Chinese manufacturer Huawei has today launched the Huawei Matebook, a 2-in-1 laptop/tablet hybrid that is directly aimed at Apple's iPad Pro and the Microsoft Surface 4 Pro. The Matebook comes with Intel Core m3, m5 or m7 processors and runs Windows 10 Home or Professional Edition, making it an option for mobile image editing with full desktop apps such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. The hardware is wrapped up in an aluminium unibody that is only 6.9mm thin and the 12-inch ISP LCD display offers a 2160 x 1440 resolution. 10mm bezels all around is equivalent to a 84% screen to body ratio. Huawei also says the 85% color gamut and 400 Nits Brightness are better than the displays on Apple's iPad Pro and the Microsoft Surface 4 Pro. At 640 grams the new device is very lightweight as well. The foldable kickstand can be set to two positions, at an angle of 67 or 52 degrees respectively. The detachable keyboard comes with ergonomically curved keys that provide 1.5mm travel. It is spill-resistant and wraps around the device for extra protection of the display. The new MatePen, an active precision pen, is another input option and especially suited for writing and drawing. It comes with an elastomer tip and offers 2048 levels of pressure. One hour of charging of the pen allows for one month of normal use and it also comes with a built-in laser pen. Power is provided via a 4430 mAh Lithium Battery that, thanks to Huawei's battery saving technology, should be good for 10 hours of typical usage. A fingerprint sensor on the edge of the device doubles as power button and provides extra security. It supports multiple fingerprints for more than one Windows account. At only 6.9mm thin its no surprise the MateBook doesn't come with an array of ports and connectors. However, a docking station offering HDMI, VGA, USB and network ports can be plugged into the device's USB Type-C connector. On paper at least the new Huawei MateBook looks like an interesting option for those who want full image-editing capability in an ultra-portable package. It will be available soon, starting at $699 for the Intel m3 version with 4GB RAM and 128GB built-in storage.
