Monsters come in many forms.

The Buzz: Back to the Room we go? Hopefully this non-sequel to Cloverfield will be as enjoyable as the competing pre-release theories as to what the story will be about. And I don't think 10 Cloverfield Lane will simply be a character study of John Goodman's fall-out shelter survivor/protector/potential-monster-in-hiding. — Arno
The Perfect Match (2016)- Comedy | Romance
A playboy named Charlie, convinced that all his relationships are dead, meets the beautiful and mysterious Eva. Agreeing to a casual affair, Charlie then wants a bit more from their relationship.

The Buzz: R&B; singer Cassie gets her first starring role alongside former E! News anchorman Terrence J. with a romantic comedy that offers a slight twist on its formula: This time through, it's the guy who gets to experience the conflict when his love interest isn't quite ready for commitment. Personally, we'd rather see Paula Patton and Donald Faison star in this movie, but they're both in supporting roles -- and neither one of them seems to age.
The Brothers Grimsby (2016)- Action | Comedy
A new assignment forces a top spy to team up with his football hooligan brother.
Director:Louis Leterrier |

The Buzz: Mark Strong gets to do more than trailer and monitor potential Kingsmen in this action/comedy that Sacha Baron Cohen began developing a few years back, but it's tough to gauge the worldwide appeal of a raunchy spy comedy that descends into the world of football hooliganism. In fact, it felt like the movie was pretty much off the radar until first reviews let it be known that Donald Trump contracts HIV at some point in the story, though we don't think that's the kind of word-of-mouth that helps sell tickets?
The Young Messiah (2016)- Drama
Tells the story of Jesus Christ at age seven as he and his family depart Egypt to return home to Nazareth. Told from his childhood perspective, it follows young Jesus as he grows into his religious identity.
Director:Cyrus Nowrasteh |

The Buzz: Anne Rice's novel Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt is the source material for writer/director Cyrus Nowrasteh's first film since 2008's The Stoning of Soraya M.. Aside from a studio shift, there's been no controversy about the project, which puts a spin on the early life of Jesus Christ. Rice published a follow up novel, The Road to Cana, though there's no word yet on whether it has been optioned for a potential sequel.
Creative Control (2015) - [Limited]- Drama
In near future Brooklyn, an ad executive uses a new Augmented Reality technology to conduct an affair with his best friend's girlfriend...sort of.
Director:Benjamin Dickinson |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Indie critics are rather sharply divided on director Benjamin Dickinson's SXSW winner. Pretty much anything set in or having to do with Brooklyn is going to alienate certain audiences these days (save, perhaps, "Broad City") and the fact that the story is centered around a Google Glass-like invention creates another hurdle for some people, but the movie's fans say there's a lot to consider here - a link between technological advances and dehumanization that trump any "hipster cinema" labels.
Eye in the Sky (2015) - [Limited]- Drama | Thriller | War
Col. Katherine Powell, a military officer in command of an operation to capture terrorists in Kenya, sees her mission escalate when a girl enters the kill zone triggering an international dispute over the implications of modern warfare.
Director:Gavin Hood |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: One of Alan Rickman's final movies is a topical thriller, a subject that was examined in the recent Andrew Niccol film, Good Kill. We imagine this sort of filmmaking is tricky business - how to make remote-view war experience suspenseful, and how avoid cheapening the real-world ramifications of the subject matter in the name of entertainment. This cast should be up for the task, and do we detect a bit of wit in the screenplay, too?
Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015) - [Limited]- Comedy | Drama
A self-help seminar inspires a sixty-something woman to romantically pursue her younger co-worker.
Director:Michael Showalter |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Knowing that Michael Showalter is the writer/director, we're hoping that Doris and her Millennial co-workers have more to learn about one another than "hey, I might have a romantic shot with that guy who's my grandson's age/that kooky older lady sure is cool."
Lolo (2015) - [Limited]- Comedy
Violette, a 40-year old workaholic with a career in the fashion industry falls for a provincial computer geek, Jean-Rene, while on a spa retreat with her best friend.
Director:Julie Delpy |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: You can always rely on some well-crafted barbs when Julie Delpy is in writer/director mode, but most reviewers seem to want a deeper exploration of the darker themes she flirts with in her latest film. Even it is has it faults, it's probably worthwhile to take in a viewing of this movie simply because of its fabulous cast.
Marguerite (2015) - [Limited]- Drama
Paris, 1920s. Marguerite Dumont is a wealthy woman, lover of the music and the opera. She loves to sing for her friends, although she's not a good singer. Both her friends and her husband have kept her fantasy. The problem begins when she decides to perform in front of a real audience.
Director:Xavier Giannoli |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Loosely based on the life of infamous singer and early 20th century sensation Florence Foster Jenkins, this French drama set in 1920s Paris tells the story of Marguerite Dumont, a socialite and aspiring opera singer who has a passion for singing. The only problem? She's terrible at it, and her friends and family don't have the courage to tell her this, even despite the fact that she's decided to give a public recital. - Bret Federigan
River of Grass (1994) - [Limited]- Drama
Cozy, a dissatisfied housewife, meets Lee at a bar. A drink turns into a home break-in, and a gun shot sends them on the run together, thinking they've committed murder.
Director:Kelly Reichardt |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Cool to see Kelly Reichardt's first film earn a re-release. Upon its release back in the mid-1990s nearly every film critic called her one to watch, which has proven to be an understatement.
Backgammon (2015) - [Limited]- Drama | Mystery
When Lucian and Miranda are left alone in an isolated mansion for the weekend, their mutual attraction grows, as does their unease about the whereabouts of Miranda's ex-boyfriend who may be hiding somewhere in the house.
Director:Francisco Orvañanos |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The hook to the rich-kids-playing-deadly-games subgenre is: You have to care about some of the characters, even when they're at their most loathsome, scheming, and self-absorbed. We watched the Backgammon trailer a few times; each time it finished, we just wished the mansion in which these particular games unfurl would just make like Carrie and pull itself down into Hell.
