CP+ 2016: Nissin gets serious with radio-triggered flash solutions

I've seen it referred to as Sony's patented Quick Shift Bounce system in a few places so that may be why its not been adopted elsewhere - can anyone confirm that this is indeed the case?

Yes, the Cactus V6 is the only one that will fire a manual off-camera flash AND pass through the TTL signal to a flash on top of an MFT camera. I'm holding out for a future Godox X1 for MFT because my off-camera flashes are Godox V850s and the Cactus won't adjust their output power.

Good point; the reason I didn't think this was an issue was because I initially thought you could use the Di700A on-camera as a commander - much like a Canon 600EX-RT. Nikon's new system also doesn't have this problem since the wireless remote plugs into a different port than the hot-shoe.

As I'm looking into this more, though, I'm not so sure that it's possible to use the Di700A as a commander. I was even told you could use the i60A as a commander but, again, I'm not so sure anymore.

If not, you're right, it's quite limiting.

Furthermore, sometimes you need the flash on-camera not just for on-camera light, but for red AF assist. So that's a double whammy if the Di700A can't act as a commander.

Really, the Air 1 should have a red AF assist beam (like Nikon's SU-800). Specifically for event photography - where I actually keep all my flashes on-camera, but usually stick one on-camera just for red AF assist.

The more I think about this - all solutions are far from ideal. A shame.

i heard on flash havoc that both i60 and i700 can act as commander. anyone no for sure?
there is also the new godox for sony e whose canon and nikon versions have been out for a little while, that should act as commander. maybe c and n users could comment

Robbinsbox: yeah that's what the Nissin rep told me as well, but I'm wondering if something was just lost in translation. I can't find any way to make either a commander, though he did say it's coming in the future to the i60A, since the model there was beta.

Certainly does seem like an oversight to not have commander modes built-in, but, then again, for wedding photography what I care most about is a small commander (not flash) that has red AF assist beam, and no one yet makes that (save for SU-800, which is sorely outdated and turns off Auto ISO on your camera, not to mention doesn't have radio triggering).

Just had an interesting thought while writing that actually. I suppose you might be able to use a Nikon SLR with the wireless remote and off-camera SB-9000s while still having a SU-800 on the camera hot-shoe just for its red AF assist beam (since the wireless flash remote on the Nikon doesn't use the hot-shoe). Wonder if that would work?

I guess even if it did, it'd kill Auto ISO.

It's a very crowded market,
Canon got dedicated line up and Yong Nuo, Godox already on the market with Phottix and others don't forget Metz with their quality

steelhead3: Save for the a7 cameras (and RX1R II?), right? They all use standard hotshoe, if I remember correctly.

Good high ISO performance and flash are somewhat orthogonal. High ISO performance doesn't obviate the need for flash, as flash is often used for creative intent.
