to say that his win wasn't a bit of a shock. Just like Michael Keaton himself, we really thought The Birdman was going to take it. For starters, Birdman had already won three other awards that evening. And, »

Watch Michael Keaton Put His Speech Back In His Pocket After Losing At The Oscars

24 February 2015 1:37 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

On Sunday, the Oscars turned out to be a pretty good night for just about any and all things related to Birdman. However, for Michael Keaton, the man who played the guy who played Birdman, the night was not quite so bountiful. The 63 year-old actor's improbable presence amongst the nominees for Best Actor seemed to be the inevitable culmination of the film.s fourth-wall breaking, close-to-home story, but, unfortunately for him, The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne ended up being the spoiler. This means that we will never get to hear the speech that Keaton prepared in case he took home the Oscar, but now thanks to a viral Vine, we can watch the moment when the actor unceremoniously pocketed the paper on which it was written. Yes, much like someone left hanging after an attempt to garner a high-five goes ignored, Keaton.s preparedness for this pivotal moment »

"Birdman" : 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'

From The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.Ca, Sneak Peek 'the good, the bad and the ugly' in "Birdman", starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone:

Michael Stevens For 'The Good':

"'Birdman' aka 'The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance' hurtles along as if in flight, with a single cinematic take, soaring over, under and around the inner demons haunting 'Riggan Thomson' (Michael Keaton) , a grizzled film actor turned stage director, eager to rebuild his reputation in the theater world ...

"...after famously portraying the iconic movie superhero 'Birdman'.

"The funny, clever script shows how vain, fragile and bird-brained actors can be, as they go through the hollow motions of life, when their true calling is in performance...

"...with a convincing ensemble cast, bopping along to a jittery jazz drum score by Antonio Sanchez...

"'Birdman' is a unique satirical feature, that kept me on the edge, »

Watch: 'Birdman' Gets a Perfect Retro 90s Action Figure Commercial

24 February 2015 1:36 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Pretty much everything came up Birdman at the 87th Academy Awards last weekend, with the exception of Michael Keaton not winning Best Actor. Director Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu took home Best Director, and the film also won Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. And since the film is already available on Blu-Ray and DVD, clearly Fox Searchlight wants to keep the excitement going since a faux commercial for the official Birdman action figure, which Alex Billington received when the film hit theaters last fall. It's the kind of commercial you'd see for action figures in the 90s (and occasionally still see today). Watch! Here's the official commercial for the Birdman action figure from YouTube: Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who co-wrote the script with Nicolás Giacobone & Armando Bo (Biutiful) and newcomer Alexander Dinelaris. Watch: This Fake ‘Birdman’ Action Figure TV Commercial Is Awesome

24 February 2015 1:12 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In case you somehow missed it, didn’t care, or were living under a rock, Fox Searchlight’s “Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance" dominated the Academy Awards this weekend. The movie won Best Picture, filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu won Best Director and the movie also took Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay (all our 2015 Oscar coverage can be found here). And in case you’re somehow unaware, the superhero-skewering conceit of the movie (though really it’s a big send-up on the entire movie industry and its players too) is that Michael Keaton’s character is a once-iconic, now-washed-up actor known for a past superstar career where he played Birdman to blockbuster success in multiple sequels (and in the movie he’s trying to regain his artistic dignity by mounting a Broadway play of merit). To celebrate their Oscar wins, Fox Searchlight has released this amusing “Birdman” action-figure commercial. »

Michael Keaton Stars in the Saddest Oscars Moment Ever?

Michael Keaton was all ready to accept an Oscar, but the only problem was that it didn't go to him.

In a heartbreaking vine that is going viral, the Birdman star is seen putting what many believe is his acceptance speech back into his suit jacket after Eddie Redmayne's name was just called for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 87th Academy Awards.

The 63-year-old actor stills stand and applauds Redmayne who won for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. And while Keaton didn't end up victorious in this category, his film won for Best Picture and Best Director.

Whether he was prepared for the win or not, he did not seem phased at all at the Governors Ball post-Oscars. Keaton smiled with his Birdman director as Gonzales held up that golden statue.
