But Hammer is the WORST reader! OMG... the man sounds like a total moron,and makes his characters sound like they have the intelligence of a post. Any one knowing Burke's poetic writing knows that Will Patton does a gorgeous job of reading Burke's work - but I simply can't listen to this. It is a horrible butchering of Burke's work!!! Shiver. The absolute worst reading I have ever listened to on an Audible work.

I am a huge Perlman fan, and admittedly picked this up because of his reading. I find most vampire novels these days to be more about the sex than about the story, which I find to be incredibly boring. However, I was more than pleasantly surprised by "The Strain". Believable, good historical background. I can hardly wait for the next installment!!

This is a book everyone in America should read. It should be required reading in schools... and the house and senate. This could actually happen, and the thought is terrifying.

Extremely well written and well narrated, this book kept me up well past the time when sensible people are asleep.

A highly recommended read, well worth the credits. And well worth paying attention to!

The premise is well researched, interesting, and has enough science to keep me interested, while not being so scientific as to be incomprehensible to non-scientific minds. The author presents a facinating theory on the basis of human consciousness, and I know I will spend a good deal of research time on his concepts for the sheer pleasure of knowing more about his subject.

I rated this book lower than I would have liked to due to the ineptitude of the reader. I found his reading style to be extremely dull, flat to the point of monotonous. I honestly nearly put it down within a half hour of picking it up - but hung in there, and was glad I did. A better reader would make this story much more interesting, but having held in and continued the book, I found that the ineptitude of the reader was overshadowed by the story itself. I would tend to disagree with the reviewers who say that the character development is not there. Yes, it is first person, which is a difficult writing style to carry off, and could be better handled. However, I do feel that I gained a good insight into the main character and the closest of the secondary players. In point of fact, I found the train scene to be quite amusing. Being a train enthusiast myself may help in that regard, as I am experienced with the sociology of train travel, and could identify with the thought processes which are a more common luxury onboard train rather than the more common car and air travel. Overall a pleasant listen while remodeling my kitchen!

Character development in the Tower series is always good, but with this one, Mr. King has outdone himself. You feel for all the characters. Can you imagine what Mia's centuries must have been like, the lonliness that brought her to this impasse? The deep frustration of Susanna and of Detta, travellers through the darkness, as their universe twists around them.

I feel like I am coming to know Mr. King much better through this series, and admire the person behind the books as much as I admire the books. Yes, there are some things I would change about the book - but who sees and feels and lives with his characters more than the author? This is HIS vision, children, and as much as one may wish to twist and turn the plot to fit ones own idea of what the story "should" be to fit your own concept, it is true conceit to believe that only your own idea of plot and story line is the correct one, and worthy of print. Nasty comments are unproductive, like a fat man with a beer sitting on a couch making comments about what a loser an Olympic medalist is for winning only five medals instead of six. If you don't think the author did a good job, sit down, pull out your pencil, and start writing. When you have written your own opus, and had it published to stunning review, I shall bow to your opinions. Until then, state your concerns clearly and precisely, in a linguistically correct manner, with reference to your exact complaints, in order that we may have a true conversation regarding both the literary accomplishments and shortcomings of the novel and the series.

Listening to this series gives the story line a depth and richness that is even better than the voices which I created in my own head as I read. Bravo! I look forward to the final book in the series, but I must get to work to finish my thesis before then - I admit to spending too many hours listening, and not enough writing during this story!

I usually like suspense, thrillers, anything that makes my heart pound. But I thought I would try something a little different - and I must say that this is the best possible book I could have chosen for my exploration. Gentle yet strong, lost, yet deeply sure in a million little ways, the main character touches me, and gives me hope for humanity. It is lovingly written, with great love for all the characters, and the reading makes you a part of the book. A marvelous read.

Dr. Preston makes you feel as if you are truly involved in the proceedings. It is frightening and real - a true to life page turner.

My language may seem "harsh" but it is impossible to review this without being revolted. This series is hate-filled, racist, vicious garbage which promotes religion-based discrimination and is filled with sanctimonious "holier than thou" claptrap of the worst and most virulent type. I only gave it one star because the system requires it. Pity there isn't the ability to give negative star ratings! Don't waste your time or your money. Your time is better spent volunteering in a soup kitchen and your money better spent giving to good causes if you feel the need to fulfill your spiritual self.
