Go behind the scenes of 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' in this sneak peek

16 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them isn't coming out until November, which is a very long time from now.  To make the wait a little bit easier, Pottermore released a little behind-the-scenes look at the movie, which will take place in America about a hundred years ago. The screenplay was written by J.K. Rowling herself (who has recently taken to describing various wizarding schools around the world). Eddie Redmayne, Alison Sudol, Katherine Waterston, and Dan Fogler describe their characters, who, it appears, will team up to find some fantastic beasts after they escape from Redmayne's character's special suitcase. And, in the process, run through some awesome 1920s New York City sets. Colin Farrell is not interviewed in the featurette, but there are a few shots of him looking dapper as anything as Percival Graves. Rowling also appears, briefly, but isn't interviewed. Redmayne is, and promises this movie is "imagination taken to the extreme. »

Eddie Redmayne Takes You Behind the Scenes of Fantastic Beasts, But Does Not Reveal Where to Find Them

31 January 2016 6:59 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

We know a little about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's Jazz age setting from peeks at plot details and the Harry Potter spinoff's first trailer, but now we've got a more in depth look at the cast and characters. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander, who looses track of his magical suitcase full of fantastic beasts in New York, while Alison Sudol and Katherine Waterston play sisters Tina and Queenie Goldstein. Dan Fogler plays Jacob, a "No-Maj" (the, let's say, creative American word for muggle) who fills out the quartet of central characters after they go on the run — from Colin Farrell, apparently, who plays an auror. Colin Farrell doesn't talk in this preview, which is too bad, because it would be thrilling to hear him talk about wizards in his Irish brogue. »

Dumbledore to Return in 'Harry Potter' Spinoff 'Fantastic Beasts'?

28 January 2016 3:48 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Five years ago this summer, the Harry Potter movie franchise came to a close with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, but most fans knew that wouldn't be the last we'd see of this lucrative property. Sure enough, Warner Bros. announced in 2014 that a new trilogy will begin with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which marks the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling. The story will be set 70 years before Harry Potter first set foot in Hogwarts, although fans are still wondering if there will be any connections to Harry Potter and his magical classmates. As it turns out, one of the original Harry Potter cast members is quite desperate to reprise his role in this prequel.

Michael Gambon played Headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the last six Harry Potter movies, after the death of Richard Harris. The actor recently spoke to Express, revealing that he wants a »

Watch a Video Essay on Morality in the Post-Modern World of ‘In Bruges’

28 January 2016 12:09 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Debuts don’t get much finer than Martin McDonagh‘s In Bruges, the darkly twisted and comedic tale of two hit men (Colin Farrell) and (Brendan Gleeson) who venture to Belgium after a job to lay low. With differing personalities on how they perceive the quaint city, orders from their boss (Ralph Fiennes) throws a major divide between the two. With a great ensemble and McDonagh’s sharp-as-ever writing there are many themes at play, and today brings a new video essay exploring them,

Coming from The Nerdwriter, it explores the idea of Bruges-as-purgatory and how Martin McDonagh stages a morality play in dialogue. By looking at the film’s structure, its religious themes, and how the character’s actions, mood, and dialogue are reflected in each, it’s a perfect post-viewing watch for one of the finest films of the last decade. Emily S. Whitten: Seven Movies for Surviving Snowzilla

26 January 2016 10:00 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

This past weekend we here in Washington DC got a lot of snow. Um… “A whole lot of snow”? …Okay, how about, “a metric ton of snow”? Ooh… “The fourth heaviest snowstorm dating to 1884.” There. I think that sums it up nicely.

Given this, I (not even kidding) have not left my home in five days (but I’m still sane! No really, I promise! The purple bunnies in my pantry told me so.) And of course, being a very practical person, since I knew the storm was coming I ensured I was well-stocked with all the necessary items beforehand. But then, around the end of Day 1, as the snowdrifts began inching into the two-foot range on my windowsills, I began to wonder what I would do to entertain myself if the power went out (taking with it, one might assume, the Internet).

“Ah-ha!” I said to myself. “I have »

Examining Hollywood Remakes: Fright Night

25 January 2016 6:17 PM, PST | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

We’re back to dissect another remake and this time we’re taking a bite out of a vampire movie. The original version was a classic but the remake does not quite measure up. This week, Cinelinx looks at Fright Night (2011).

When the remake of the classic vampire film Fright Night (1985) came out in 2011, the initial  reaction was very positive because it was such a relief to have truly evil vampires back. After the brooding and sparking vampires of Twilight started a trend of angst-ridden or lovelorn or depressed vampires, fans were thrilled that the blood-sucking antagonist of director Craig Gillespie's new Fright Night remake and his fellow vamps were hard-core predators with no reservations about chowing down on their next-door neighbor. The Fright Night creatures-of-the-night were more Dracula than Edward. It was good to have the badness back. However, upon reflection, the 2011 version doesn’t hold up that well. »

Plot: In a society where having a mate is mandatory, a newly single man (Colin Farrell) is taken to a resort where he's given forty-five days to find a mate or be turned into the animal of his choosing. The film is out now, available on VOD and iTunes, and to celebrate the release we've got an exclusive clip to share from the film. I think it gives you a good sense of the hyperactive style and self-reflexive tone of film. It's got a great 90s vibe going which is super fun.

‘True Detective: The Complete 2nd Season’ DVD Review

17 January 2016 7:44 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

The level of hype around True Detective: The Complete Second Season means it had a huge job to do. The first season created something special with the relationship between Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, and created a mythology. Where the second season fails is that it totally forgets that altogether… While calling it a failure is harsh, the simple fact is that it is. There is no getting away from it. What is also true though is that when you remove it from the True Detective bubble, it is also a very good, dark cop show. It’s just not the one we wanted.

In the second season we have three cops, Detective Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell), Detective Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams), and office Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) who are investigating a murder. This brings in a connection to Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) and together they are the connected »
