Shades of Black in Nature

Challenge #188 in the Life in the Natural World series. Hosted by RuthC.
Challenge is now open for submissions
Black is a very dramatic colour in nature's landscape. It is the darkest color, the result of the absence of or complete absorption of light, and the opposite of white (the combined spectrum of colour or light). It is an achromatic colour, literally a colour without colour or hue. (Wikipedia). The colour black relates to the hidden, the secretive and the unknown, and as a result it creates an air of mystery. This is a FULL COLOUR challenge, so definitely no black & white entries or desaturated pictures. Man-made structures should be minimal, no humans, domestic pets or birds deprived of their freedom. Macro and close-ups welcome. Size of entry: 1,600 pixels on its longer side.
