Deadpool (2016)
Action packed, brilliant and hilarious
Deadpool is directed by first time director Tim Miller and stars Ryan Reynolds, Ed Skrein, Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic, and tells the story of a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary, who is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers. Therefore adopting the alter ego "Deadpool".
It's unbelievable to say, but Fox did it. They made the Deadpool movie I could only dream of. Everything was perfect to the last detail. From the opening credits all the way to the ending. I was surprised to see that they took extra effort in putting in all these small, but hilarious details. It really is a relief that I can say that Deadpool succeeded. I just had so much fun watching this film and the audience in my theater loved it too. Even the six year old in my theater loved it! He just kept on laughing and cheering. It was amazing!
Ryan Reynolds is amazing as Deadpool. The guy nailed it. From the jokes, all the way to the famous Deadpool characteristics. It was spot on. And the banter between him and Colossus was just perfect! I'm glad to hear that Reynolds is returning to play Deadpool in future installments. As far as I'm concerned, he wants to play Deadpool forever.
The directing by Tim Miller was phenomenal! Very impressive for a first time director. He inserted all the fourth wall breaks in brilliant ways. The action scenes were filmed stunningly and they were breath taking. I'm eager to see what he does next. Rather it be another Deadpool film or something complete different.
The biggest praise I can give this movie is that I wanted it to keep on going. I just didn't want it to stop! I actually felt sad when the credits started rolling. Well, I'm definitely going to see it again and my rating might go up a notch. Witch would make it a perfect 10/10.
Deadpool is a hilarious, action packed and most of all an entertaining film. You won't be disappointed. Also! Be on the lookout for a very hilarious end credits scene.
Exists (2014)
A dull, but somewhat entertaining film
Exists is directed by Eduardo Sánchez. The man who borough us the original found footage film "The Blair Witch Project", and tells the story of a group of friends who venture into the remote Texas woods for a weekend, but find themselves stalked by Bigfoot.
This is what I call, a fun party movie to watch with your friends. This movie is filled with clichés, terrible acting and a predictable plot. Despite all these complaints, I still had fun watching this film. I watched this with my dad and we just kept on making fun of it. Though it's nowhere near as horrible as Troll 2 or Birdemic, it's still pretty bad. The highest praise I can give this movie is it' Bigfoot design. I assume that the film's entire budget went to the Bigfoot costume. Because everything else is poor quality. I do have to say that I got scared twice during the film. But one was a cheap jump scare.
So if you're having a party later this week, than I suggest you put on Exists.
Everest (2015)
An unbelievable true story adapted to the big screen
Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormákur and stars Jason Clarke, John Hawkes, Josh Brolin and Jake Gyllenhaal, and tells the true story of the 1996 climbing expedition on the Mount Everest gone wrong, in which the mountaineers were devastated by a severe snow storm.
Now I find this movie to be extremely interesting. I'm always interested in movies based on true story and I'm always curious if the film is faithful to the facts. So I did my research and it's pretty accurate to some extent. The makers of the film clearly had to change some things up. Or else we'd just be looking at people climbing a mountain for two hours.
Most performances are pretty solid. Except for Jake Gyllenhaal. I think Gyllenhaal is a talented and great actor, but you can just tell that he didn't want to be in this film. At least, that's what it looked like to me. I could be totally wrong. But hey! that's me speculating for you.
The effects are great and there are a few jaw dropping moments that will keep you awake the entire way through.
My main problem with the film isn't necessary the acting or the script, but the film is just so forgettable. The next day I woke up, I forgot this film ever existed. I guess I'm nitpicking now, but for some reason, that effects my rating.
At the end, Everest is a film that everyone will enjoy. Hell, even my mother likes it and she is a nit picky person. So, if you haven't checked out Everest yet, than I strongly suggest you do.
Homeland: A False Glimmer (2015)
A disappointing final to a solid season
Homeland (2011-) - Season 5 - Episode 12 - A False Glimmer
This is quite possibly the most disappointing finale we've had yet. Which I thought could have never been possible. Since the final episode of season 4 was quite disappointing too.
Before I go any further with my review. Major spoilers ahead! So stop reading if you have not been catched up yet with the season.
So you'd think that the season would end with a bang. Right? Well, wrong. After all the suspense and drama that has been leading up this the terrorist attack, Carrie (Claire Danes) stops the terrorist attack right on time. And I'm not saying that I like to see hundreds of people or even thousands of people die, but it's a TV show for crying out loud. There was no suspense, it was predictable to say the least. Which is a shame, because I was at the edge of my seat for almost every other episode of the season.
The rest of the episode is pretty slow pace. Nothing really interesting happens until the last 10 minutes of the episode. Saul (Mandy Patinkin) catches and kills Allison (Miranda Otto). Which was a satisfying ending to a character you've grown to hate, and in the last 5 minutes, Quinn (Rupert Friend) potentially dies? OK. So here lies my biggest complaint. Rupert Friend was the most interesting and most fun character on the entire show. His character went through a lot in the four seasons he was in, and him dying because Carrie pulled out the plug, is plain stupid and lame. I seriously hope the writers of the show bring him back. Because he was the best part about the show.
You can tell I love this show very much and that's why I'm so furious with the ending! Anyway. Despite all my nagging and complaints, I still can't wait for season 6. I'm interested to see what the show brings us next.
127 Hours (2010)
An inspiring and emotional film you will never forget
127 Hours is directed by Danny Boyle and stars James Franco and tells the story of the real life mountain climber "Aron Ralston" who became trapped under a boulder while he was canyoneering alone. In order to survive, he had to resort to desperate measures.
I have to admit, I forgot this film existed. That's why it took me years to finally see this film. Now that I have, I'm glad to say that it didn't disappoint. I always like to tell as less possible about the plot of a film. I want moviegoers to go in fresh and not knowing what the expect. Although it's based on a true story,I'm not going to tell you how it ties everything up, because I didn't know either. If you want to know what exactly happened, than watch the film or look it up on Wikipedia.
The movie has only one main cast member as you would probably guess and that is James Franco as Aron Ralston. Franco gives an entertaining but also emotional and heartfelt performance. You root for him the entire way through, you are sad when he's sad, you are happy when he's happy. If only James Franco did more roles like this. He truly is a talented actor and it's a shame he keeps doing these dumb and unfunny comedies.
The cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle is gorgeous. I never thought that a dessert could look so beautiful. I do I have to say that the movie isn't for the faint of heart. There is a certain scene where I looked away out of shock and I was seriously grossed out by it. My biggest issue with the movie isn't really something major, but I just wasn't the biggest fan of all the flashbacks and the illusions. There is one silly illusion, which involves a dog, and I won't spoil it for you, but it's pretty dumb.
I really don't want to say anything else. Like I mentioned earlier, I want you to go in fresh and just enjoy the film.
The Martian (2015)
"The Martian" is Ridley Scott's triumphant return
The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jeff Daniels, and tells the story of an astronaut named Mark Watney, who during a manned mission to Mars, is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. Stranded and alone, Watney tries everything to get back home.
I am a big fan of Ridley Scott. I haven't seen all of his work, but all his films I've seen, I thought were quite good or amazing. Now I've seen The Martian, I can confidently say that he hasn't failed. After Prometheus and Exodus: Gods and Kings, people started questioning if he still had it in him to make a good or possibly great film. I can't argue with the moviegoers about his past failures. Although I liked Prometheus myself, I can confidently say that people won't be disappointed with The Martian. The story isn't the most complicated nor the most original, but it does it job in entertaining you for 2 and a half hours.
Let's talk about the performances. Matt Damon is extremely fun to watch and I can't deny that he is quite good in portraying his character. You can just feel his energy while watching him. You can tell he had a lot fun making this flick, which is something I love seeing. The supporting cast is pretty good, though I had some issues with one cast member in particular. That being Donald Glover. His character was supposed to be the comic relief of the film. He did succeed in making me chuckle a couple of times. The character just felt misplaced.
The highlight of the film is undeniably the effects and I assume that that was a big reason for people to come and see this film. Plus the people who've read the book was probably also a big factor. I don't really have any complaints with the effects what so ever. But I just felt like they could have used more practical effects. Which is something Ridley Scott does quite good. Blending computer effects with the practical.
The script is quite good, but the screenplay wasn't really that special to me. Maybe I will notice something different when I watch it a second time, and that leads into my biggest problem with the film. I don't really have the urge in seeing it again any time soon. I can't really tell why. The movie doesn't really has the same repeat value as Alien (1979) or even Prometheus (2012). But that is not going stop me from recommending this film. But this is nothing for you if you don't like space movies.
The Martian is Ridley Scott's triumphant return to cinema and I can't wait to see what he does next!
Trumbo (2015)
Bryan Cranston shines in "Trumbo"
Trumbo is directed by Jay Roach and stars Bryan Cranston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Diane Lane, Louis C.K. and Helen Mirren, and tells the story of the real life Dalton Trumbo, who was Hollywood's top screenwriter in 1947, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Trumbo is an essential film. At least, in my opinion it is. It does an amazing job in luring us in and telling a very intriguing real life story. Bryan Cranston is well deserving of his Oscar nominee and I kind of hope he wins it too. I seriously forgot I was watching an actor playing a character. I'd say, that's a job well done.
The supporting cast is pretty good as well. Although I had some issues with the performances of Louis C.K. and Michael Stuhlbarg. Some of Louis C.K. his lines felt forced and Stuhlbarg his performance felt similar to his performance in A Serious Man (2009). At least, to me it does. The music by Theodore Shapiro, fits the movie perfectly. It is catchy and well composed.
Trumbo is an essential film and I think it may become an important film in the near or distance future. Trumbo is definitely worth your time.
The End of the Tour (2015)
An outstanding and touching film, with excellent performances
The End of the Tour is directed by James Ponsoldt and stars Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel and tells the story of the five-day interview between the real life Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky (Eisenberg) and acclaimed novelist David Foster (Segel) Wallace in the mid 90s.
I remember the first time I took note of Jason Segel and that was in How I Met Your Mother. Although I don't find him funny as a comedic actor, I do find him quite remarkable to look out when he's portraying in more serious films. Jason Segel completely transformed himself as the real life author David Foster Wallace and gives undeniably one of the best performances of the year. It's a shame he didn't got nominated for his performance.Segel is kind of a second John Hawkes to me. John Hawkes gave an amazing performance as the real life Mark o' Brien, a man suffering from polio. In the movie "The Sessions". But got snubbed by the Oscars in 2013.
Jesse Eisenberg is pretty darn good as well, but he still has his Jesse Eisenberg characteristics. Although I did quite enjoyed his performance, I can't really find the words, what I thought was wrong or could have done better with his performance.
I have to say that, if you're not into talkie movies, then this is nothing for you. The film is filled with long and stretched out conversations between the two leads, that a normal moviegoer could easily get bored. But if you love movies with a heartfelt and touching story, then this is for you!
The End of the Tour is filled with great performances and quite possibly one of the best films of the 2015.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
A powerful message to the world, told through a sci-fi film
The Day the Earth Stood Still is directed by Robert Wise and stars Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe and Sam Jaffe, and tells the story of an alien who lands on our planet, to tell the people of Earth, that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets in the galaxy.
The Day the Earth Stood still, is in my own personal opinion, the greatest sci-fi film in existence. I was already hooked when the opening credits started playing. All thanks to the amazing score by Bernard Herrmann. It might not be as spectacular to look at, like 2001: Space Odyssey, but it tells a very powerful message and it's also a heartwarming film. Michael Rennie plays the alien who lands on earth to tell the message. What I like a lot about his character, is that he isn't your generic space creature. He has man of flesh and blood. He gives a great performance and he's so damn likable too. The character that steals every scene he's in, is the robot Gort. A very menacing and iconic character. What makes this character so great, is that he's almost like a slasher villain. He moves very slow and always catches his victim. The ending is very satisfying. I'd say that it ended in the best possible way imaginable.
The Day the Earth Stood Still is sci-fi classic that will stand the test of time.
The Lobster (2015)
An obscure film, set in an obscure dystopian world.
The Lobster is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and stars Colin Farrell, Ben Whishaw, Léa Seydoux and Rachel Weisz, and tells the story of a dystopian future, where single people are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or else they are transformed into an animal of choice and sent off into The Woods.
The Lobster is one of the 2015 releases I've been looking forward to quite a bit. Going into this movie, I really didn't know what to expect. You would think that seeing the trailer beforehand, it would give you more information about the film. In some ways, it did. But I was still blown away by the overall story of the movie. This is Yorgos Lanthimos' first English spoken film and I have to say, I'm seriously impressed. The majority of the performances are solid and the directing by Lanthimos is quite superb. But, I felt like the movie kept dragging on. The ending made me quite furious, since we don't exactly know how it ends. I guess I was that invested, that I should give the director and the writers credit, just for that soul reason.
The Lobster is quite possibly the strangest movie of 2015 and it has to be seen with your own eyes. Be on the lookout for more films directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
