Deadpool smashes the Us box-office taking $135 million in first weekend

2 hours ago | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Deadpool has quite literally destroyed the box-office in the north American territories over the weekend. The R-rated comic-book movie scored a huge $135 million in its opening weekend, which is about double what was predicted. The huge sum makes it the biggest ever R-rated opener, the biggest opening for a film in the Us in February, and Fox’s second biggest opening weekend ever (after Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith). A huge congrats to Ryan Reynolds and the team behind the film.

The big question is to how this changes things in Hollywood. Previously, films went through a huge, laborious process of getting chopped up to secure that PG-13 rating, whereas Deadpool went in the other direction – not worrying about the rating and even going after the harder certificate. The numbers do the talking, and there’s clearly a market out there for a slightly darker superhero movie. »

Deadpool: no director's cut on the cards

The DVD and Blu-ray of Deadpool may have deleted scenes, but director Tim Miller says there's no full director's cut coming.

Here's a rumour to scratch off the list: there's no extended, director's cut of Deadpool heading our way. There had been talk that there was a longer, more expletive-packed version of the film that might arrive on DVD and Blu-ray, yet director Tim Miller has ruled that out.

Talking to Collider, he said that "I don’t want to be all Joss Whedon on you, but no there’s not [a director’s cut on the way]".

He added that "there are some deleted scenes that have some extra stuff, but I’m pretty happy with this cut. I like it".

Miller also added that producer Simon Kinberg had "strongly suggested" he take one or two things out. "There’s some stuff on the DVD extras, I had a little more workshop fight »

Deadpool's opening weekend stuns, doubles expectations

Deadpool shatters box office records - and might just re-write the rulebook on R-rated comic book movies.

Well, blimey.

The conventional wisdom is that R-rated comic book movies limit the potential business for a movie, and thus studios have been insistent on PG-13 rated cuts. Furthermore, who would be interested in a Deadpool spin-off? A film that Fox wasn't set to make until, infamously, test footage leaked online, and quickly got a rapturous response.

Well, Deadpool - starring Ryan Reynolds, of course - finally opened in cinemas last week. It would be fair to say that its box office performance has taken many people by surprise.

Fox had a comic book movie hit for an older audience last year with Kingsman: The Secret Service, but even its own analysts are unlikely to have seen it's $135m three day opening weekend performance in the Us. That's at least double what had been predicted, »

Deadpool Turns Valentine’s Day Weekend Box Office Records Red and Black for Fox

5 hours ago | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Everyone at Twentieth Century Fox will probably show up at work on Tuesday following the President's Day holiday and find a chimichanga valentine on their desk. Or at least they should considering Deadpool defied practical logic and tore up numerous box office records en-route to a massive four-day holiday opening weekend haul.

With Ryan Reynolds as its star, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick delivering the vulgarity, Tim Miller calling the shots, and Fox's marketing department working their dream project where anything and everything was apparently fair game, Deadpool blew away the President's Day three-day box office record with a cool $135 million from Friday through Sunday. Tack on Monday's estimates and you're looking at a cool $150 million for the $58 million-budgeted Deadpool through roughly 100 hours of release.

Who said Valentine's Day was all about sappy chick flicks?

Warner's The Matrix Reloaded previously held the R-rated opening weekend record at $91.7 million and »

Here's Where You Know Deadpool's Gina Carano From

6 hours ago | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Sure, Deadpool is all about star Ryan Reynolds, but can we take a minute to appreciate the villain? No, I'm not talking about Game of Thrones star Ed Skrein as Ajax (aka Francis) - I'm talking about his hired hand, Angel Dust. Gina Carano plays the deadly sidekick, and if you left the theater wondering where you'd seen her before, we have answers. Carano is a trained Mma fighter, and she made her feature film debut in Steven Soderbergh's 2011 thriller Haywire. She's been kicking butt and taking names on the big screen ever since. Deadpool Won't Have A Director's Cut

7 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

There's a real good chance that you were one of the many folks who went out to see Deadpool this weekend, considering it's hauled in a record walloping $153 million in the past couple of days. So, of course, knowing how raunchy and action-packed the film was, you probably think there's a nice and juicy director's cut waiting for you in the home video phase of the film's release. Well we're sorry to say that no, there isn't.  Deadpool director Tim Miller was on hand for Collider's IMAX preview screening of the film, and during the Q&A there was talk about deleted material and a possible director's cut. Miller's response was that of a compromise, as while there are some deleted scenes that are coming to the DVD and Blu-ray, his final say on a director's cut went as follows: I don.t wanna be all Joss Whedon on you, »

Deadpool: Here's What You Need to Know About Those 2 Awesome Mutants

7 hours ago | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Deadpool is chock-full of references to other Marvel films. In fact, it's so self-aware that at one point, Deadpool tapes a picture of Hugh Jackman over his face. (So meta!) Not only does the movie refer to the X-Men several times, but it introduces one new mutant to the cinematic universe and brings back another: Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Colossus (voiced by Stefan Kapicic). They're not exactly Deadpool's sidekicks, but they are campaigning for him to join their team of superheroes. Here's what you need to know about their characters in the comic books, and read carefully, because there's a big chance they'll appear in the already-in-development Deadpool sequel. »

Deadpool slays all before it in huge Australian opening

8 hours ago | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds' wisecracking hero Deadpool opened on 262 screens and made $14.8 million over the weekend, in keeping with the superhero comedy's boffo opening in the United States.

Aided by a marketing campaign that managed to be arrestingly vulgar but not (quite) obnoxious, Deadpool beat its nearest competition by a country mile.

The closest runner-up was Zoolander 2, which opened on 272 screens and rang up $3.9 million in its first week off the back of scathing reviews.

Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan, was next best, ringing up $1.4 million, and makes an intriguing contrast to Transmission's other New York-set period romance, Carol..

That film was set to be directed by John Crowley (who directed Cate Blanchett onstage in The Present at the Sydney Theatre Company this year) before he left and Todd Haynes stepped in..

Crowley ended up directing Brooklyn instead, and the less-starry film has earnt about the same in a week as Carol made in two. »

7 Reasons Why 'Deadpool' Smashed All Expectations at the Box Office

10 hours ago | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

That "Deadpool" opened No. 1 at the box office this weekend isn't a shocker. Analysts expected it to debut with around $65 million. They were off by, you know, only about $70 million.

According to estimates, the snarky, sword-happy superhero actually brought in $135.0 million from Friday to Sunday -- with a likely $150 million haul by the end of the four-day President's Day weekend.

In addition to having the biggest opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie, and R-rated comic book movie (sorry, "300" and your puny $70.8 million), "Deadpool's" debut smashed all kinds of records. It's the biggest Februrary debut weekend ever (beating the $85.1 million earned a year ago by "Fifty Shades of Grey"). It's the biggest winter-season opening ever (ahead of last winter's "American Sniper," which went wide with $89.2 million in January 2015). And it's the biggest debut ever for 20th Century Fox (beating 2005's "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith, »

Deadpool Director Says He's A Fan Of Zack Snyder's Epic Take On Superheroes

10 hours ago | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

While the Merc With the Mouth is taking over the box office, director Tim Miller spoke to Omelet about his transition from visual effects to making his directorial debut with Deadpool and never giving up on his dream. "Never give up, because for me, at age 50, it seemed that my chance [to be a director] would not come over but appeared mainly because I stayed in the game and refused to give up. If you keep trying, things end up lining up," said the first time director. "The biggest challenge is to convince people that you know more than just visual effects If you do not have a resume to suggest that you can work with actors or a live-action team, it is difficult to convince people to give him that opportunity. Luckily, I've worked with many actors in motion capture and dubbing process, and in commercial art directors, so I already had some experience. »

How ‘Deadpool’ Returned Ryan Reynolds to the A-List and Saved R-Rated Comic Book Movies

13 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Deadpool’s” record-obliterating success is really a tale of two comebacks.

First there’s Ryan Reynolds. Going into this weekend, the genetically-blessed actor was on the ropes. Following “The Proposal” and “Buried,” Reynolds was anointed the Next Big Thing, but the twin failures of “Green Lantern” and “R.I.P.D.,” catapulted the actor off of the A-list, seemingly dooming him to a career of being Helen Mirren’s sympathetic ear in the likes of “Woman in Gold.”

But Reynolds found redemption in “Deadpool,” a physically deformed mercenary, whose jaundiced worldview makes him the rare costumed avenger who is as interested in slicing up the PC-police as he is in saving the world. It’s a role that plays off Reynold’s gift for comedy in a way that his bland leading men roles have failed to capitalize on, and it’s a movie that the actor willed into being.

'Deadpool' Shatters Box Office Records with $135 Million

14 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Predicting box office estimates is far from an exact science, as many films often come far above or far under expectations all the time. Weeks before 20th Century Fox's Deadpool hit theaters, early projections claimed the superhero adventure would take in between $55 million and $60 million on its opening weekend, and as we got closer to the release date, some predicted it could get as high as $80 million. As it turns out, they were all wrong, with Box Office Mojo reporting this critically-acclaimed R-rated adventure shattered both expectations and records alike, taking in a whopping $135 million, and it's expected to cross $150 million over the four-day President's Day holiday weekend.

Armed with a slew of positive reviews to the tune of an 84% "Fresh" Rotten Tomatoes rating, Deadpool shattered the record for highest grossing R-rated opening weekend of $91.7 million, held for 13 years by The Matrix Reloaded. Having set an opening day record on Friday, 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool has now shattered a host of records with its first weekend in the States, with the film pulling in a whopping $135 million over the Friday-to-Sunday period.

Deadpool has now claimed the three-day (and four-day) February opening weekend records from Fifty Shades of Grey, while it has also set a new record for the highest R-rated debut (previously set by The Matrix Reloaded with $91.8 million), and given Fox its biggest opening, surpassing the $108.4 million of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
