An interesting twist in the ongoing case of what’s happening with “Pacific Rim 2” revealed itself tonight. Former “Daredevil” showrunner Steven S. DeKnight is taking over directing duties on a project many believed to be dead. Read More: Guillermo Del Toro To Direct ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Remake, ‘Pacific Rim 2’ Dead For Now The announcement sheds some light, or at least points to, some of the behind the scene ongoings that director Guillermo del Toro was facing. “Pacific Rim 2” was originally set for a August 2017 release date, but Legendary and Universal pulled the plug on that date indefinitely and asked del Toro and his co-writer Travis Beacham to submit a new budget and script in the fall. Things were looking bleak as del Toro’s “Crimson Peak,” mostly flatlined at the box-office and the filmmaker was looking for a non-tentpole blockbuster for his next film instead. Evidently Uni and Legendary were still intent on making the film, »

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Hollywood sure loves to follow the trend of the moment and it appears Warner Bros. is following suit. It was unveiled on the Film Ratings website, per the MPAA (via StitchKingdom), that WB will be releasing an R-Rated version of “Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice” following in the wake of “Deadpool.” The 20th Century Fox mutant film starring Ryan Reynolds of course changed the game two weeks ago when it debuted with a $132 million opening — the highest opening R-Rated film of all time and by a considerable margin. Read More: Is 'Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice' In Trouble? Review: Idiosyncratic And Funny Indie Dramedy 'Life In Color'

Two depressed misfits with big dreams find some solace in a fleeting connection in Katharine Emmer’s affecting “Life in Color,” which she also wrote and starred in (among other duties, as per the indie filmmaking process). Emmer stars as Mary, a dour and depressed L.A. nanny, whose life is turned upside down when she shares a fateful toke with birthday clown Homer (Josh McDermitt) during one of her charges’ birthday parties. It’s quite the unconventional meet-cute, and doesn’t initially reveal itself as such until much later. Read More: The 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2016 Wracked with guilt over her pot-induced firing, Homer offers her a place to stay, an offer which Mary has to reluctantly take. She’s clearly struggling, with no family or friends to turn to, and the situation forces her into the uncomfortable position of having to crash with a stranger while she searches for a job. »

The 20 Worst Examples Of Hollywood Whitewashing

To a general rolling of eyes and shrugging of shoulders, Alex Proyas' "Gods of Egypt" beats its big silly golden CG wings into theaters this week. Aside from the fact that it looks… not very good, the film has stirred up what little interest it has mostly due to the casting of Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites and a host of other white actors as Egyptian deities and demigods. Among all of them, Chadwick Boseman's presence seems at best token and at worst heartbreaking, because he deserves a lot better than "Gods of Egypt." In any case, coupled with the #oscarssowhite snafu continuing to unfold, John Oliver recently picked up on the mutinous mood with to regards to Hollywood's practice of whitewashing. There are a few different degrees of Hollywood whitewash: the mildest, probably because it's the most invisible, involves the ethnicity of a character changing before filming has even begun, »

'A Bigger Splash' Soundtrack Features The Rolling Stones, Captain Beefheart, Harry Nilsson & St. Vincent

There are numerous reasons to put Luca Guadagnino’s “A Bigger Splash” on your must-see list this spring. It’s the latest film from the director of the beautiful “I Am Love,” it shot on location in sunny Italy, and the terrific cast is led by Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts. But if that’s not enough, perhaps the film's soundtrack will tip the scales. Read More: Venice Review: Lucas Guadagnino's 'A Bigger Splash' Starring Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes & Dakota Johnson The movie features some choice jams from the Rolling Stones, Captain Beefheart, Harry Nilsson and St. Vincent. The Stones cuts in particular are interesting, with Guadagnino opting for lesser known tracks like “Moon Is Up” from Voodoo Lounge and “Heaven” from Tattoo You. Meanwhile, St. Vincent covers the Stone’s underrated, disco-influenced “Emotional Rescue.” Check out the full tracklist below. The soundtrack is now avaiable overseas. »

Interview: John Hillcoat On The Challenges Of Building An Ensemble Cast And New Sonic Palette For Neo-Noir ‘Triple 9’

Triple 9” is the latest film from John Hillcoat, the Australian director perhaps best known for a string of films that approach familiar genres in new ways. “The Proposition” is an Australian western; “The Road” is a literary post-apocalyptic tale; and “Lawless” tackles the gangster genre. Like those films, “Triple 9” finds the director adding his own spin to a well known template— it's a cop movie with a modern noir twist. Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Clifton Collins, Jr., Teresa Palmer and Gal Gadot comprise an ensemble for a film tellling the tale of a group of crooked cops who embark on a dangerous bank heist on behalf of Russian gangsters. Ryan Reynolds Angles For Big Payday For 'Deadpool 2,' Will Star In 'Hitman's Bodyguard'

If there is one actor around which the current incarnation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe orbits, it's Robert Downey Jr. The actor anchored three "Iron Man" films, became the showcase star for the larger franchise, and used that to leverage some big paydays for his continued involvement. It's fairly clear that Ryan Reynolds could do the same for 20th Century Fox's 'X-Men' films. "Deadpool" has already performed better domestically than any other X-Men movie to date and presently has the global record currently held by "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" in its sights. So it's understandable if Reynolds seeks to maximize his own contribution to the franchise's latest triumph. Read More: Review: 'Deadpool' Starring Ryan Reynolds, T. J. Watch: 5-Minute Video Essay Details The Deleted Scenes, Rejected Characters & More From 'Deadpool'

Perhaps it's not a surprise that for a movie that spent years and years in development, nearly getting made but continually pushed back and reworked, there's a lot of knowledge out there about the "Deadpool" movie that could've been. Mark Strong Says Daniel Craig Won't Be Returning As Bond

Even before the release of "Spectre" last fall, there have been plenty of rumors that Daniel Craig was done as James Bond, often spurred by the actor's cranky press tour and open complaints about playing the role. And the talk that he might holster 007 buzzed even louder when Craig signed up to star in the limited series adaptation of Jonathan Franzen's "Purity," which is set to be directed by Todd Field, and would presumably eat up a significant chunk of his schedule. 'The Witch' Director Robert Eggers Conjures Rasputin TV Series

Last summer, six months after the buzz surrounding “The Witch” first got started at the Sundance Film Festival, director Robert Eggers lined up a remake of the horror classic “Nosferatu.” However, he has made it clear he wants to get a bit more experience under his belt before he makes that leap. “Well, it’s actually not what I’m doing next. I think it seems very disgusting and presumptuous and megalomaniacal and offensive for someone in my position to say they want to do 'Nosferatu' next, so I think that’s why it hit the trades in a big way. I still might do it, but not next,” he told Collider. “It’s a masterpiece and it really doesn’t objectively need to be done, but I’ve been obsessed with that film since I was a little kid.
