Oscar poll: Should academy reveal who finished 2nd & 3rd?

This year's Oscar race came down to the wire, with "Spotlight" eking out a surprise win against presumed frontrunner "The Revenant" and close competitor "The Big Short." And that wasn't the only shocker of the night: Mark Rylance ("Bridge of Spies") pulled off an upset in Best Supporting Actor over Sylvester Stallone ("Creed") and "Ex Machina" came out of nowhere to take Best Visual Effects. We imagine those must have been close races, but were they really? We only ever find out who came out on top, not how the rest of the votes were distributed. Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions -Break- So what would we learn if the academy revealed their complete results? Would the nominees or studios even want to know? After all, finding out if Rylance won by two votes or two hundred might be cold comfort to Stallone. Our forum posters ar. »

Oscar poll: Who should host for the first time?

9 March 2016 3:00 AM, PST

Chris Rock took his second turn as emcee of the Oscars on February 28; he previously hosted the event in February 2005, so the telecast producers and the academy had some idea of what they were getting. Emmy Awards shake-ups: Plurality vote, shortened seasons redefined, new short form series

7 March 2016 12:24 PM, PST

The Emmys recently announced a slew of rule changes regarding eligibility and voting. The best way to understand what they mean for this year’s races is to consider how they would have affected past ones. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Emmy Predictions Eliminated preferential/ranked voting in the final round Emmys will now be awarded through simple plurality votes instead of preferential ballots, in which voters had ranked all nominees; the winner was the one with the best average.  The new system could favor more polarizing choices rather than consensus picks. For example, the Producers Guild and Emmys usually agree on Best Comedy Series, but not last season when the former awarded “Transparent” while the latter went with “Veep.” How much of the “Transparent” loss at the Emmys can be attributed to voters ranking it low because they felt that it was too dramati. »
