8 December 2015 7:29 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

James Franco has offered up our first look at both him and brother Dave Franco in upcoming making-of drama, The Disaster Artist.

Shedding light on the creation of much-maligned cult drama The Room, James Franco is starring and directing the feature film as Tommy Wiseau, while Dave plays carefree jock, Mark. With production now set to get underway, The Hollywood Reporter confirms that a slew of talent has been added for the non-fiction drama, including model and actress Kate Upton, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, Hannibal Buress and Andrew Santino. They’ll star opposite The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson, who was recruited for the picture only yesterday as Philip Haldiman.

Lifted from Greg Sestero’s first-hand experience with The Room and what it was like to work with the eccentric Wiseau, Franco’s directorial effort will be underpinned by Sestero’s non-fiction novel The Disaster Artist, which he penned alongside »

Josh Hutcherson and Seth Rogen also star in the film, which James Franco is writing and directing.

James Franco will play director Tommy Wiseau while Dave Franco will play Greg Sestero, who co-starred in the film. Theaters across the nation still play the pic during midnight showings over the weekend.

Buress will play Bill Meur, the owner of the stage Wiseau rents for his movie. Santino will portray Scott Holmes, an inexperienced actor who is cast to play Mike in “The Room.”

Josh Hutcherson Boards James Franco’s Adaptation Of The Disaster Artist

7 December 2015 9:15 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

With David and James Franco already on board, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that The Hunger Games and Divergent star Josh Hutcherson is in line to join The Disaster Artist, a making-of story that chronicles the infamous creation of The Room.

Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s award-winning non-fiction novel of the same name, James Franco will direct and star in the feature as Tommy Wiseau, the idiosyncratic filmmaker that released cult thriller The Room in 2003, which is held up by many as one of the worst movies of all time. Now, more than a decade later, Franco and Co. are ready to tell the story behind the lens. At the time, Wiseau set out to write, direct and produce an offbeat drama with zero filmmaking experience, and the end result birthed a film that was considered to be so bad it was good.

Movie Review – The Night Before (2015)

20 November 2015 9:30 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Night Before, 2015.

Directed by Jonathan Levine.

Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, Lizzy Caplan, Jillian Bell, Helene Yorke, Ilana Glazer, Aaron Hill, James Franco, Tracy Morgan, and Miley Cyrus.

Synopsis:

On Christmas eve, three lifelong friends, two of whom are Jewish, spend the night in New York City looking for the Holy Grail of Christmas parties.

It was only a matter of time before Seth Rogen and his usual accomplices took their brand of juvenile hijinks and camaraderie, deciding to blend off-the-cuff, rapid fire humor into the holidays; more specifically, Christmas. What’s mildly disappointing about The Night Before is that, outside of a few clever ideas here and there, the formula for these raunchy offerings stay relatively untouched. The Christmas setting is most definitely taken full advantage of, but at the end of the day you’ve just watched another movie starring all of these interchangeable by »

Film Review: Spirit Starts Early in Fun, Raunchy ‘The Night Before’

20 November 2015 7:33 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The tradition of the holiday party gets a workout in “The Night Before,” as three friends take a Christmas Eve walk through the environs of New York City, and make their merry journey an unforgettable night of libation enhancement, magic moments and yes, the Holiday Spirit.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie are the three, and in a sense they’re all looking for something on the Eve of the Day. Given that this is essentially a Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg joint (“Pineapple Express”), there is a lot of raunch as well, like cocaine blood that falls in a drink. But the whole affair has a lightness and casual humor that makes it warmer than expected, and every “movie star” worth their salt wants to have the film that will be pulled out (downloaded? implanted?) every November and December. “The Night Before” just might have the holiday »

The Night Before (2015) – The Review

19 November 2015 10:25 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Good golly Miss Holly, the big bird’s not in the oven and here we’ve got the second Christmas movie exploding onto screens across the country. Yes, the stench of Love The Coopers is still wafting through the multiplex as this new holiday comedy debuts. But there’s a big difference, well several really. This new comedy definitely and defiantly earns its ‘R’ rating, this thanks in part to its main star, the new king of “stoner”, slacker comedies, Mr. Seth Rogen. After flexing his dramatic muscles in Steve Jobs as Steve Wozniak, he’s returned to his comfort zone as part of a comedy trio this time out. He’s re-united (and it feels so good) with a former co-star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The two were memorable best buds in 2011’s (can it really be four years?) 50/50. And rounding out the threesome, is a survivor of the Coopers catastrophe, »

Bill Hader set for David Foster Wallace-inspired comedy Empress of Serenity

19 November 2015 6:00 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl scribe Jesse Andrews (of both the novel and the screenplay) has just announced his next project, of which he will both write and direct. With Bill Hader now locked in as the lead, Empress of Serenity, which is inspired by David Foster Wallace’s A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again, appears to have great potential.

According to Deadline, Andrews’ script is an edgy comedy following an animal rights lawyer who, while grieving his mother’s death, finds unlikely friendship after he’s coerced by his estranged father to go on a 45-day cruise.

Empress of Serenity will mark Andrews’ directorial debut. The film will be produced by Stephen Chbosky, along with Mr. Mudd’s Lianne Halfon, Russell Smith and John Malkovich. Per The Wrap, The group previously collaborated on The Perks of Being a Wallflower, of which — like Andrews with »

‘The Night Before’ Premiere: Seth Rogen Feels Deja Vu a Year After ‘The Interview’

19 November 2015 12:48 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

For Seth Rogen, Wednesday night’s premiere of Sony’s Christmas comedy “The Night Before” at downtown L.A.’s Ace Hotel brought back a strong sense of deja vu — given that “The Interview” premiered nearly a year earlier at the same venue, albeit under much different circumstances.

“This is such a different vibe from ‘The Interview’ premiere, which was a lot of fun. For one thing, this one is different because we’re actually going to get the movie out into theaters,” Rogen recalled with his trademark chuckle.

At the time of “The Interview’s” Dec. 11 premiere, Sony had endured a painful cyberhack and growing retaliatory threats, later revealed to be issued from North Korea — leading to major chains refusing to show the movie at all. The premiere was subdued — with a small press line and talent declining interviews.

‘The Night Before’ is a raunchy alternative to winter Oscar bait

The Night Before

Written by Evan Goldberg, Kyle Hunter, Jonathan Levine, and Ariel Shaffir

Directed by Jonathan Levine

U.S, 2015

Every November and December studios release holiday-themed flicks to cash in on the frenzy of the season. Every once in a while a gem like Gremlins or Elf comes out and becomes yearly viewing, but what’s more common is a lot of middling fare that clogs theatres. It comes as a great pleasure that The Night Before is the former, rather than the latter. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen, who previously worked together on Jonathan Levine’s 50/50, have a natural chemistry together, and pairing the two again is a total no-brainer. Throw Anthony Mackie into the mix and you have a gross-out comedy worth visiting every year.

It’s New York City, and three lifelong friends in the prime of their lives are going to have their biggest Christmas Eve of all time. »

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: His best performances to date

19 November 2015 9:32 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Simply put, it’s hard to find a more charming up and coming A-lister in Hollywood right now than Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He is one of the industries most uniquely talented actors, with an eye towards filmmaking as well. This week, he goes the raunchy buddy comedy route while mixing in the holiday movie route with The Night Before. Interestingly enough, this also re-teams him with a cast member and a director that led to some of his best work to date (Seth Rogen and Jonathan Levine, respectively. As such, I have a list of his best performances below for you to check out, after a bit on the new flick and what Gordon-Levitt’s career has been like so far… The Night Before is a comedy centered around three friends (Gordon-Levitt and Rogen, along with Anthony Mackie) who have a Christmas tradition of going out and partying. Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘Hunger Games’ Finale Eyes $125 Million Box Office Farewell

18 November 2015 12:14 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Moviegoers this weekend will pay a tribute north of $125 million to Jennifer Lawrence‘s Katniss Everdeen and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,” the final entry in Lionsgate’s blockbuster young adult franchise that debuts Friday. That will be more than enough to knock James Bond thriller “Spectre” from the top spot and outstrip the weekend’s other two wide openers, analysts say. The R-rated Seth Rogen-Evan Goldberg holiday comedy “The Night Before” from Sony Pictures is projected to land at around $15 million, and “Secret in Their Eyes,” an ensemble thriller starring Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman from Stx. »

Review: 'The Night Before' offers up a wild and heartfelt holiday adventure

17 November 2015 10:08 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

One of the reasons "This Is The End" worked is because Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were serious about the horror elements in the film, making the comedy even more of a pressure valve. If you're working to subvert a genre from within, you can't do it with tongue too firmly in cheek or you risk making a parody. With "The Night Before," the script by Jonathan Levine, Kyle Hunter, Ariel Sfaffir and Evan Goldberg is not just a story set during Christmas, but is a very knowing and intentional "Christmas movie," with any number of references to other Christmas films and with plenty of smart takes on the various tropes of the genre. It may be overstuffed the point of bursting, but there's much to like here. Beyond that, though, "The Night Before" is a consistently funny and genuinely heartfelt story about three friends at a turning point in their friendship, »

The Night Before Review

17 November 2015 9:15 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

A bawdy and big-hearted stocking-stuffer for the adults used to enduring all manner of kid-friendly rubbish around the holidays, The Night Before is also much, much better than the movie it’s being sold as. Yes, this is an R-rated, drug-filled, profanity-laden comedy about three friends (Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie) who set out to end their annual tradition of Christmas Eve debauchery on a (very) high note. And yes, it totally follows through on that premise, taking said friends on an insane adventure through the snow-dusted streets of New York City as they struggle to make their way to that most hallowed of holiday bashes: the Nutcracka Ball.

But The Night Before is also the work of writer-director Jonathan Levine (All the Boys Love Mandy LaneThe Wackness, 50/50, Warm Bodies), who has over the years proven himself remarkably proficient at taking just about any genre and cutting through all its B. »

Kay Cannon To Make Directorial Debut With The Pact

16 November 2015 4:49 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

In what can only be described as great news, multiple award-winning writer and producer Kay Cannon is finally set to make her feature film directorial debut, with the upcoming comedy movie, The Pact. The producers of the film – including Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg – will almost certainly be hoping to cash in on Cannon’s impressive comedic skill-set, which helped the TV series 30 Rock achieve dizzying heights of success, and the Pitch Perfect film franchise earn more than $400 million in box office so far.

The Pact is written by Brian Kehoe and Jim Kehoe (Overachievers), with Deadline reporting that Eben Russell, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg also worked on the script. It is, unsurprisingly, a male-dominated story, focusing on three highly protective fathers, and their efforts to derail a pact made by their respective daughters, that would see them each lose their virginity on Prom night.
