MISSION & OBJECTIVE
The Brooklyn Film Festival (BFF), is an international, competitive film festival. BFF's mission is to provide a public forum in Brooklyn in order to advance public interest in films and the independent production of films. We also seek to draw worldwide attention to Brooklyn as a center for cinema and to encourage all Brooklyn residents to access and experience the power of independent filmmaking. BFF, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The Brooklyn Film Festival (BFF) is a competitive festival for and by independent filmmakers. The organizers of BFF bring 19 years of festival experience to this annual event. BFF accepts submissions in six categories: Narrative Features, Documentary Features, Short Narrative, Short Documentary, Experimental, and Animation. Submissions are open from July to March, the final selection of 100+ films is announced in May, and the film festival takes place in June. Selected films in each category are eligible for several awards. Through the resources of our sponsors, BFF offers prizes totaling $50,000 in film services and products. Our industry sponsors include Panavision , Abel Cinetech, NYFA, Digital Bolex, Xeno Lights and many others. In addition to our lineup of films, the festival also hosts multiple filmmaker parties and networking events at venues around Brooklyn and New York City.
Many of the award-winning films from the Brooklyn Film Festival have gone on to have theatrical releases, to have nationwide broadcasts on PBS and HBO, and to be nominated and awarded at both the British and American Academy Awards.

DEADLINES

Deadlines are as follows:
Earlybird deadline: Postmarked by November 30, 2015
Regular deadline: Postmarked by February 15, 2016
Late deadline: Postmarked by February 29, 2016
WAB Extended deadline: Postmarked by March 7, 2016
Postmarked by = Submission packages can be mailed until the day of the deadline.
CATEGORIES
We accept submissions of Feature Narrative, Short Narrative, Feature Documentary, Short Documentary, Animation, and Experimental
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Language:
All films must be in English or with English subtitles.
Screening or Rental Fees:
BFF does NOT CONSIDER films that require SCREENING/RENTAL FEES.
Duration/Running Time:
Feature Narrative: No less than 60 minutes
Short Narrative: Less than 60 minutes
Feature Documentary: No Less than 50 minutes
Short Documentary: Less than 50 minutes
Animation and Experimental: no limitations
Prior Screenings:
Entries can not have a theatrical run (commercial release) or be broadcast (TV) anywhere in the U.S.A. before June 8, 2015. Previous screenings at other film festivals, as well as private, industry, and press screenings are OK. The "New York Premiere" status is preferred, but not mandatory.
Completion Date:
Projects submitted to the Festival must have been completed after June 1, 2014. Works-In-Progress are considered only during the final submission deadline and if the film will be completed by May 8, 2016.
Independent Production:
Films produced, financed, or initiated by a major motion picture studio are not eligible for the competition.
SUBMISSION PACKAGE CHECKLIST
- The Festival accepts DVD Submissions and Secure Online Screeners via Withoutabox.
- If submitting a DVD, we require a printed-out copy of the Withoutabox submission confirmation form and a DVD Preview Copy labeled with Title, Duration and Withoutabox Tracking Number
- Paid Entry Fee
To reduce the festival's carbon footprint, BFF does not accept Promotional Materials, Press Kits or Photos with submissions.
SUBMISSION PACKAGE REQUIREMENTS
Entry Form:
Each DVD submission package must include a copy of the completed Withoutabox entry form.
DVD Preview Copy Format:
Preview copy must be submitted on DVD or as a Secure Online Screener via Withoutabox. For DVD submissions, both PAL and NTSC systems are accepted. Region 1 (US & Canada) and region 0 (region free) DVDs are preferred but we accept all regions. DVD Preview copies will be retained by the festival.
Entry Fee:
Each submission must pay an entry fee via Withoutabox.

All payments must be in US Dollars, or be drawn on a bank in the USA. Checks and Money Orders must be made payable to Brooklyn Film Festival. Entry fees are not refundable.
BFF may waive the entry fee to directors who have had one of their films previously selected at the festival (Festival Alumni).
RULES FOR SELECTED FILMS
Filmmakers selected for the competition will be notified by May 8, 2016.
Additional Materials & Deadlines
IF your film is selected, you must provide the following:
By May 15, 2016
- Electronic Press kits & High Resolution Digital Photos
- Posters / Postcards and other available publicity material
- Additional preview copies (DVD) of the film.
By May 22, 2016
- The screening copy in the best available format accepted by the festival.
Shipping:
For all materials, shipping and handling costs to the festival office will be covered by the entrant. DVD Preview copies will be retained by the festival.
Publicity & Special Programs:
Selected projects may be promoted through all media types and outlets for promotional purposes. In addition, BFF reserves the right to re-screen the accepted projects at events and promotional showcases featuring festival's highlights.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
All films must be in English or with English subtitles.
Entries shall not open theatrically or be broadcast anywhere in the U.S. before the festival. The "New York Premiere" status is preferred, but not mandatory.
Projects submitted to the Festival must have been completed less than TWO YEARS prior to the festival. Works-in-progress are considered if completed at least one month prior the festival.
