The doctor was insulted by the police only because he treated those seriously injured; two workers who were shot with rubber bullet at Rokeya Sharani, Dhaka. The doctor said that he did this treatment only for humanitarian reasons. Nonetheless, police asked, ‘With whose permission did these women get treatment?”
The incident started from Seoraparaya Mirpur on Wednesday morning. When the Shanin Groups garments workers were protesting, the police threw grenades, sound grenades and shot rubber bullets at them. The garment workers in question who were injured with bullets are Shakina Begum (45) and her daughter Shirin (21).
Journalist Golam Mujtoba informed that they were seen with severe injury and bleeding from their legs. Right after the incident, they were taken to Exim Bank hospital in Kazipara. The Hospital staff informed that one rubber bullet was taken out from Shirin’s leg. Shakina’s leg was also severely injured. They were sent home right after the treatment.
After these injured two women left the hospital, the sub-inspector Kamal Hossain came to visit the hospital in white uniform. He was seen very angry and looking for the physician who did the treatment.
He got the mobile number of Dr. Alamgir Shikdar from the medical information center and the staff heard him call and say, “Why do you have to treat them? Who gave you permission to treat them? The police did not allow it. Permission is negotiated.”
Later on someone from the journalists group tried to contact the physician, and he informed that when the injured workers came to the hospital, they were seriously hurt. He just treated them for humanitarian reasons. He gave the same information to the police as well.
When Hossain was asked about this, he answered with angriness, “You journalists always enjoy making news of the Police, isn’t it? I just wanted to know why the doctor treated these wounded people without the permission from the police station, nothing else.” He also stated that he didn’t misbehave with anyone.
