Del Singh Foundation

The Del Singh Foundation is generously funding a new MSc scholarship at LSE. The Del Singh Foundation Scholarship will cover tuition fees and living costs to support one student in the next academic year (2016/17) on any post-graduate course at the School’s European Institute, with preference given to students from war zones/conflict affected areas.

The Foundation was created in January 2014 following the tragic death of LSE alumnus Del Singh (MSc 2000 European Studies) in Kabul, Afghanistan while working with the British Department of International Development. Del dedicated his life to fighting for human rights across the world and sought justice for those whose voices could not be heard. He channelled his passion into every project he was involved in - from his international development work to supporting local community projects at home.

Dishi Kaur Umfleet, Del’s sister and founder of the Del Singh Foundation, commented: “The Del Singh Foundation Scholarship is in tribute to my brother’s life – to honour Del’s accomplishments while perpetuating his vision of equality of opportunity for all.”

Kevin Featherstone, Head of the European Institute, commentedIt is a privilege for the European Institute to host a scholarship in the memory of one of our own alumni who clearly demonstrated the best human values of international understanding and cooperation.  It will provide opportunity to a young successor who would not otherwise have been able to study with us.  This is, indeed, a fitting tribute.

Professor Maurice Fraser

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the death on 12th February 2016 of Maurice Fraser, former Head of the European Institute.

The EI has received many, many warm personal messages of sympathy from his friends – from across British and European academic and public life – and these reflect Maurice’s character and stature.  Maurice’s family are inviting donations to the Brain Tumour Charity, in lieu of flowers and in his name: the link is www.justgiving.com/mauricefraser.

If you would like to share condolences or memories of Maurice Fraser you can do so here.

European Institute Events

LSE is one of Europe's most influential platforms for addressing issues, trends and policies affecting both the European Union and the wider Europe. The European Institute is proud to host events with distinguished speakers from the worlds of politics, business, media and culture. See our full programme of events here.

The EI also runs the Europe@LSE research seminar series, which intends to provide a forum for research on Europe - both on the European Union and beyond its borders, and in all disciplines. Papers are given by external speakers, by staff and by research students.

In addition to this the European Union in Practice: Politics and Practice in the Brussels System seminar series sees policy practitioners join us at the European Institute to talk about their role and experience of working with and within the EU institutions.

LSE Commission on the Future of Britain in Europe

The LSE Commission on the Future of Britain in Europe aims to inform the national debate on Britain’s membership of the European Union, with high quality, evidence-based and balanced analysis. The work of the Commission will concentrate on a series of expert hearings convened by LSE academics. Participants will include senior British and EU public officials, policy practitioners, academics, think tanks, journalists and business representatives.

The Convenors’ reports of their individual hearings will contribute to a final report setting out an overall assessment of the case for continued British EU membership or a Brexit. The LSE Brexit Vote Blog will distil important findings from each hearing.

ref

The LSE European Institute (EI) was ranked first in Area Studies in the latest national Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) exercise.

The EI was also ranked first in its sector in the previous national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008.

An impressive 55 per cent of the Institute’s research and impact was awarded the highest possible (4 star) grade in the REF2014, indicating that it was considered ‘world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour’. A further 30 per cent was deemed ‘internationally excellent’ (3 star).

The European Institute’s ‘Impact’ case studies were all judged to be 4 star: the highest ranking of any Area Studies submission in the country.

This demonstrates the success of the Institute in producing outstanding research that makes a real difference beyond academia, promoting and informing UK and European evidence-based public debate and policy development.
