Terrence Malick continues his surge of productivity with ‘Song to Song’

10 hours ago | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Once upon a time, Terrence Malick was a filmmaker who took a legendarily long amount of time between projects. He has since shrunk his turnaround time significantly, becoming, at least by his standards, rather prolific. Sadly, that’s also led to diminishing returns, at least in this writer’s humble opinion. This week, Malick unleashes another film in Song to Song, one that’s spiritually similar to his last few flicks. It’s not the outright misfire that the last two were, but it’s nowhere near the quality that he was previously known for. It’s a shame, but this might be the new normal for him. Alas. The movie is a romantic drama set against the music scene in Austin, Texas. Plot and dialogue are essentially non-existent, but there’s a love triangle of sorts between musician Bv (Ryan Gosling), aspiring musician Faye (Rooney Mara), and producer Cook »

The Oscar-nominated actor, who starred as a talented jazz pianist in the acclaimed musical, is putting his nimble fingers to work in director Terrance Malick's latest romantic drama, Song to Song.

Billboard recently revealed a clip from Gosling's new project, in which the handsome star has traded in his piano for a Casio keyboard while performing a duet with Swedish indie-pop artist Lykke Li in her feature film debut.

The film -- which also stars Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Val Kilmer and Holly Hunter -- tells the story of two musician couples trying to navigate the Austin, Texas, music scene and their own tumultuous relationships.

'Song to Song' Review: Terrence Malick's Austin-Music Movie Is One Texas Turkey

15 March 2017 2:19 PM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

The music scene in Austin, Texas, is alive with talent and energy – and you hope that energy would inspire Terrence Malick, who lives there, to bust out of the filmmaking funk of his recent work (Knight of Cups, To the Wonder). No such luck. Despite a few glimpses of Iggy Pop, Flea, Lykke Li and Big Freedia in live performance, Song to Song has no music in its DNA, not to mention its soul. Instead, Malick indulges in his usual visual tropes, having characters wander around aimlessly while muttering their mock-profound thoughts in voiceover. »

Terrence Malick Explains His Unconventional Process in Rare SXSW Conversation

11 March 2017 9:04 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Terrence Malick spent 40 days filming his latest drama “Song to Song” throughout Austin, in his trademark style, without a completed script. The days were long — starting in the morning, with only a 30-minute break for lunch. The actors were even shot in the car, moving from one location to the next, just in case it turned into something.

“With new cameras, you can quickly accumulate a lot of footage,” Malick said at a rare public Q&A at SXSW on a rainy Saturday morning. “We had an eight-hour first cut. We thought, ‘Is this a mini-series?’ It really could have been. It took a long time to cut it down to a manageable length.”

Malick, who lives in Austin, started making the movie in 2012. But he finally unveiled the experimental drama as the opening night feature at this year’s SXSW Film Festival on Friday night. Although the reclusive director »

SXSW Review: ‘Song to Song’ is One of Terrence Malick’s Most Emotionally Dense Films

11 March 2017 9:00 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Let’s start this with an inquiry, one that hopefully engenders some consideration and an honest response: what are you seeking when watching a Terrence Malick film released in 2017? I take the unusual tack of beginning like so because it sometimes feels as if questions are the most that his recent work can ultimately encourage, and in particular because the latest, Song to Song — his fifth feature completed this decade, or the sixth if one counts the IMAX version of Voyage of Time, and preceding a sixth (or seventh) narrative film that’s rumored to premiere this fall — seems, no matter its very immediate and obvious pleasures, unlikely to change the current dialogue in any significant way. There are stronger-than-usual whiffs of narrative and a star-studded / -crossed-lovers cast to be found, yes — note how its poster puts those faces front and center while making no note of the auteur in »

Song To Song Review [SXSW 2017]

11 March 2017 7:45 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Song To Song couldn’t be more Terrence Malick’s brand, since most Malick “narratives” connect closer to musical composition than cinematic structure. Characters mimic instruments, so distinct and defined in their specific usage. Scenes play with a constant through-line, while solos let certain players shine in their own spotlights. Malick’s vision is lyrical, flowing with a composer’s ear more than a rigid eye for beginnings and ends. It seems fitting then to follow his latest characters through their own musical journey, as they navigate Austin’s artistic circles. More internal conflicts, more wandering cameras, and certainly more interactions where participants refuse to stand still. You know – signature Malick.

It beings with a love-triangle. Music producer Cook (Michael Fassbender) carries out a torrid relationship with “receptionist” Faye (Rooney Mara), then Bv (Ryan Gosling) befriends them both. Cook becomes Bv’s “brother,” the man who wants to make Gosling a star, »

SXSW Film Review: ‘Song to Song’

10 March 2017 11:21 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After making “Days of Heaven” in 1978, director Terrence Malick took a two-decade break from cinema, retreating to Austin, Texas, where his latest movie is set (bits of “The Tree of Life” also filmed there). During his absence, Malick was sorely missed: Here was a master filmmaker who had created one of the most visually stunning movies of all time, only to disappear, J.D. Salinger-esque, from the medium upon which he had so profoundly left his imprint. And then, practically out of the blue, Malick resurfaced with “The Thin Red Line,” after which, the man who’d been silent so long could scarcely shut up, unleashing a creative torrent that reaches its crescendo with “Song to Song.”

It pains me to say it, but Malick might want to consider another lengthy hiatus. Rushed into production mere months after his nearly-self-parodic, Hollywood-set “Knight of Cups,” “Song to Song” finds the maestro in broken-record mode, »

‘Song to Song’ Opens SXSW with Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender

10 March 2017 8:10 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Terrence Malick typically heads to Europe when he’s ready to unveil his tour-de-force dramas — his recent movies have debuted at film festivals in Venice, Cannes, and Berlin. But on Friday night, the reclusive director stayed close to home in Austin for SXSW’s opening night premiere of his romantic dramedy “Song to Song.”

The movie was shot in Austin, where the city shines as brightly as its cast. Ryan Gosling, who was met with shrieks as he snaked inside the Paramount Theatre, joined Rooney Mara and Michael Fassbender for a brief introduction on stage.

The film follows a music executive (Fassbender) who quarrels with his business partner (Gosling) as they both embark on a series of tortured romantic affairs.

Terrence Malick’s Song to Song gets two new clips, Christian Bale cut from film

10 March 2017 6:37 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In just a few hours, Terrence Malick’s latest directorial effort, Song to Song, will have its world premiere at the South by Southwest Festival; while festival attendees will get to see the film a week before general audiences, two clips have been released for the masses to enjoy. The first clip (via TrailerTown) centers around the partnership between Ryan Gosling’s Bv and Michael Fassbender’s Cook, while the latter clip (via One Big Soul) shows Bv romantically pursuing Rooney Mara’s Faye. Check out both below…

Neither clip is short on “Malick-isms,” between the voiceovers from several characters’ perspectives, floating camera and overall quiet and meditative tone. Song to Song certainly won’t be for everyone, as exactly zero of Malick’s movies are, but it looks like it should please his fans.

Not much tends to be known about Terrence Malick movies in advance, as the media-shy writer/director is famous for shooting in an improvisatory style and making significant changes throughout the editing process. (Just ask Adrien Brody.) “Song to Song” is a bit different, as much of the film was shot in the open at concerts in Austin and observers were able to get a sense of its narrative. With the movie set to premiere at South by Southwest in a few days, take a moment to review some of the videos of Malick filming that made their way to YouTube over the last several years.

Four Things DC Can Do If Ben Affleck Bolts From Dceu

19 February 2017 9:10 PM, PST | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

With all the hints we’ve seen lately about Ben Affleck having serious doubts regarding the Dceu projects he’s involved in, the powers-that-be at DC and the WB must be worried about losing their Batman. What will they do if Affleck abandons the bat cave? Here are four possibilities for continuing the Dceu post-Affleck.

Despite the praise he received for his appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ben Affleck’s participation in a solo Batman film (and any DC projects beyond that) is far from certain. Last December, he stated that his appearance in The Batman was “not a set thing”. More recently, he stepped out of the director’s chair for the Batman. Also, it seems that the script he co-wrote for the movie is a non-starter and it’s back to the drawing board for the screenplay. And let’s not forget the image »

See Wistful First Trailer for Terrence Malick's 'Song to Song'

Terrence Malick's Song to Song, an all-star drama that takes place against the backdrop of the Austin music scene, has revealed its first trailer ahead of its SXSW debut.

Soundtracked by Del Shannon's "Runaway," the trailer sets up the film's plot – although "plot" is a loose construct in Malick's recent films – as Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara portray a pair of indie rockers that fall in love in the Texas capital. Complicating matters is Michael Fassbender's smooth-talking music mogul and a waitress played by Natalie Portman, with »

Music, sex, rock ‘n roll….”Song To Song” (formerly titled “Weightless“) doesn’t sound like your average Terrence Malick movie, and perhaps that’s what makes this latest entry from the suddenly prolific director so intriguing (don’t forget, he’s already wrapped his next movie, the WWII pic “Radegund“).
