There’s no denying that Pixar is the home to countless animated classics. From Toy Story to Finding Nemo and Wall-e, there’s no shortage of good, tear-jerking content to wade through. Many fans have lamented the fact that, in recent years, Pixar has resorted to making sequels to films no one asked for — Cars 2 and Monsters University are probably the biggest offenders there — all the while ignoring one film that simply begs for a sequel: The Incredibles.

Writer/director Brad Bird stepped into Pixar, made a couple solid flicks, and then jumped into live-action directing, putting out such movies as Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and Tomorrowland. It seemed like he’d potentially be on track to stick to live-action films for the rest of his career. But about a year ago, on the heels of Tomorrowland’s disappointing release, it was announced that »

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Gets Star Trek Composer Michael Giacchino

16 September 2016 9:33 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

When Star Wars: The Force Awakens was in pre-production, many wondered and worried if J.J. Abrams would replace the iconic John Williams with the director's own longtime collaborator Michael Giacchino as composer on this rebooted sci-fi adventure series. While that didn't happen, Michael Giacchino has found an opportunity to weasel his way into this hugely popular franchise. The man will now compose the soundtrack for this December's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

While some classic themes will be utilized to keep the movie in line with what has come before it, this first Star Wars spin-off will be 'whistling a new tune' as it were. While John Williams was never intended to return for these new standalone adventures, which will stand outside the Skywalker saga, Rogue One originally had Alexandre Desplat set in place to record the score. That all changed with the extensive reshoots that happened earlier this »

Mr. Church Review – Eddie Murphy And Bruce Beresford Are A Team You Wish Met Long Ago

16 September 2016 8:29 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

The movie industry has long since moved away from films that I think of as “somber yarns.” These are films that, while they likely have many happy moments, are generally sad and slow-moving, and aren’t exactly about anything. Last year’s Brooklyn is a good example, and I suspect that at least a small part of the reaction to that film is by way of its being, at this point, so out of the ordinary.

Mr. Church is such a film as well, and Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy, Evelyn) is a director who has just the right history to know how to meander through a young woman’s walk down memory lane.

Charlotte, who goes by Charlie (Britt RobertsonTomorrowland, Mother’s Day), narrates our way through a story that started when she was 10, in the early 70s. She woke up one day to find Mr. Church »

Michael Giacchino replaces Alexandre Desplat as composer on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

16 September 2016 1:29 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It looks like the extensive reshoots on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has led to scheduling conflicts for composer Alexandre Desplat, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that the Oscar-winner is no longer available to score the film.

Stepping in as Desplat’s replacement is another Academy Award-winner in Michael Giacchino, who has worked extensively with Disney in the past on the likes of Up, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Cars 2, Inside Out, Zootopia, John Carter, Tomorrowland and the upcoming Doctor Strange.

Giacchino will not have the distinction of becoming the first composer aside from John Williams to score a Star Wars movie. He is also a huge Star Wars fan, and made a cameo as a Stormtrooper in last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was directed by his friend J.J. Abrams.

With a movie like 'Tomorrowland,' it's a good thing 'Space Mountain' got scrapped for 'Star Wars'

14 September 2016 12:17 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It was four short years ago that Disney tightened their grip on our collective pop culture nostalgia. Having already secured Marvel Entertainment, the House of Mouse turned their all-seeing eye to Lucasfilm. On October 30, 2012 the acquisition announcement was made and the rest is now history. At the time fans were leery of the purchase, worried that Star Wars would become sanitized to bring in the all-mighty dollar of the preschool set. But while those fears have since been laid to rest with the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the merger wasn’t without its hiccups and casualties. One of them being an untitled sci-fi project by Max Landis, who was riding high off on the buzz Chronicle back in early 2012. First reported by Variety in January of 2012, the space adventure was axed as being “too similar” once they had Star Wars in their pocket. SlashFilm brought this tidbit »

Review: The Iron Giant

9 September 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

It used to be, movies surprised us when we took our seats. We didn’t have so many sources for news and trailers a decade or so back. On Tuesdays, Warner Bros screened new films after hours and one night, the DC Comics crew filed in to see an animated feature called The Iron Giant. We didn’t know much about it or Brad Bird, the man behind it.

We were utterly charmed. None of us knew Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man book it was based on but found the 1950s setting perfect, and the old style animation well-done. Best, it had heart and soul and humor and a robot who wants to be Superman. What’s not to love?

Warner moved the release date so late in the process that tie-ins missed the opening and the marketing wasn’t what it should have been. As a result, this modern day classic withered and vanished. »

Summer Box Office Wrap Up: 7 big lessons from a season full of disappointments

6 September 2016 3:20 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

There's been a bit of confusion in the media as of late about the performance of this year's crop of summer movies. Pieces abound about the so-called dismal state of the season, and yet when you look at it purely from a numbers perspective, 2016 actually ranks as the second-best summer ever in terms of domestic box office (2013 remains firmly in first place). So why all the doomsaying? First, let's take a look at a list of this summer's out-and-out "flops" -- a designation that can roughly be judged by measuring a film's budget-to-gross ratio. Historically, for a title to be deemed "profitable" it has to have made at least two times its production budget, and by that measure, the last four months have produced a total of six outright box office failures. They are: Star Trek Beyond Budget: $185 million Worldwide gross: $285 million Ghostbusters Budget: $144 million Worldwide gross: $219 million Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles »

Brad Bird Gives Brief Update On The Incredibles 2

Speaking to Entertanment Weekly, director Brad Bird was careful not to give away any spoilers regarding the plot of The Incedibles 2 but did reveal that he's made significant progress on the story.   “I don’t like unwrapping presents before Christmas,” said the Tomorrowland and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol director.  He continued, "It’s very actively moving, and we’re excited about it.  [We’re] trying to take it in some new directions.  Hopefully it’s the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction.  I mean, that’s the trick with a sequel. It’s repeating yourself, without repeating yourself." The Incredibles 2 is currently slated to arrive in theaters on June 21, 2019.  It will compete against the Justice League sequel (06/14/19) and Transformers 7 (06/28/19)  during the Summer box office season. »

A Dog’s Purpose Rings In National Dog Day With Refreshing First Trailer

You’ve heard the saying claiming cats have nine lives, but what about their docile companions? Introducing us to an uplifting story of canine reincarnation, the first trailer for A Dog’s Purpose has scurried online just in time for National Dog Day.

The pic, one lifted from W. Bruce Cameron’s best-seller, hails from director Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules). As the trailer above reveals, Josh Gad lends his vocal chords to the central canine, who experiences life through a variety of wildly different vignettes – and breeds – ranging from a cutesy pup to a trained German Shepherd. The story then becomes about Gad’s interaction with each new owner, a pitch that is about as crowd-pleasing as they come.

Imagine the premise of Todd Solondz’s indie pic Wiener-Dog, only spreading its heartfelt story across multiple eras, beginning with the 1940s. Outside of Gad’s multi-faceted role, »
